"SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Tuesday said farmers can harvest their genetically engineered sugar beets this year, ruling the economic impact too great and that environmental groups waited too long to request that the crop be yanked from the ground and otherwise barred from the market.

Nearly all sugar beets planted are genetically engineered and the crop accounts for half the nation's sugar supply."

Maybe that will finally cure my sweet tooth.

I really like how he based the decision on who stood to lose money, not what was safe or in the best interest of the public at large. I mean, his job is to interpret and apply law, not do the right thing, right?

Pretty soon

Monsanto will be the only one supplying our food. They already have corn, soy, cotton, canola.

If they label the ingredient as GMO Sugar but................

we know that will not happen.

They won't have to. Anti GMO

They won't have to. Anti GMO sentiment is strong enough to ensure most anyone selling non GMO sugar, will advertise it on their labels. So you can be pretty sure that unless a packet is labeled organic, non-gmo, or whatever, you'll be gorging on Monsanto's sweetest :)

I would imagine the same to hold for products containing sugar as well. If I was concerned about GMO, I would shy away from anything that is not labeled specifically as being GMO free.

We are in the early phase of a turning tide.

Governmental organs and politicians, who so far have been misinformed and manipulated by the GE proponents, are beginning to wake up to reality due to the information from NGO:s. Therefore, it is most important to make every possible effort to awaken the public opinion so as to create a strong public demand for reality-based assessment of the hazards of GE foods.
It is unacceptable that the same scientists are used as advisors to government and regulatory bodies in safety assessment questions as has been the case in Genetic Engineering. For more, see

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

BOYCOT!!!! GMO SUGAR!!!

You would be surprised how far a pissed off email or even a phone call will go to a major candy company, or any other food stuff company about this topic!! Let them know that you will not under any circumstance buy their product if they use GMO sugar!!! If the growers cant sell it they wont plant it!

(and for those of you who are in complete or partial ignorance of just how bad GMO food is... google it and wake up!!)

Is there a reason they shouldn't ...

go to market? As long as the seller is honest about what he is selling, and no fraud is committed, then anybody should be able to sell anything to any consenting adult. Period.

'Cause there's a monster on the loose

The problem

The biggest GMO problem that I see, aside from unknown side effects in humans that take years of consumption to appear, is the spread to wild environments. It's the equivalent of giving a biological warfare company free reign in a neighborhood. It's unfortunate that these things aren't more public, but this shit spreads and takes out natural crops and fields belonging to OTHER farmers. Mixing with genes is a really brutal business.

Eric Hoffer

go to market without a label?

I agree with you as long as everyone is honest in what we are purchasing but the real problem is they don't allow you to know what it is because it is not labeled GMO sugar beets, just sugar and they hid behind a FDA approval.

Suppose you go to the car lot to buy a car...

and they don't allow you to look under the hood, then you just don't buy that car. You go to the dealer who lets you look under the hood. Don't rely on the FDA or any other part of the nanny state to keep you safe, take that responsibility yourself. Surely you can find sugar that you know is not GMO....right?

'Cause there's a monster on the loose

Not always the case and you know it.

I realize the libertarian principle but in this case I would trust no one. Yes I can say the same with sugarcane. I am in the heart of that.

I also sold cars and yes I took advantage of people. Was a young man and I grew older I realize I was a piece of crap. Do I regret it? YES! That is why I proposed a seed saving / exchange program. I am still working on it and thankfully one person saw the benefit here at the DP.

If we don't take care of our own who will? If you eat the crap being sold in stores then no one can help you. If you condone the status quo with gardening, you are wrong. If you don't learn to grow your own then no one can help you. I, on the other hand, have an ulterior motive. I want to help people become self sufficient. What do you want? Everyone here on the DP no matter how small of an area can help. There are ZERO excuses.

I don't mean to be picking on you but being a used car salesman in the early 90's and knowing what I did caught a nerve. My friend I would like your help in this endeavor in however you can. GMO is not the way to go, Nor is leaving it up to people that haven't learned what they are eating. Education from us is what it will take.

Semper FI!
