While Traficant is a feisty guy and rarin' to go, he's been surprised at how many people out there are ready to support his next run. I got a call late last night to come next week and bring guests.

Washington, D.C. was reeling under the impact of two consecutive blizzards— the worst storm to hit the nation’s capital in recorded history— and another storm was predicted. Yet, some 150 people still crowded into the lecture hall at the Capitol Skyline Hotel on Capitol Hill to welcome former Congressman Jim Traficant—now a weekly columnist for AMERICAN FREE PRESS—back to Washington where he once reigned as perhaps the most colorful (and certainly the most outspoken) figure in Congress during the 17 years he served in the House of Representatives.

Traficant also said he has committed to speaking at a February event in Washington sponsored by the American Free Press, though he is not sure if the terms of his parole will allow him to travel.
The invitation, Traficant said, is part of an effort to encourage him to run for president.
“There’s a group out of Washington, and in several cities around the country, that want to bring back the old Reform Party, combine it with the tea party and bring the Libertarians in and everybody, and they want me to run as an independent for president,” Traficant said.
“I told them I think you’re all getting high smoking dope. And you know what they told me? They said, ‘to the contrary, you have a base following in all 48 contiguous states,’” he said. “So I’m going to address a group down there Feb. 13, unless the government says I can’t travel. And if they do that, we’ll hold it in Cleveland.”

If he is going to run for Congress from an Ohio district, why announce in Harrisburg, PA, a long way away. When you Mapquest Harrisburg, OH you find that there are 3 Harrisburgs in OH. Which is the real Harrisburg?

Well
I saw Traficant speak at the most recent End the Fed rally in Cleveland. His heart is indeed in the right place by aboloshing the IRS and the income tax. However, he wants to replace that theft with a VAT. Perhaps he should refer to the Constitution on the other forms of income generation available to the Federal Government to fund their expenditures.
I do not speak against his base ideas or him as a person. He has fought just as hard as Dr. Paul on the item of the IRS and the Fed and his fight against their financial terrorism landed him in prison for some of his abuses of the system for his benefit. I respect him greatly for putting himself on the line. There is not need to replace to income tax with anything.
However, he does speak against the Federal Reserve and urges people to push for ending the Fed. His viewpoints definitely go against the status quo and I applaud him for that. If he could only ditch the VAT sales tax as a replacement for the income tax he would be a better candidate.

The national sales tax is a step in the right direction. We will never be able to gain enough support to get rid of the income tax.
Here is some of the benefits of the national sales tax:
tax is only applied to new products both foreign and domestic. there is no tax on our exports. this means that it will be cheaper for companies to produce product in america, because companies abroad will still have to factor their nations taxes into their cost.
While prices of goods and services will initially jerk up, market forces will rapidly pull the prices back down. remember, taxes on businesses factors into the cost of what they produce or sell. The prices will come down because initially the business will have a larger profit margin to work with because of the lack of taxes. this gives a lot of room for those market forces to work their magic.
its not so bad to think that even after the tax is applied, the prices will stabilize around where they were before. i.e. no real change for us consumers. Yet it would be such a huge change for the productive capacity of the country. many will argue that it will be easy for the lawmakers to raise the tax, to which they do not realize that it is just as easy to lower it.
i would gladly give up the income tax for that scenario. Now is the perfect time to do this, given our current economic climate. give people their incomes back, give small business a short burst in revenue,and the end result is a real simple recovery with lasting growth. It's not a bad idea for a consumption economy like ours.

The flaws with the present version called the "Fair Tax" are
numerous, but most importantly this:
It creates a vast welfare program called the "pre-bate."
It does NOT in any way attempt to reign in spending and thus we will either eventually end up with BOTH an income and sales tax, or a VERY high sales tax.
Income taxes are anathema to liberty. If we can't defeat it on those grounds, then we are doomed, just let the whole damn thing collapse already.
Sales taxes should ONLY be passed by local governments by referendum. Besides, there is NO constitutional authority for a national sales tax. NONE.
Cut federal crime syndicate
Cut federal crime syndicate by 80% and you won't need many federal taxes.

I'd rather that be the case, but I would gladly make this concession, because I realize that what I want would be very hard to achieve in this politically polarized atmosphere. As it bolsters the economy, less taxes will be needed. Politicians will fight over who gets to lower the national sales tax as they fight for votes.

I hope he does make a run. He could do a lot for the truth and liberty movement. He is not about to stop exposing the criminals in Washington. He spent 7 years in the big house standing up to those criminals. Go Jim.

... but he cannot do our cause any good... doesn't matter how many years he spent in prison... just in principle... felons lose their right to vote, but he can run for political office? It is incongruous.

...his being a felon may have little meaning to people wanting someone who will stand up against the system plagued with criminals out to destroy this country.
Besides, even in prison, he managed to get 15% of the vote.

Traficant and the American "Free" Press
There just isn't any reason to consider Traficant to be worthy of our support. All of a sudden he wants to bring in "Libertarians" to support him. We already have real leaders who have paid plenty of "dues" in the movement such as Ron Paul and Gary Johnson who have shown they are "seriously" for liberty and voting records to back them up. We don't need a Traficant hijacking the movement. Why doesn't he run a credible campaign for Congress and show us he's serious about being for liberty instead of thinking he can take over the movement by announcing for President.
Regarding the American "Free" Press. Everytime I go to their website, they seem to take a very anti-Semitic line to say the least. It would be more accurate to call it the American "Collectivist" Press. They don't have anything to do with the liberty movement.
I was at that Conference.
It was such a weird cross-section of the fringe that was there. Hell, we might have seemed moderate comparatively! There was dislike for the Israeli Establishment there, but it was hard to pinpoint if any one person was anti-semitic. I wouldn't be surprised if some were and some were not. However, of the multiple times that I've met Jim, he has always come across as genuine in his beliefs. The first thing he said in his speech there was, "I do not agree with the American Free Press, but they do print news you will not hear anywhere else." or something along those lines. So he immediately disassociated himself from their most radical views. You can argue whether or not it was for political reasons, but I do firmly believe that his position is warranted.

The American Free Press and it's predecessor The Spotlight is totally dedicated to liberty. The Spotlight at one time in the early to late seventies had over 200,000 subscribers and a active Congressional lobby group that lobbied for tax reform, limited constitutional government, non-interventionist foreign policy. Sound familiar? And all before the advent of the Internet. The American Free Press currently has about 70,000 subscribers. Not only are they a part of the liberty movement I would have to say in the 70's and early 80's, along a few groups like the John Birch Society, that they were the liberty movement. If their reporting is accurate concerning undue influence of Israel, the Aipac, the ADL, on U.S. foreign policy, then I do not see how that reporting can be considered anti-Semitic. Now, they do support a racialist view in support of what they perceive as white-American culture, but the last time I checked that is not against the law and not inherently racist, it's called free speech. Their stated policy is that they hold no animosity towards any racial or religious group, and that they in no way support discrimination towards any racial or religious group or people.

I believe Ohio is one of 12 States that allow felons to re-register to vote, but they need to produce documentation from the State prison system and/or their parole board, that they in fact have been released from prison and that they are satisfactorily completing the terms of their parole. Having said that I personally don't see a Trafficant presidential run ever gaining much traction. He would be better off attempting to regain his Congressional seat if anything.
