8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile, Tsunami Warnings for Pacific Rim

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and half and setting off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine.

The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, and at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Its epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.

Hope it doesn't turn out as bad as the media is trying to make it sound. They're making it sound like it's the end of Hawaii.

Although the weather channel online had Tsunami alerts posted when I checked a couple of hours ago, the only local news stations covering the quake and Tsunami are in Spanish. I've been learning about the terramoto and the tsunami in muy rapido Español.

Since I live a few miles inland, I'm not expecting to see anything, but I'm less than 100 feet above sea level, so let's hope the 2' estimate is correct! I'm only one block from La Ballona Creek which empties into the ocean.

I dont remember seeing this many serios earthquakes so close in duration . I hope yellowstone dont blow this year? I would love to see the new climate change people say earthquakes are from too much carbon dioxide .

no tsunami in Japan area - a 7.0 "quake"
the huge "quake" in Haiti sure didn't cause one - hmmm
8.8 sure should cause a big one - dontcha think?

UPDATE - the news says we dodged a bullet - no major
tsunami from an 8.8 so called quake ....

Experts warned that a tsunami could strike anywhere in the Pacific, and Hawaii could face its largest waves since 1964 starting at 11:19 a.m. (4:19 p.m. EST, 2119 GMT), according to Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Tsunami waves were likely to hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores within 24 hours of the earthquake. The U.S. West Coast and Alaska, too, were threatened.

Let's hope Hawaii escapes unscathed...

A lot more people out at 4 in the morning than usual.

They are supposed to blow the sirens around 6 this morning.

Often we joke about surfs up - but this one actually looks like a threat.

They Know of potential devastation a tsnunami can cause, why delay any earlier warning sirens and more orderly evacuation with more time allowed?
That caught my attention right away, why would they take Any chances? Sad reminders of Katrina and and the Denial of citizens "need to know" ASAP!
Looks like the Mad HAARP Scientists have been playing with their toys again? What does Haiti, Japan and now Chile have in common with each other on the global theater stage? Have they angered the elitists one way or another, or refused to comply with orders from G-20? I would bet $$ that their is a common denominator somewhere! Either that or This world is in the (inceasing number and strength) birthing pains described in Revelation, Jesus will be returning to Rapture His Church before He allows the Really bad Stuff To HTF AND these events are a final wake up call to lukewarm Christians and the world!

......Can there be natural earthquakes?

What about the 1906 Quake of San Francisco, was that El HAARPO?

Is there a list of HAARP caused earthquakes vs natural earthquakes -- that would make posting easier, don't you think?

My grandmother has talked about one she saw there in like the 60's or something that was pretty bad too, and there wasn't nearly the amount of people there then as there is now.
