The Dalai Lama is in Washington DC ahead of a meeting with U.S. president Barack Obama. China has already warned the talks will affect relations with America. Recently tension's escalated between the two countries following trade rows and a fallout over proposed U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. For more insight on the issue, RT talks to author and financial commentator Jim Rogers.

Barack Obama meets Dalai Lama at White House
President Barack Obama has met the Dalai Lama at the White House, brushing aside China's warning that talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader could further damage strained relations between the two powers.

Mr Obama used his first meeting with the Dalai Lama to press Beijing to preserve Tibet's identity and protect its population's human rights.

The meeting took place amid wider tensions over US weapons sales to Taiwan, Beijing's currency policies and Chinese internet security.

"The president commended the Dalai Lama's ... commitment to non-violence and his pursuit of dialogue with the Chinese government," the White House said in a written statement after the nearly hour-long meeting.

Mr Obama encouraged China and the Dalai Lama's envoys to keep up efforts to resolve their differences through negotiations, though eight years of talks have yielded little progress.

The 74-year-old spiritual leader is reviled by Beijing as a dangerous separatist but admired by millions around the world for his commitment to non-violent protest.

The White House also said Mr Obama and the Dalai Lama also "agreed on the importance of a positive and co-operative relationship between the United States and China", a reminder of the fact that in deference to the Chinese Mr Obama passed up an earlier opportunity to greet the Buddhist monk.

I don't know what odious reason besides

a photo-op Obama has for meeting with the Dalai Lama; "...to press Beijing to preserve Tibet's identity and protect its population's human rights." What the hell does Obama know about protecting human rights?!

He commended the D.L's "commitment to non-violence..." What does Obama know about non-violence?!!

This is disgusting play-acting. Can anyone take it seriously?

What would you do????

If you owed somebody a lot of money and couldn't pay????? The most logical thing to do would be to make friends with their enemies real quick, fast and in a hurry....

Hmmm

At the end, Rogers says, "The US is the largest debtor nation in the history of the world- debtors don't have too many options."

I'm always trying to figure out what kind of country this will be in ten years; these days, I don't think there's any way to know.

Rogers says that debtors

Rogers says that debtors don't have too many options. I'm thinking of the economic options being exercised by the current political leaders of the USA, most of which involve propaganda, including "Pretend and Extend", "Cook the Books", "Smoke and Mirrors", and "Management of Perception". Their only pro-active option has been "Kick Your Bankers in the Balls", which is a metaphorical reference to their treatment of China (weapons sales to Taiwan and high level meetings with the Dalai Lama) and Japan (stop driving Toyotas). This most recent economic strategy of "Kick Your Bankers in the Balls" reflects profound stupidity on their part.

Its a head scratcher.

I teach university students in China and I can tell you that Obama has been really popular here through his first year. But recent moves by Washington are definitely going to put a dent in his image.

Agree or disagree, most Chinese can get quite emotional when Tibet comes up. Many have made remarks that tend to suggest something along the lines of the Dali Lama is not much more than the product of a conspiracy of western powers.

How big of a deal is recent US moves? We'll have to wait and see.
