I know that Greece has always had a "stay together, we're all the workers and we're all in the same boat" mentality- they are also a pretty homogenis population.

If I remember correctly these were young muslim youths.
Setting cars ablaze, it went on for a few weeks.
But I think it continues on a smaller scale to this day.

It's hard to tell if they were students, they were youthful, so I guess some of them were students.
Some reports had them as a high percentage of muslims.
Other reports say it was more of a class warfare thing.

Almost 9000 cars were set ablaze.
I would call those riots.
And they occurred within your time frame.
