Today, 2/13, is my birthday...

and I'm posting because my younger brother went overseas in the nineties to teach English in South Korea. While there, he married a young native widow, adopted her daughter, conceived a son and planned to have the whole family moved back to the States by 2002.

Then Bush took office, and my brother decided it was best to stay in South Korea. My nephew, who was born on my birthday, is now ten years old.

I know how self-indulgent it is to post this, but I think it underscores how important our movement really is. I'm halfway around the world from family members who are important to me, because America must not be what our founding fathers intended if my brother, who obviously is native to the States, would rather live in and raise his family in South Korea.

And to your nephew as well. It is my oldest son's 27th birthday today :~)

While I am sure you miss your family members...I can't say I blame them. If I had to make the decision to have children today, I would likely choose not to have any. At least not while living in the US.

I can see HUGE differences in my own children who are 10 yrs apart, despite being raised by the same parents and within the same value system in our home. The "system" has too much influence and control over our children in this country.

I find myself having no regrets I didn't have any children. I think I'd be so scared for them!

I find it somewhat ridiculous to wish "Happy Birthday" to the wakeful. We shall have a happy liberation day, one day, though!
