The Votes Are In: The Official Tea Party Leader is Ron Paul

0 votes

The Tea Party movement has cast a loud and resounding vote for change within the Republican Party earlier today when Ron Paul won the Conservative Political Action Conference's 2010 Straw Poll. Ron Paul's received 31% of the vote, better than Mitt Romney (22%) and Sarah Palin (7%) combined. Romney had been the winner of the last three CPAC polls and had many cheers after the vote; while Palin is being cultivated by many in the mainstream media as the unofficial leader of the upstart Tea Party movement.

The reaction from the audience to the straw poll results was mixed and there were many boos when Ron Paul's name was called. Longtime CPAC pollster and presenter, Tony Fabrizio, seemed to cater to the booing members of the crowd by stating that 53% of the voters were not satisfied with the crop of likely candidates.

However, the presenter stated a few slides earlier that this year's straw poll saw the biggest turnout in CPAC history. Nearly 2400 votes were cast, almost 40% more than the previous year, which was then a CPAC record. He later followed that all 50 states and Washington DC were represented in the vote count - about twice as many states that are typically represented at CPAC. He also went on to say that 54% of the voters fell into the 18-25 age bracket. Another 20% of the voters fell into the 26-40 age bracket.

These results suggest that Ron Paul, the overwhelming winner, yet the oldest candidate in the field, is more effectively striking a chord with a broader and younger segment of the population than any of the other Republican candidates. To the entrenched GOP leadership, many of whom have recently shifted their rhetoric so that is more appealing to the growing Tea Party, Ron Paul's CPAC straw poll victory is a blow to the gut and a wake-up call.

The Conservatives have

The Conservatives have spoken! Palin out, Ron Paul the leader of the Tea Party movement.

Its about time Sarah Palin

Its about time Sarah Palin got exposed for who she is. The fact she endorsed John McCain(when Ron Paul absolutely refused to, for good reasons), and she endorsed Rick Perry over Debra Medina, says all you really need to know about her. She just seems like a republican party yes-woman, someone without the fortitude to stand up and say no to endorsing the wrong people. IF she had got in Perry and McCain's face and said "No, I will NOT endorse you", and she had not made pro-war comments, I might change my mind about her. Her comments about making it seem like it would be a good idea for Obama to attack Iran was really bad as well. I think Sarah Palin should be shunned at Tea Parties, not welcomed in as a leader.

The DP is proof that the grassroots support for Ron Paul and his peaceful message of individual liberty is large, real, and not going away!

I wrote this myself, based on the info presented at CPAC...

so I guess you could say it's a DailyPaul.com exclusive article.

Well in that case

the reason there were boos is because there was a C4L meeting right before the announcement and the Paul people rushing to get back to hear it got shut out because of large crowds. So they ended up leaving mostly Paul's opposition inside. The cheers were out in the hall.

Great point...

Word has it that the Campaign for Liberty (C4L) folks, who had a great presence at CPAC 2010, were in the hall hooting and hollering about Glenn Beck's treatment of Debra Medina during a recent radio interview. The C4L uprising occurred just prior to Glenn Beck, who was the keynote speaker, was to take the stage - this was also when the straw poll results were announced. As I understand it, the C4L members got shut out during the straw poll announcement. This explains the boos when Ron Paul was announced the winner. If the Campaign for Liberty folks would have been let back in for the straw poll announcement they would have raised the roof with applause!

Thanks for this excellent article.

Wish I had written it.
Why so many Republicans cannot understand that only Dr. Paul will bring in the youth and independent voters for the Republican Party, I can't figure out. He keeps saying that freedom is popular, but since he is the only politician seeding it, he is popular as well. God Bless Dr. Paul!!!
