DP to see mass influx of "Newbies"
Submitted by Lao Tzua on Mon, 02/22/2010 - 11:22
Watching RP interviewed after the straw poll results made me realize that, with the way RP is on fire presently, the DP is going to see an avalanche of what some of you refer to derogatorily as "newbies".
I have been called this myself, though I am not a new RP supporter - just new to the DP. I usually take it as a sign of weakness.
But I'd like to suggest that if the DP would like RP to succeed on the grandest possible scale (and ourselves), labeling and insulting "newbies" for their newness to Ron Paul or other ideas is really counter-productive. So much so, that I have never seen and can't imagine Ron Paul ever doing it.
Most people retreat when insulted.
(It is a minority of us who just get tougher! :) )

I think you are mistaken.
I think you are mistaken. While I see a lot of troll accusations for certain types of posts or a question or two when someone states authoritarian type opinions, I have known most people here to welcome new members to the DP. I think people are especially interested to know how and why people responded to the message.
To me DP is one of the most civilized forums around. Try stating a conflicting opinion on Kos or one of the right wing forums and they will attack and ban. Here people, at worst, fiercely debate. My only criticism is that there should be a landing place with candidate/RP only information and videos. Not sure what that would look like, maybe a middle column, but that would be a better intro to the philosophy then wading through all the posts of random concerns.
Daily Paul is very welcoming, you are right!

of you beautiful, intelligent, fierce, eccentric, quixotic (just kidding) DPers!
I just love thinking about the people watching RP talk about his win tonight, looking him up online, and winding up reading your brilliant posts. You all make the world a better place.
Welcome the newcomers,

I couldn't agree more
there are some MLDs on this site, especially the ____ types who cram mumbo jumbo down people's throats
I think it is the duty of everyone who agrees with this post to make sure newbies are welcomed and defended
I call bull
I have witnessed you many times disparage people for being new to this site.
oh yeah?
Or maybe I tell it how it is. If you are here to troll or push your pet topic and nothing else, yes, I will smack some text around. Anyway, truely new people who are just trying to learn have never found a harsh word from me.

Don't be or get intimidated
We have plenty of people who can hold their own in a discussion ..Newby or not your welcome..
Lao Tzu,
I thank you for those words. They are good words and an appropriate admonishment to some people here who can get a little too carried away with being 'possessive' of this site.
I look forward to fresh ideas from fresh new people. I want to hear what they have to say and I personally don't give a damn if they were here for 4 minutes or if that is the only time they make a comment or a thread.
And I do not oppose 'new' people making threads. Its all good. If it is inappropriate I am sure people will respond accordingly.
Thank you, Anisha!
When they read what you wrote they will feel like staying.

"Member for 3 days..." blah blah
I notice that some people on this site try to use it as an insult that someone has been a member of the site for less time than them. Some of them seem to think that it actually makes them cooler than you because they've been on longer or post more often, when actually all it means is they don't have much of life outside the internet. If being a long-term member of this site is their source of self-pride and self-esteem, I feel sorry for them. Self-esteem should have a more substantial basis.
Others assume that you just now got involved with Ron Paul, as if this internet site encompasses the whole Ron Paul Revolution. They think being new to the site, is equivalent to being a newbie to Ron Paul. They should realize that this site is just one small segment of Ron Paul supporters. Most Paul supporters, which certainly numbers more than a million people, will never post to this site or even access it at all.
Another thing disturbing is there appears to be a "groupthink" here among the regulars. If anyone express ideas counter to the groupthink such as in opposition to certain conspiracy theories, they're attacked as "trolls." A "troll" apparently is just someone who disrupts the groupthink, trying to bring other points of view in or different takes on things.

We'd Probably Denounce Him As A Troll...
and scream for his banishment...

be an issue,he has a well respected user name I'm sure.

Newb's
Having spent some time on the Mises Institutes forums, I don't feel intimidated here myself (the environments are similar. It's the passion). You just have to grow some thicker skin if you don't already have it. LOL! I'm presuming we're all in this for the same general objective: To delegitimize the state?
Let's do it!
The state does a good job delegitimizing itself

Good job
Yes it does, but I don't mind helping to push it over the edge!

We're not here to delegitimize anything, we're here to promote LIBERTY!

Not here
Well, one logically follows the other: Promoting liberty does delegitimize the state. It's pretty simple.
What's up with the negativity/inflammatory thing? Name ONE post where I have been "negative/inflammatory". I think this is just your perception for some reason so, what is that reason?
