We've got a little over 250 three week old chick here on the farm with about 50 more coming in this week. Anyone else got chicken fever this spring?
Here are a few fun one's to start with...
Death Metal Rooster! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A43JOxLa5MM&feature=grec
Beste Denizli Kräher (non-music version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEiWoWoM4R0
The Ultimate Chicken Coop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xBiSp6rQM0
Polyface Farm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxTfQpv8xGA
Question: What came first; the Hen or the Rooster?

I was going to buy some
I was going to buy some chicks last weekend but bought a few ducks instead.

Aren't they just the cutest!?
after baby chicks of course... I see them at the feed store and they are sooo cute!
I may get some ducks if I can get my pond dug - and if it holds water.
Watch Out
for the Chupacabra

The same thing happened to my neighbor last week
They had about 30 chickens and one night the creature snuck in there and killed every last one of them, then proceeded to eat them! It ate so many that it decided rather than go out in the cold snow to digest its feast, it would just lay down in the nice soft hay, being so glutted it could hardly move. That morning the rancher brought his rifle to the battlefield, seeing the carnage, and the chupacabra, he opened fire on his enemy. It turned out to be one big, bad kitty cat, otherwise known as a Bobcat, with a very full tummy.
Thanks for the reminder
of what MSM news is like. Pesky reptilians and BS "news" reporters. Ha ha - lol!

I think chickens are the answer
to survival better than gold or silver. They are small and eat bugs, reproduce, lay eggs to eat or barter, Gold and Silver can't do that.

What You Want Is
The goose that laid the golden eggs.
Gold and silver are merely neutral against the dollar, more or less. They can hold value.
A single chicken does not live forever, but they do reproduce, given a chance.
It depends on whether you want something beyond survival.

The Natural History of the Chicken

I'm so glad that you saw when I posted this the first time. Was it your first time to see it?

It was my first time
It reminded me of Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show Even Napoleon Dynamite (style) a bit. I thought it was great!
now on to the toads I go...
It's nearly spring, when do we
hear some baby chick stories? I don't have chickens at this time but miss them and hope I'll be able to raise some in the future.
I have a little over 275 chicks
right now. And then I go to the feed store yesterday and can't help myself (it was my birthday) - ended up buying 2 cuckoo maran (dark chocolate eggs) and 2 red laced blue wyandotte chicks (pretty birds)! Maybe I'll get a picture account online and start posting pics?!
maybe a flickr account?

I'd love pictures to go along with your post's.
How do I sneak chickens into a subdivision ;p

- just go to facebook and type in fibonacci farm -
.what is the big box of sawdust for
don't the little chicken popper's get lost in there?

Thanks cyndezu! (for the link)
For some reason every time I tried my link it wasn't working right.
The 'box' is called an Ohio Style brooder
http://www.plamondon.com/brooder.shtml
Underneath it is like a broody hen... warm cozy and safe. On top is about 3-4 inches of insulation (pine chips/shavings) that doubles as space for the birds as they grow (275 chicks in that set-up in a 10x10 "room"). Mine are getting up on top of there now at 4.5 weeks old. My box is the 4x6 with 2 - 100 watt red floodlights (that's all I need now). When I first got the chick it was chilly outside and I ran 4 - 100 watt bulbs to keep it at 90F.
My take is if they get lost in there I call them chicken n' chips... MMMmmm! hahaha lol.
oh, well that makes sense ;p
i was just a wee bit concerned about the chic's getting lost in there.
makes me wish i didn't downsize to a hoa subdivision, i'd love to make one and have chic's even for just one season, cute and tasty win/win
I looked into raising ducks once, had them as a child.

You build a coop like quiltingsando's and get some extra
egg containers for your neighbors. 3-4 chickens won't bother a soul. No roosters though!

How fun! Do post them please

I got 2 dozen Silver Laced
I got 2 dozen Silver Laced Wyandotte hens and 2 roosters.
Good birds as they lay through the winter.

They are really pretty.
I don't think I have seen a chicken that I haven't liked. lol

quiltingsando - are you sure?
Cornish (meat birds) are so dumb and lazy they are hard to love... but have you ever seen one of these? LOL!

Ditto on the cornish-x cross
all those things do is eat, poop, and sleep. Those things would lay down at the feeder and water when they were chicks. They sure do taste good though. They were ready to butcher at 4-5 weeks.

Christ...McMurry is a seller of exotic breeds....
are you affiliated with McMurry? I have bought from them for years. Is this your advertisement? What gives? Are you an employee? Or do you have chicks you actually raised from nesting hens?
I just bought them from
I just bought them from McMurry. I'm not affiliated. I was just showing where I got them.
Christ, something wrong with that?

Sorry....
you sounded like you were offering them for sale. My mistake. They do have (McMurry) an awesome breed selection!
Guess I worded it wrong. They

Cant answer your question
The reason is this...Was the hen smiling and the rooster crowing..or was the hen laying there with a look of..'is that ALL???' while the rooster smiled..happy..thinking himself the stud as he rolled over and lite up a smoke?..
I just couldnt resist saying that
