AUSTIN, Texas --
A software engineer furious with the Internal Revenue Service launched a suicide attack on the agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees, setting off a raging fire that sent workers running for their lives.

At least one person in the building was missing.

The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as Joseph A. Stack, 53. Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still going on, said that before taking off, Stack apparently set fire to his house and posted a long anti-government screed on the Web. It was dated Thursday and signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)."

In it, the author cited run-ins he had with the IRS and ranted about the tax agency, government bailouts and corporate America's "thugs and plunderers."

"I have had all I can stand," he wrote, adding: "I choose not to keep looking over my shoulder at 'big brother' while he strips my carcass."

The pilot took off in a four-seat, single engineer Piper PA-28 from an airport in Georgetown, about 30 miles from Austin, without filing a flight plan. He flew low over the Austin skyline before plowing into the side of the hulking, seven-story, black-glass building just before 10 a.m. with a thunderous explosion that instantly stirred memories of Sept. 11.

Flames shot from the building, windows exploded, a huge pillar of black smoke rose over the city, and terrified workers rushed to get out.

The Pentagon scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from Houston to patrol the skies over the burning building before it became clear that it was the act of a lone pilot, and President Barack Obama was briefed.

"It felt like a bomb blew off," said Peggy Walker, an IRS revenue officer who was sitting at her desk. "The ceiling caved in and windows blew in. We got up and ran."

...So now we have the first American "suicide bomber"...

..."Terrorist"...
...Wow...Life really is stranger than fiction...
...No flight plan was filed according to the msm...he just got in his plane and took off with nobody noticing...
...I wonder, if that were possible, what else could have taken off without anybody noticing...
...I can't help but wonder if his body was recovered and identified after the crash...?
...But, I'm sure the investigation is in capable hands...look how fast they made his "anti-government" suicide internet message available to us all...
...Kinda like on 9/11 when shortly after we were told it was Osama Bin Laden...even though we were also told later that our Intelligence agencies "did not have the imagination" to anticipate such an event...
...Yep...these guys are Gooood...

The unfortunate thing with this is

We have legitimate reasons to be concerned that the government will cause some grief. They will be watching pilots and may now do some labeling of anti tax people.
But this is the thing that they do wrong,They take one isolated incident and use it to pass a bunch of really unnecessary regulations. The government is at fault for this mind set.I remember when one idiot tried to vacuum up some water at a shop and of course electrocuted himself,so OSHA passed a law that now all extension cords must have built in circuit breakers.
They immediately made everyone stupid because of one isolated idiotic event, this is a problem that needs to be fixed,We all should not have to pay for one persons mistakes.

He had to know...

...that all this would do is cause the govt to tighten its screws even further. Now anyone who is anti IRs will be labelled a domestic terrorist.

Thanks Joe Stack.

Thanks for feedback Paul!

This has been my perfect blog....out of hundreds of attempts.

I was in the right place to jump on this with both feet and everything I searched for was quickly found.

One pilot's opinion...

As a general aviation pilot and lover of liberty I cannot begin to express how enraged I am upon learning this news.

After 911 general aviation still enjoyed a relatively low level of scrutiny with a fair amount of freedom intact. And I knew it was only a matter of time when some jerk (I'm being way too kind) would come along and ruin it for the rest of us, giving government an excuse to take more freedoms away.

I'm very angry at the selfish behavior of this guy and how he would lay this bad rap on his fellow aviators. First, he took innocent lives along with his own. Next, he couldn't foresee the irony of his actions - that his protest to government intrusiveness will result in even more government intrusiveness upon those he's leaving.

Aviation has been a lifelong passion of mine and only another pilot will truly understand when I tell you I never feel more liberated then the times when I'm flying. The day my private flying experience equals the commercial flying experience - that is the day flying seizes to be fun for me and I will likely quit.

So what? Boo-frig'n-hoo you might by thinking. However, many don't realize how much general aviation airports play a critical role in their local community services and economy. Examples include: fire, medical, jobs, training and commerce. When the gov. steps in and ousts people like me and discourages new pilots, then those airports eventually shutdown along with their benefits. And once they're gone that's it - they ain't ever coming back. Urban sprawl will take over. At that point the only likely scenario to become a pilot will be to join the military, then hope you live long enough to compete in the limited civilian market for a career. Because after all recreational aviation will be obsolete.

This is why I'm mad.

Unless Ron Paul! -Lorax

It is a valid concern,

It is a valid concern, however, the government is trying to take away the rights for one reason or another. There is no guarantee if this didn't happen you will be unaffected.

Focus on auditing the Fed ... everything else is a distraction.

Joe Stack WANTS a government crackdown

I agree with you completely --his selfish act hurts all of us. I hope it doesn't hurt general aviation, but it very well may. I have dreams of learning to fly a plane myself someday. Unfortunately, this man committed this horrendous act for the express PURPOSE of provoking a government reaction.

He states in his rant:
"I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are...violence not only is the answer, it is the ONLY answer."

that's a good point I hadn't thought of;

thanks for making it.

Hmmm...

All of these media reports that refer to the suicide note as a "rambling diatribe". I read the entire thing, and it did not seem particularly "rambling", especially given how upset he was. Rather, it seemed to be a more articulately written message than most people are capable of writing.

Gerald Celente was right

Gerald Celente was right again.

1. Tax revolts.
2. Violent resistance.

Oh, an IRS building. I thought it was a terrorist attack.

I was worried, but seems the terrorists were the ones attacked this time by an American.

Ho hum.. back to more important news.

Letter released immediately...

What's odd is that his letter was released immediately.

Usually authorities keep that sort of info. under lock & key while they dissect it & comb the perps hard-drive. Even regular people who commit suicide don't have their notes released that fast if at all. Yet, his was released just a couple hours after incident. Weird.

One of the earlier reports

One of the earlier reports confirmed that ownership of the site where it was posted tracked back to Stack.

The statement was uploaded to the front page of a web site that was registered in 2003 by a Joe Stack, who listed an address in San Marcos, Texas, which is about 35 miles south of Austin. The online posting is titled "Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man... take my pound of flesh and sleep well."

"Socialism needs two legs on which to stand; a right and a left. While appearing to be in complete opposition to one another, they both march in the same direction." - Paul Proctor

BEFORE WE START SLAMMING EACH OTHER HERE...

Bear in mind the similarities between this event in Austin and the 9/11 attacks (let's assume for a moment that it really was only 19 angry Arabs who did it on thier own).

We have every right to ask the underlying cause of the event as with 9/11 as Dr. Paul advocated.

Dr. Paul was SLAMMED by Giuliani and the rest of the republicans for EVEN QUESTIONING WHY these people would attack us.

I don't like violence either but the lesson here is to understand why he did it.

And then to ask if he DID have legitimate complaints.

And if so, then to ask what can we DO ABOUT IT?

The Constitution must be amended to abolish the federal income tax which by the way only people earning their money legally have to pay.

Even a national sales tax would be a more fair option.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

I agree that a national sales tax would be more fair...

even if it was applied to some essentials such as new clothing.
(now food, on the other hand, I would not like to see a salestax on.)
I also think the questions you pose are very wise, regardless, and that we will gain more by peaceful, civil disobedience than any other route.

But that man should play the tyrant over God, and find Him a better man than himself, is astonishing drama indeed!~~D. Sayers

I wonder if,

The whole building will explode, collapsing into a cloud of dust.

No...

That only happens when there's "magic" jet-fuel involved.

Wow who would have thought...

That given the fact that the main issue in our gubernatorial election is planes flying into buildings...and a plane would be flown into a building in Austin.

What do we live in a comic book?

Funny

As I said before, it's just strange the fire didn't bring the whole building down this time.

If he thought it would get him relected

Rick Perry would probably wire it for demolition himself.

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow

Yep,and we could probably

Yep,
and we could probably see what really happens when an airplane crashes into a building.
(nose out video south tower http://911review.org/Wget/investigate911.batcave.net/nose.html )
It will not cut through the steel like butter, but more likely crash on the impact.

Nor will it leave no wake

Nor will it leave no wake vortices in the fireball or smoke, nor will it look different colors in different camera shots, nor will it fly hundreds of miles faster than is physically possible for a Boeing at sea-level, blah blah, physics, reason, blah.

No planes were used on 9/11.. but even people who think they know the truth have no idea. It was a media job.

Plane Crash and Taxes

The Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution allows Congress to lay taxes on income derived from any source. The only way to change that situation is to pass a amendment into law that repeals the Sixteenth Amendment. Crashing planes into buildings does not get that job done, only political action will.

This guy looks like he went postal on the IRS.

He must have lost everything.

It is a miracle that only one person in the building is still missing.

I agree that crashing planes into buildings is no solution at

all.

However, you are incorrect that the 16th amendment allows Congress to lay such a tax.

Congress had the power long before the 16th amendment.

The Supreme Court has stated as much.

The purpose for the 16th was to clarify that taxes on incomes are not direct taxes, but are in fact indirect taxes in the form of excises.

Excises are taxes on a privilege.

The privilege here is a gain or profit arising from corporate activities - aka "income."

There has NEVER been a Supreme Court case which determined that a citizen living and working in one of the several states, and exchanging their labor for money with a private employer, was liable for the "income" tax imposed by 26 USC subtitle A, unless that person had first elected to be treated as if it was imposed on them.

You will find no case ever by the SCOTUS declaring that ordinary Americans in the several states, owe this tax on the money they receive in exchange for their labor. Not one.

Any serious study of the 16th amendment and the income tax will lead you to the real tax act in question, which is the 1909 Corporate Excise Tax Act.

It doesn't get more plain than that.

The solution is not violence, it is educating the masses that they have been had. And educating government employees that they are mistaken.
