Today there are an estimated 60 million child brides worldwide - and some are as young as 7 years old.

Congress is considering a bill that would give the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) more power to work with countries around the world to fight child marriage.

Plans to improve the lives of girls and boys worldwide include programs that help prevent child marriage by educating families and communities on the risks (one risk is that young girls are dying by being forced to bear children), helping children to report cases, spreading awareness of the prevalence of child marriage, and advocating for children's rights.

WTH is wrong with these people? Why does the US need to tell them that this is wrong? Are they freaking brain dead? I don't get it.

Here is a link to an article from the Daily Bell (RP is a contributing writer) on capitalism. It's one the best break downs on why we get so confused and stuck with the term "capitalism" itself.

None of the above behavior is acceptable to us in our culture but these situations exist mostly due to economic stresses even if religion is part of the impetus. Children are sold into sexual slavery every day. Even in this country. I'm sure you're aware that all the education in the world is not going to stop struggling families from making these decisions. Even free markets will not erase all the perverts who like little children but it would enable people (many 3rd world families) ways and means to keep their children instead of selling them or giving them up too early for marriage.

"The most generous gift humans can be given (by other humans) is the ability to live their lives as they see fit. This is a supreme privilege, though it is DOES NOT imply human beings ought to abandon each other, nor refuse to help each other out. This is a facile interpretation, promoted by enemies of freedom."

Firs of all learn the

Firs of all learn the definition of capitalism and stop repeating socialist propaganda you hear in the media. Capitalism is free markets, free trade, and free thought, without government intervention. We have not had capitalism in this country in at least 60 years. What the media is calling Capitalism is socialist/fascism!

Second Capitalism has nothing to do with child bride etc. Most of the backward ass countries that do this are one of the following: theocracy, totalitarian, socialist/fascist, monarchy, or oligarchy.

Quite right.

Imagine if some Chinese or African NGO showed up in the USA or Britain to educate us on our moral backwardness.

Actually, I think they should. That would be pretty funny!

I am a cultural relativist

Just because it's considered wrong to us, it doesn't make it wrong universally. It should also be noted that when we think of "marriage" we think of a much different kind of relationship than many other cultures do. What is probably going on is families are in such economic stress that they are collecting bridewealth early and getting one mouth at someone else's table. When the WWF (wildlife, not wrestling) was putting pressure on the Ki in northern Kenya, it was common for children to be considered grown-up and self reliant at age 5. It generally boils down to economics and involuntary inclusion in the Western economic bubble.

"It generally boils down to

"It generally boils down to economics and involuntary inclusion in the Western economic bubble."
That's a sad, sorry commentary on Western economics - if the sorry state of the world boils down to an involuntary inclusion in it. It doesn't say too much in favor of capitalism (or corporatism or WeverTF it boils down to), either. This is just one example of why I hate the selfish, greedy nature of capitalism. Sorry, Mike - I appreciate your comment and I hope that you won't take my dark response personally.

What don't you get?

One family gets money and one less mouth to feed and the other family gets an extra helper. To us it's abhorrent, to them it's no big deal. Who are we to judge?

Too bad for me and too bad for you, too!

I've admitted that I don't get it!!
Is there NOBODY out there who can explain it to me??
