Its based on triangulating between what's reckoned as "extreme" positions. And also based on an assumption that the bases are relative and not absolute. And an inability or unwillingness to research and apprehend first principles.

You should see his intervew with Bill Maher back before the 2004 elections. Oreilly is trying to make the case for Bush, but then starts saying how there would be no difference between Bush and Kerry. It's hilarious.
