The Post Office faces a 238 billion dollar loss over the next ten years. They're proposing doing away with Saturday delivery.
Snail Mail is on the decline and will cease to exist in this century. Here's a solution to the problem.
1) Go to delivery three days per week. Half the population would receive mail MWF, the other half TThS.
Does anyone need delivery 5 or 6 days per week?
This reduces the need for letter carriers by half.
2) Raise stamp costs to cover any deficit. Some object that that would reduce demand for Post Office services. Of course that's the idea.
3) Freeze Post Office hiring. The unions would balk at layoffs, but might go for this. workers would be doing less work. Let the number of employees gradually decline by retirement and attrition.
This is a way to ease the Post Office out of existence. This is my answer, what's yours?
