GOP Split! Tea Party to Field Own Candidate Against Harry Reid in Nevada

By: Jane Hamsher Monday February 15, 2010

The Tea Party is evidently cutting its ties with the GOP in Nevada and pitching its own political tent. Certainly the best news Harry Reid has had all year:

Sun columnist Jon Ralston is reporting that the Tea Party has qualified as a third party in Nevada and will have a candidate in the Senate race to battle for the seat held by Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The party has filed a Certificate of Existence but needs to get 1 percent of the electorate to vote for its candidate in November to permanently qualify, according to the report.

Ralston reported that Jon Ashjian will be the Tea Party’s U.S. Senate candidate on the November ballot. Ashjian still must declare his candidacy.

Reid might actually have a chance if a Tea Party candidate can split the vote on the right, where Reid is currently down 10 points to most of his Republican opponents.

But why would the Tea Party split from the GOP, right after their happy Nashville convention headlined by Sarah Palin? Well, who knows. It’s probably been in the works for a while. But last week, after libertarian gubernatorial candidate Deborah Medina polled only 4 points behind Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Glenn Beck torpedoed her as a 9/11 Truther just as he did Van Jones, cheered on by Hot Air and the Washington Independent.

It’s clear that the Sarah Palin social conservatives and the Neocons are somewhat less than interested in handing the GOP over to the Ron Paul libertarians, and “populist hero” Glenn Beck did their dirty work. I guess the Tea Party folks are welcome to wave anti-Obama signs for the Fox cameras, but if they actually want to challenge any of the party brahmins — well, hands off.

I must be the only one

who sees this race as a no brainer. We have ONE choice here in NV.

Click below and just read the 1st sentence. It's that simple. JEEZ!

Of course Ed Morrissey from Hot Air did this....

Hot air's role seems to be to promote what the establishment GOP wants promoted. Funny, they used to go after Beck all the time, now they cheer him. Interesting that the author Ed Morrissey met with Perry.
"In just a couple weeks, Rick is holding an event called the “Perry Blogger Summit 2010.” Take a look at the list of featured participants: Andrew Breitbart…Ed Morrissey…Matt Lewis…Patrick Ruffini. These are all nationally known conservative bloggers."

The "worst" thing I can find about I can find about Jon Ashjian

is that he is loosely affiliated with "911 Truthers."
That alone makes me want to support him.

I can Assure all readers

This is either a group of opportunists or Reid's machine looking to hijack. The founders have zero 'teaparty' cred. We know none of them. The whole thing is suspicious here n Vegas. The tea party is not running a candidate against reps and dems. The title should be changed immediately.J in Vegas

Lot's of quotes come to mind...

Been saying that forever ---

"But why would the Tea Party split from the GOP, right after their happy Nashville convention headlined by Sarah Palin? Well, who knows."

Been saying that ever since Palin was trying to infiltrate the movement. (check my history).

Since the 2 main parties are EXTREMELY unpopular, the RepubliCrats are covering their asses by starting a so-called "3rd Party" since a 3rd party will be the way to go the next time around. With Palin they are just paving the way for themselves.

A Palin 3rd-Party-Tea-Party is just Neo-cons/Republicrats under a new name.

Wake. Up. Folks.

Obama = O.ne B.ig A.ss M.istake A.merica

Don't let "Them" confuse you....

The teaparty is not the Teaparty is not Teaparty Express is not the Teaparty Party.

Words matter. Those are 4 different things.

Who is Tea Party Express, you ask? Well, Tea Party EXPRESS is 100% RNC controlled through a group of RNC political consultants in Sacramento.

The Tea Party Express is coming to Vegas. The Tea PArty Party has incorporated in Nevada. The tea party activists ausscyn is referring to below are not Tea PArty Express or the Tea PArty party.

The distinction is important. Why?

Because the teapartiers she referrs to are like you and me.

The Tea PArty Expressers are not. OUR teapartiers did not go over to the Tea PArty party in Nevada, as ausscyn points out.

The mainstream media and RNC would like you to believe otherwise. Don't.

I have to add, too....

the TP in Nevada HAS been supported by republicans. That's the GOP in my book. Who do you think most of those people out in front of the capitol were on April 15th? They were republicans! A great majority of republicans know the score; the party is just run by a bunch of neo-cons who do not want to give up their FAILED agenda. Our battle is to still TAKE-OVER the party & get our team in leadership positions. That is the only way we can win. Hanging with the TP & supporting their functions is fine, as long as it's combined with taking over the republican party. All you have to do is see how successful third party efforts have been in elections to quickly realize third party is not the way to win office.

Won't it be great when the tea party candidate wins?

I don't mean to be rude, but are you kidding? I will bet you all the chips in Vegas that any TP candidate for US Senate in Nevada will be lucky to get a couple thousand votes. How will you feel if Harry Reid defeats Sharron Angle by a couple thousand votes? That could happen. The TP needs to stay OUT of this race. Anyone who doesn't see that is blind. SHEESH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Won't it be great when the Tea Party candidate wins?

Even a second place finish ahead of the GOP of Democrats would be a victory.

The headline should read GOP splits from tea party...

Since the right did not support anything tea party until the bailouts and socialized medicine became the topic of the day, partisans are in blind mode and are leaving the tea party candidates so they can be used and abused one more time before the collapse.

Always remember:
"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." ~ Samuel Adams
If they hate us for our freedom, they must LOVE us now....

Stay IRATE, remain TIRELESS, an

just a thought

I do not live in Nevada so I do not know about the R. candidates but from reading the comments it seems that one or more might deserve our support. Now if this is true then I think this is a 2 for 1 for tptb 1 distract liberty minded voters from the R. primary and 2 create a "spoiler" straw-man to derail the tea-party movement when the most hated man in the senate (barring McPain) is re-elected. usually I believe in 3rd parties but we need to be on the look out for manipulations of this sort. remember always ANYTHING regardless of its inherent truth or value can be manipulated.

Ah but R will vote T to beat D, if it comes to that.

Free includes debt-free!

Hey Nevadans,

poll in on this!

Bill Parson is a good man...

but to pick US Senate as your first run for office is almost suicide. Granted, I have only been active in the Nevada republican party for the past 3 years, but I've attended several large state-wide functions, as well as political training conducted by the Nevada Republican Assembly. I have not noticed any presence by Bill Parson at any of them. The first time I heard him speak was at the State Central Committee meeting in Hawthorne a few months ago. Sharron Angle has held state office. She has been active in the party for a LONG time. She has gone door-to-door, trained precinct captains, ran ambitious petition drives that were fought vigorously. I can go on & on about this woman. She doesn't just talk the talk - she WALKS! If we want to elect candidates to represent us who will win, we have to pick the ones who have some credability with the party & name recognition with the voters. If there's no one with these assets, then go ahead & run an unknown. But, in Nevada, we DO have a candidate with those assets & we'd be fools not to support her. Coincidentally, I don't recall seeing Bill Parson at any Ron Paul function in NV during the presidential race. Where was he then? Just wondering.....Please correct me if I was blind.

Bill Parson

Talking with some former RP MeetUp members, it's Bill Parson most 2007 R3VOLution Tea Partiers want. This is from his website:

- Restore literal interpretations of the Constitution and the controls it places on the Federal Government. Those powers not specifically cited to the Federal government reside in the States and with the individual citizen;

- Restore State Sovereignty as provided for in the Constitution and Bill of Rights;

- Impose stringent reviews on judicial appointments to ensure that they will not legislate from the bench and modify the Constitution by personal fiat;

- Take required action to call for and execute the removal of Federal judges who fail to honor their oath to the Constitution;

- Dramatically reduce the size of the Federal Government;

- Slash the Federal Budget in conjunction with restoration of States Rights

- Remove all unfunded federal mandates affecting the States;

- Implement the Fair Tax, repeal the 16th Amendment, and abolish the IRS;

- Remove the Federal Government from Education;

- Defeat or repeal any treaty or legislation that contains the potential to subordinate the U.S. Constitution, our laws, or our trade and security interests to foreign powers;

- All Western lands held by the Federal government and not immediately required for national defense, or reserved by treaty for Native American Tribes, are to be surrendered to the individual States at no cost;

- Over turn the Socialist “Reform Agendas” that have been legislated in 2009 and 2010.

Obama = O.ne B.ig A.ss M.istake A.merica

Sprout's picture

The Republicans need to lose.

If we replace Democrats with RINO's, then we've accomplished nothing. The Republicans need to lose over and over again until they get the message that the people will not support them just because they supposedly are the lesser of two evils.
A vote for the Republican is a wasted vote.
A vote for Parsons lets the people get used to something different - that others accept a non-R or D candidate.

Clearly the best, but....

...polling at zero.

Which is why

we have to throw our DP weight behind him. :)

I'd rather see Sue Lowden lose AND Harry Reid lose than break my head against a brick wall. Thanks.

While the RNC will attempt to paint it otherwise....

.... (as well as the mainstream media), there are few to zero ronpaulrepublicans who have gone over to the NV TeaParty party. I know there will be a few who will claim they were "staunch Ron Paul supporters", of those who claim it, there might be 1 or 2 who were.

This is all a sham. The Ron Paul Republicans in NV have stuck with the Republican party and have NOT gone to the TeaParty.

Watch the media spin come now, though, in an attempt to split us all up over the (non-)issue.

a GIANT WTF??????

Do any of you on here live in Nevada? If you do, have you been active in the republican party for at least the past three years? If you can't answer "yes" to these two questions, then you don't know dink about the U.S. Senate race here. Sharron Angle has not been mentioned once in any of these posts or the lead article. If you throw out her interventionist leanings, then she vets very cleanly for our side. If you stack up her credentials, ethics, endorsements & wins in state straw polls, she's winning by a mile. This tea party involvement in this race is NOTHING BUT an attempt to give Reid the race. I am TOTALLY pissed that this is happening & believe it to be nothing but subterfuge. Sharron Angle was the ONLY US Sentate candidate in the field who spoke at the LARGEST political gathering EVER at the capitol in Carson City last April. A TP event. The other candidates sat on their hands. Sue Lowden conducted a State Central Committee mtg that day, only two blocks away, & she didn't even mention the thousands of people in the streets who should bee wooed by the republican party. She was LITERALLY - OUT TO LUNCH! The TP people should be doing their best to elect Sharron Angle. I can't believe how the TP movement is turning into such a farce. Sarah Palin - PUHLEEZE - she represents the TP about as much as Rosie O'Donnell represents high fashion. We have GOT to put down these forces who are trying to manipulate the TP. They are going to destroy this wonderful movement & take down the little bit of respect & clout the TP has garnered through its efforts. If the TP's goal is to throw elections to the democrats (and they know they are with this kind of crap), then I want nothing to do with it.

Well, Cynthia, post Sharron's website or email

I'll contact Sharron and, if she's what you say she is, I'll offer to make her a campaign video. I've been requesting NV Paulistas to field a candidate, ANY candidate, to run against Reid, FOR MONTHS; this is the first time I've heard about Sharron Angle.

"If you throw out her interventionist leanings..

and the fact she likes to pull the whiskers off kittens and smack her handicapped grandmother around, she's great!"

Ron Paul "Sign Wave Across the USA" -- November 5th!

Dig In...

AND do not give up the fight for freedom!!! Look to the urchins who betrayed you leading up to the convention in 2008. You will find them destroying what they can not control anymore. The agendas are the same on both sides of the aisle, more socialism and slavery for all. They may even be between the sheets within your bedroom. It is an educational battle taken to the setting up of the elections
with tried in the fire true Constitutional candidates infiltrating the Republican Party. Third parties are out of the question. Dr. Ron Paul has said it many times that the States laws are very restrictive toward any third parties. Get elected to the County committee, and go to their meetings to gain control of the machine. Run for local offices of town councils,etc. It is much too late for third parties. I have been the route of third parties.
Only the various communist parties have been successful by gradualism over the past one hundred years. We do not have that much time to wait. Again, I say hang loose and
DIG IN!!! GOD will give the victory to the remnant who stay the course. Look how long it took Dr. Ron Ernest Paul to gain the front and center against all odds. TRUTH WILL OUT !!! Go forward like you and God are one as a majority...enough said...William Henry Harris...-whzh-

He who sells what isn't his'n, buys it back, or goes to prison!!!...-whzh-

I agree Sharron is the way to go

She has distanced herself from the powers that be in Nevada,"If you know what I mean"

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

You know it's an RNC scam.

Tarkanian is an

Audit the FED guy. He's not perfect but WAAAAY better than Ried and I can't vote for Lowden(obvious). Tark also pays for ads on this site. He's NV's best choice at this point. We really can't afford a TP guy split the vote here. Tark's support of S604 while Reid and Lowden don't is enough for me to vote for him here.

If I were there...

I'd join you.

"Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the office of a thoroughly nasty business concern." ~~C.S. Lewis
Love won! Deliverance from Tyranny is on the way! Col. 2:13-15

So there you have it.

There IS a GOP candidate worth supporting in NV.

Therefore, the TP is being used as a tool to divide us. 'Nuf said.
