So now you are a criminal, via the thought police, just for buying weapons? Unbelievable!!!
Concerns about an Oregon Department of Transportation employee who purchased several guns after being placed on leave prompted law enforcement across Southern Oregon to step in.
Negotiators and a SWAT team from Medford police safely took a man — whose name wasn't released — into protective custody Monday morning in the 500 block of Effie Street, Medford police said in a news release.
He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation.
The man recently had been placed on administrative leave from his job and was "very disgruntled," the news release said...

A comment from the article.
"The atf requires a licensed dealer to fill out and submit to the atf and local law enforcement a "multiple firearm purchase" form anytime someone buys 2 or more handguns from the same dealer within 5 business days."
I know this is true here in Texas.
Too bad intelligence couldn't have been that swift on 9/11.
BTW, that is an interesting avatar you have there pityocamptes. Just curious about your handle, and your avatar. What do they represent, if anything?
Not being judgmental, just curious.

Will they impound our cars because we might speed?
Will they taser us because we might jaywalk?
He should not be arrested without a warrant or probable cause.
If the police had no legal
If the police had no legal reason for arresting this man, then I suppose he won't be needing his job after all. He'll probably soon have a lawsuit going against the police department for all sorts of violations.
...
its not the guy who buys a bunch of guns you gotta worry about
it is the guy who gets one or two and a lot of clips with them.
JUST SAYING
Wellllll
Considering what we have been reading in the news lately, I can see where people might be a little edgy about this. The coincidence of his being a disgruntled employee and then purchasing guns after wards is a little nerve wracking. Unfortunately, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, baby, and just gives them more excuses to restrict our rights.

Taken at face value this is what law enforcement is SUPPOSED to do. Prevent crime and violence.
To stretch this into a NWO, Big Brother event is adolescent.
If your husband or wife or brother or sister was the one who had to discipline this guy I'm sure you wouldn't want to po po missing this guy's actions.
"GINO" = Government In Name Only
That's not the way freedom works.
We could all be arrested for what we might do.
They better have more evidence than just a hunch that he might have done something.

Damn...
how did I miss this??? I was born at RVMC, and my mom still lives in the same house that I grew up in. I know exactly where Effie St. is, and currently live in the surrounding area. I agree that we don't know all of the facts-I will pass this on to our local talk show host Bill Meyer to hopefully further investigate the issue.
Let's not jump to
Let's not jump to conclusions. It says he was very disgruntled. Did he make threats? If he did, and then purchased firearms, there could be cause for concern.
We don't know enough about the facts. How would you feel about it if you had been this man's supervisor, and on his way out, he made a threat against you, or your family?
I'm not saying that this is the case. I am saying that until we know the facts, we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions.
Well I hope the local people jump
on this and get the facts and push back any infringements on civil liberties. This looks very dangerous, though your point about needing more facts is valid.
Hmm, this is equivalent to preemptive war.
A preemptive strike! Question: How did they know about the administrative leave? Is that found in a background check? Apparently not, if he obtained the guns without any problem.
However, they don't arrest the men who say that they are GOING to kill their wife, and sure enough their wife turns up dead and they say that nothing could have prevented this tragedy.
Could Be Wise
Clearly, they did not appear to have probable cause to arrest him for crimes he had not committed, yet.
It could be a wise thing that they did not worry about convicting him, and instead, worried about preventing him from hurting himself or someone else. Obviously, somebody knew something and called police in.
Contrast this with the recent events when parents of troubled sons called for help and no one did anything until it was too late.
Pick your battles, people.

True to some degree. However,
True to some degree. However, in this country will still have LAWS and a little thing called probable cause which MUST be outlined as a current violation of the law.
Just because I say I'm going to kill so and so (1st amendment right), does not warrant a search and seizure from the police and a trip to the nut farm. Perhaps a visit, but nothing more, and certainly not SWAT.
Yes, they MAY have done a good thing, because no one can fortell the future. However, was it really? How many rights did they trample on, and how did it alter setting a precedence for the future.

But this is a slippery slope that we probably do not want to embark. If we start allowing this sort of action now, what will it turn into in another 10 years?
