The Chemist's War:The little-told story of how the U.S. government poisoned alcohol during Prohibition with deadly consequences.

It was Christmas Eve 1926, the streets aglitter with snow and lights, when the man afraid of Santa Claus stumbled into the emergency room at New York City's Bellevue Hospital. He was flushed, gasping with fear: Santa Claus, he kept telling the nurses, was just behind him, wielding a baseball bat.

Before hospital staff realized how sick he was—the alcohol-induced hallucination was just a symptom—the man died. So did another holiday partygoer. And another. As dusk fell on Christmas, the hospital staff tallied up more than 60 people made desperately ill by alcohol and eight dead from it. Within the next two days, yet another 23 people died in the city from celebrating the season.

Doctors were accustomed to alcohol poisoning by then, the routine of life in the Prohibition era. The bootlegged whiskies and so-called gins often made people sick. The liquor produced in hidden stills frequently came tainted with metals and other impurities. But this outbreak was bizarrely different. The deaths, as investigators would shortly realize, came courtesy of the U.S. government.

The government of the people, by the people, for the people...

...has never had a problem killing even it's own people. And yet 'the people' continue to support it. Why?

and your answer to the problem is.....

So your saying people should

So your saying people should continue to support a purported government the kills it's own people? Wow now there's a solution.

I have heard it said the first step to correcting a problem is recognizing the problem and the second step is to stop the behaviour that created and perpetuates the problem... Just a thought...

Sorry

I didn't see it and this just shocked me.
It happens to me all the time, today actually.
I posted about the Supreme Court decision on Miranda rights this morning and when I checked the article it was off the list on the right and x(a great bringer of news here) had one up.Oh well, sometimes people are picky about commenting on articles.
The responses on the article over on slate actually blame the people for drinking it not the gov for poisoning it.Such fools over there.
Again my apologies :)

Oh, no problem at all. :-)

Oh, no problem at all. :-) I'm just glad that this article is getting some attention. It's unreal some of the horrible things that our government does and has done in the past to even our own people.

Wow

Ten Thousand people.

Probably more.
I'm guessing some never went to the hospital for fear of prosecution, and just died at home.

Thanks

It's a great article.
It's just so wrong on so many levels what they did and this is the first I've heard of this.
Really makes you wonder what goes through these peoples(gov) minds.
