help a newbie out please:)
hey, i've finally got a little extra cash and have decided to invest in some silver. I'm completely new to this, so please forgive my horrible ignorance.
a few questions-
-where is the best place to buy online (keep in mind I'm in Canada, if that makes a difference)?
-I'm thinking about ordering this to start
http://www.apmex.com/Product/27493/Silver_Grain_Shot_999_Fin...
-is industrial silver fine to buy? does it have significantly less value?
-what does this quote mean "Only $0.79 over spot per ounce!"? what does "over spot" mean? Does that mean that this item is only $0.79 per ounce or something else?
-Is the price for this item (the 10oz package) $178.90, like it says at the bottom of the page, or is it $0.79 per ounce?
sorry for the stupid questions, i don't wanna make any mistakes:)
thnx for any help you can give me!

Canadian Montreal Olympic coins and junk silver
These were a great buy (the big ones) a year ago. They are also gorgeous. We gave a couple to our son for his birthday. He was delighted (he understands about silver).
Silver Maples Leafs, too.
You can get junk silver in Canadian shops. Junk silver is US coins that were in circulation before they took out the silver. In Canada you can get small bags of mixed quarters, half-dollars, and dimes. You want US coins because the silver content of our coins was higher than Canadian. The dealers pick out the fine silver coins and save them until they have a bag of $50 or $100 face value. Junk silver is absolutely always your best silver value.
I disagree (a little).
Canadian pre-66 quarters and dimes contain 80% silver. This is an acceptable level for bartering and, I would suspect, Canadians would more readily accept their own coins.
If I were Canadian, I wouldn't have any problem buying these coins over US.
I agree, yesliberty, junk is the way to go.

Thank you
I agree with your intuitive logic. However, Canadians who understand the difference between 80% & 90% will in fact go for the silver, which is why the junk US coins go out the door as soon as the dealer can accumulate enough of them, in preference to the Canadian. (I lived nearly twenty years primarily in Canada.) For the same reason, whether north or south of the border, I would spend my Canadian junk first, and hoard my US junk until I had to use it. :-)
Silver has such an interesting history. Until I started paying attention, I had no idea that British coins "lost" their silver so much sooner than North American coins.
APMEX tells you exactly what the price is, commission included.
Shipping is a set price no matter how much you buy. Shipping is free if you buy at least 25K of anything.
Just get some! Keep it right in your home in a safe, but not obvious place. Don't tell anyone about it. Home protection plan is essential.
It feels good to know that you own real money that does not require trust.
APMEX is a great company. I have used them before. No problems encountered.
THANKS!
Thankyou all for the help... really cleared afew things up for me... You peeps are great:)

You might want to hold off on purchasing anything until you educate yourself a little more. That's the best way to avoid making a mistake.

Thankyou, I'm not gonna buy
Thankyou, I'm not gonna buy anything right away, i still need to save up afew paychecks... in the mean time, I'm going to read up all i can about it.
It is customary to pay a 30%
It is customary to pay a 30% commission (which normally cover shipping) to buy silver or gold. I always prefer buying it from a local coin dealer because I have a hard time trusting anybody. I like cash and carry. I live in a metro area of about 300,000 people, so they aren't many coin dealers who can handle a decent sized purchase.

I scoped out...
I scoped out alot of online places and Apmex.com , like you suggested, seems to have the best prices and shipping costs.
The "over spot" price means you pay the current market rate per ounce PLUS the extra 79 cents per ounce.
The price for the item you metioned is $178.90 or $17.89 per ounce which is $7.90 over current market price (spot).
Not sure of what import fees Canada would charge. :|
What is your purpose for buying? Are you looking for a store of value, or are you looking to have something to buy essentials like food, water, clothing, medicine if the currency collapses or goes into hyperinflation?

A little of both... I don't
A little of both... I don't have alot of excess cash.. and i figured silver would be the best bet for something physical to have for tough times. thnx for the info, I truly appreciate it.
If it's...
If it's for tough times and buying necessities then go for the greatest # of coins you can get for your $$. Like rolls or bags of silver nickels, etc.
Larger value single coins may be harder to get "change" for if, for example, all you want at the moment is a small bag of groceries.

I can help a little
The Spot Price is the price that a commodity is being sold for in the market. Like when you hear that gold is going for $1000 an ounce, that is the spot price. Companies the deal with the selling of metals charge a certain amount over the spot price and buy under the spot price so they can make a profit.
Bump! for help with Silver buying!
