Iceland says NO to IMF, EU, UK & NE!

I think I am gonna move to Iceland soon. At least one country in the world can stand up against the Giants and say 'NO!'.

(CNN)- Iceland's voters overwhelmingly rejected a deal to pay billions of dollars it owes to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

With around 90 percent of votes counted, just over 93 percent said no and just under 2 percent said yes. Not enough votes remain to be counted to change the result. Some 62.5 percent of Iceland's roughly 200,000 register voters cast ballots, the ministry said.

The referendum was on a law about repaying the Netherlands and UK, which helped savers in their own countries who lost money in a failed Icelandic Internet bank.

The British and Dutch governments came up with more than $5 billion for bailing out people who lost money in Icesave -- an online retail bank branch of Landsbanki. That Icelandic bank failed in October 2008, along with two other banks in the country.

This is great, however according to the article, Iceland is

trying to join the European Union! Why? They will be run by the banks!

Debbie

I am assuming its the

I am assuming its the government who is pushing to join the EU and not the people of Iceland. However I am sure some Icelandic people would look favorably on joining the EU to replace their currency with the Euro after the Kronor's massive devaluation. Many Icelanders have loans in foreign currency and are struggling to stay afloat.

Immigrant Song

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
Hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new land,
To fight the horde, sing and cry: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are young overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

With three hundred thousand people, they're just a large extended family. I hope they are the future. The world needs smaller countries, not those with hundreds of millions of people.
It's doubtful they'd want a lot of Americans moving in and messing up the neighborhood. LOL

Haha

I've been thinking the same.

BBC: 93% of Icelanders said "NO!" with only 1/3 of vote counted!

Only 1/3 of vote counted, so % "NO" could even go higher.

Icelanders react to 'No' result
18:46 GMT, Sunday, 7 March 2010

Voters in Iceland have overwhelmingly rejected proposals to pay back debts to the UK and the Netherlands in the wake of the collapse of the Icesave bank.

With a third of results counted, 93% of voters said "No" in Saturday's referendum.

Here, Icelandic voters reflect the huge opposition to the proposals and give their views on how Iceland should handle its huge debts.

I voted "No" because there are no legal obligations for Icelandic taxpayers to compensate the British and the Dutch for debts incurred by private companies beyond their worth. At least the losses caused by the flaws in the international banking regulatory system should be shared equally per head of the three populations. We want fairness, not blackmail.
Sölvi Eysteinsson, Reykjavik

I voted "No". I voted "No" to an unfair deal, with a colonising mentality. I voted "No" to the oppression of the small by the big. I voted "No" to global capitalism. I voted "No" to greed. I voted "No" to standing by as my people take on burdens which do not belong on their shoulders. I voted "No". Tomorrow the world will follow my lead.

Not a big concern, Iceland

Not a big concern, Iceland had 2 large Earthquakes in the year 2000 and 2001 so there isn't a large amount of pressure left in the faultlines and it will take a while for the pressure to build up.

Also no city in Iceland is built on top of the faultline that runs through the entire country. Building codes also are fashioned to make buildings earthquake resistant for the most part.

I was thinking the same thing

I thought it was interesting how people noticed that it isn't the taxpayers debt, so why are they obligated to pay it back. The same issue happened with our bailouts where we FRN holders were forced to pay bail out banks who made bad loans.

Thanks dexter.

I think it news also when 230,000 people tell 50M to get lost. that's big news!

This sort of "medicine" however will never be put up

to the people for a vote here in the U.S.

We don't have national referendums. (nor should we)

Even if we did, enough morons would vote for it. People in this country will vote for anything that is bad for them. Witness present events and the policies they support.

Bump for world info.

I tried with this story last night, but there were no takers.
I hope you get some action.

It's important because of the pressure on the Euro and the rest of the EU members in the same situation "PIIGS."
