MSM, RIP - It's time for new terminology - IMPORTANT!

0 votes

I'm sure most (if not all) of us have heard or read those in the Old Media deride Paul supporters for using the term "Main Stream Media", as if we are the ones who are out of touch. Now, we all know how blatantly false this is, and also how they are trying to save face by saying that we are "wackos" who live on the fringes of society. Well, it's time to turn the tide. We need to abandon the whole "MSM" terminology and replace it with something that expresses the true nature of what is going on with mass communications - not just here in the USA, but around the world.

I am proposing that EVERY Paul supporter (heck, Kucinich/Gravel supporters and anarchists are welcome too) STOP using the term "Main Stream Media" and replace it with "Old Media". There is just too much proof out there that the (formerly) major media outlets are outdated and are no longer the voice of the people, and we CANNOT let them hold onto this perception of influence any longer. Do a Google search for "what percentage of americans watch network news?" and look at the results... they speak for themselves. Let's use this info to our advantage when we approach people with RP's message, and start spreading the word about the "Old Media"!

I'm looking forward to everyone's comments on this. If you have a better term than "Old Media" in mind, let's hear it, and then let's start reclaiming what's ours!

media name

I had heard the term 'retail media', but I still found that to be 'wanting' as real definition. Even 'lame' or 'lamestreet' media' doesn't cut it, though they have been quite instrumental in creating lame-thinking people.
It requires a bought and paid-for media to accomplish what has been done. Thus perhaps 'mogul media'; 'bought media', or 'mass slave media' (which is still MSM!) would be more appropriate.

Lamestream Media

I've been using "Lamestream Media" since I first heard it a year or so ago.

CONTROLLED MEDIA

I like the term "controlled media" better than "old media."

It's gaining traction!

Well it seems we are making headway in ditching the whole MSM thing... Big thanks to Brian from the Paulunteer for publishing my full article on the topic:

The other day I was in and out of the car listening to the Hugh Hewitt show, and his guest was Tom Brokaw. He was discussing a new book he just published, and though I didn't catch the context it was mentioned in, he did use the term Old Media to describe the era of television that he was a part of. Now I'm not suggesting that he found the term through the RP movement, but it was a pretty cool coincidence to hear it on the air none the less. Did anyone else catch that show?

Media

How about Murdoch's Media. M & M's

The biggest idiots

are the ones that pay 60 bucks a month to have their brains washed by propaganda on cable TV. Life is better without Rupert Murdoch and his mafia goons blasting out mind control in your home. Protect your kids and yourself and BAN THE CABLE TV. And touching the primary results do not listen to or believe any results that come out over Murdoch outlets.
The federal election commission is the only source that might be correct.

Lets see how the old media

Lets see how the old media tries to spin that.
We all know that when we need information and news we get it
from the NEW MEDIA.

How about corrupt media?

That's what they are.

Old Media..It works fine. Great idea!

Besides, I've already notified my MSM coworkers, that they have been renamed Old Media.

I haven't told them why yet.

Whoops! Sorry "20CBM" Double Post

Bump Tiddy Bump Bump...

Re:

I'm all for it. In fact, I proposed the same thing a week or 2 ago on this website. I thought we should call the internet the PCM or "Peoples' Choice Media". I also like the idea that someone posted referring to the "mainstream media" as "downstream media". It's a great catchy slang term. At any rate, let's keep this going and come to a concensus. Personally, I like "Downstream Media" or simply DM and Peoples' Choice Media or simply PCM.

Some of us were using that since day one...

As well as "Paulunteer", both of which are hitting lexicon status...

Next: "Slick Willard"...

"Fight wars for a just cause, not just because!"

I must say I have been

I must say I have been getting more and more hits every day just from people searching for "paulunteer". Cool, eh?

20CBM!

"20CBM"

This is totally relevant. Please read until the end. It will stick, and for the right reasons.

1st: "OLD" Media won't work because it's meaning will change with Time.

2nd: "OLD" is also insufficiently descriptive of the nature of the Old media and what makes it obsolete.

"20CBM," or 20th CENTURY BROADCAST MEDIA might be more efficient and descriptive. Read on! It's just right, you'll see.

"20CBM" would both, primarily, highlight the critical elements of the (previously named) MSM: namely, the fact that information was disseminated in a "One (entity) to Many" fashion, vs "Any to Many"...that is, it was BROADCAST...and, secondarily, "20CBM" would also officially decree the Obsolescence of the heretofore "MSM," in both Word and measure of Adequacy...that is, it is from the Previous Century and is also Insufficient.

3rdly, "20CBM" is practically synonymous with and is a Repudiation of RUPERT MURDOCH!. He who tried to hide his kingdom's obsolescence by CHANGING its NAME from "20th CENTURY FOX!" By pretending it had become Someone and SomeTHing other than an archaic, Primative, and entirely TYRRANICAL means of disseminating news, information, and even of defining DISCOURSE!

"20CBM" means we will not have our speech filtered by NEO-CONSERVATIVE LIARS and 20TH CENTURY ROBBER BARONS!

"20CBM!"

I like the sentiment, but...

...I disagree that the meaning of "Old Media" will change over time, because it's not the Media that's old, it's the Message. Saying that the meaning will change over time implies that there will be a return to the old ways, and once everyone knows that the Emperor has no clothes, they will never want to see his naked fat pimply ass again!

On the other hand, there is certainly room for a variety of terminology depending on the context of the discussion - for example in an academic setting. You might shorten it to 20CM though, to include print media as well.

"20CBM" vs. "Old Media"

The fact that you have to explain the meaning of "20CBM" virtually proves that the name will not catch on.

Personally, I prefer the term "corporate media" or "restricted media" as mentioned previously, but these terms have a touch of conspiracy theory vibe to them, and also don't take into account the fact that corporations such as AOL and Yahoo have internet news.

"Old Media" has much more potential because it's so straightforword. It is obvious that the internet encompasses the "New Media" and television and news papers make up the bulk of the "Old Media."

No one would refute that, either on logical grounds or on less logical reactionary grounds.

I have a feeling the term "Old Media" is here to stay, even if the powers it refers to are not.

Well said, and I agree

Well said, and I agree completely. You certainly can't have a catchphrase that has to be explained to people. "Old Media" is self explanatory and vastly descriptive. Not only that, it almost begs the corollary; "New Media" be applied to the Internet.

Downstream Media

Because they are last to know, and they merely disseminate information gathered by others.

I was pretty proud to have come up with this, until I Googled it and saw that it was the name of several companies. Still, I think I'll start using it. Along with the other good suggestions here. We can give them as many names as we want; they'll never be dominant again, so it's safe to pick on them. :-)

it's not a direct insult but it perfectly captures how TV, radio and newspapers are no longer the vanguard of news. I hope it catches on.
