thanks, northstar!
I sure wish I lived in the country
I used to live in a super small town and that was really nice. But being a little youngster long ago, my parents had a nasty divorce and most of us kids went with mom to the city. I want to go back, but there's just no work unless you own a resort. Otherwise, most work in the area is seasonal work in the resorts.

Everyone should read the book: One Second After
By William R. Forstchen
It is fiction, but so realistic, you'll have to pinch yourself. Forstchen weaves a very engaging and compelling scenario of the aftermath of an EMP attack.
The results of the people trying to cope are gruesome, and very believable. (I don't like "contrived" plots or character behavior, and this has none of it. All characters and their actions are believable and plausible)
Of course, we don't need a deliberate attack to do this sort of damage. We very well could experience this by way of a massive, well aimed solar flare. (or series of flares)
Forstchen covers things most people will never think of in this scenario. As well, many of the events he depicts, and the challenges faced by the people, are not unique to an EMP scenario.
If ever there was a book that could wake you up to begin the mental preparation necessary to handle such a life-altering experience, One Second After is it.
You won't want to put it down, and you will more than likely read the second half in one sitting, even if it means staying up till the crack of dawn.
While it is impossible to materially prepare for every scenario, mental preparation is within your grasp. Psychological and spiritual preparation are key as well. At the least, I've been able to determine by reading this book, that the city I live in will in all likelihood become a death trap very quickly. I will not stick around to find out. My butt will be "getting out of dodge" at the first hint of such an EMP event. (and yes, I have a destination in mind)
Bump: To make sure that we ARE ready.
Thanks.
