Eve of Destruction UPDATED by Barry McGuire
I found the first video linked below today, as I was searching for the second video, respectively.

The first is a minor revision, where the second is a major rewrite, of a classic that almost didn't get recorded.
"The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version",...
"McGuire also mentioned that "Eve of Destruction" was recorded in one take on a Thursday morning (from words scrawled on a crumpled piece of paper), and he got a call from the record company at 7:00 the following Monday morning, telling him to turn on the radio - his song was playing. The recording includes an "ahhh" where McGuire couldn't read the words."

I thought it would be interesting to compare with Dr. Pauls' life experiences near the time this song was released in 1965. The major rewrite video didn't say if McGuire wrote or co-wrote the lyrics, but I find it fascinating to compare with our journey to where we are now.

"While still a medical resident in the 1960s, Paul was influenced by Friedrich Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom, which led him to read many works of Ayn Rand and Ludwig von Mises. He came to know economists Hans Sennholz and Murray Rothbard well, and credits to them his interest in the study of economics. He came to believe that what the Austrian school economists wrote was coming true on August 15, 1971, when President Richard Nixon closed the "gold window" by implementing the U.S. dollar's complete departure from the gold standard.[8] That same day, the young physician decided to enter politics, saying later, "After that day, all money would be political money rather than money of real value. I was astounded."[9]
Inspired by his belief that the monetary crisis of the 1970s was predicted by the Austrian School and caused by excessive government spending on the Vietnam War[10] and wholesale welfare,[11] Paul became a delegate to the Texas Republican convention and a Republican candidate for the United States Congress."

I just couldn't help thinking that this might fit the occasion, especially after all the Noah's Ark news and thread this week.

Nice reply but remember
we are also on the dawning of a prophetic, Kingdom Come Thy will be done, without the interference of human hands...Those whom He loves He chastens. It will soon be time to "look up", for your redemption draws near.

I was born in 42 my dad was in WW2, in Korea in the 50s.

We have never gotten around to "Give Peace A Chance".
67 years later and I still ask, "When Will We Ever Learn"?

In this newest version, (2nd above), Sloan rewrites his original protest classic to sows words of hope into the stern warning that " we're still on the eve of destruction".
It may seem contradictory, but the conclusion that, "there is nothing to stop it but a miracle of faith", isn't a fatalistic conclusion, but rather a realistic assessment of the power within and around all people of good will and humble dependence on the help of Providence to meet seemingly overwhelming odds.
Barry belts this out even better than he did in the original 45 years ago. I took time to transcribe the closing lyrics that he sings with a chorus of childrens' voices, backing up these words of hope for our present and their future:
"At the source of silence will sing song of creation, transcending the bounderies of our souls' imagination.
You can't twist the Truth, it knows no regulation, 'cause the Truth is in love, freedom, and cooperation.
Let there be peace in your heart, (that's alright, that's where it starts), and there'll be peace tonight in all the nation, for the music of life is in our laughter and liberation, ... and you tell me, over and over and over again my friend, you don't believe, we're still on the eve of destruction, no, no, naw, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction."

Trying to research the newest version...
I found this note about it:
New video for Barry McGuire on You Tube! Eve 2012 (Eve of Destruction)
New lyrics by Phil Sloan.
One voice can change the world - As Barry says, “We’re on the Titanic, and the ship is sinking, the folks on the lower decks are up to their knees in water and the people on the upper decks are partying.

The newest version
seems a bit socialist to me.
Individual change impacting society,
not social collectivism, is given as the solution and reason for hope.

BRAVO!
Outstanding it would be good to show the connecting between the International Banksters who Finance the wars and the Offensive Industrial Complex who make money and the corrupt Politicians who are OWNED by the the Corporations and the Banksters. The PAWNS who fight the damn senseless wars. If the soldiers and the people KNEW how they are being played as FOOLS I wonder if they would NOT FIGHT but who knows. I am at a loss as to why the soldiers are willing to die for a buck. That crap about freedom is a myth.

Barry Mc Guire had a clue....
Surprisingly enough, many of the Christian artists back then did. I was surprised to recall one or two others who mentioned both wars and abortion, as a rebuke to both the left and right wing of politics. (Scott Wesley Brown came to mind first- This Little Child mentions both 'debating over disarmament' and 'killing children before they are born' as an affront to the "little child " that was born in Bethlehem, Jesus).
But that man should play the tyrant over God, and find Him a better man than himself, is astonishing drama indeed!~~D. Sayers

Good comment on YouTube,

No doubt you've seen this video before
but for those who haven't, here is the "more info" notes that go with it:
"War is a Racket by Smedley Butler is a famous speech denouncing the military industrial complex. This anti-war speech by two-time Congressional Medal of Honor recipient exposes war profits that benefit few at the expense of many. Throughout his distinguished career in the Marines, Smedley Darlington Butler demonstrated that true patriotism does not mean blind allegiance to government policies with which one does not agree. To Hell with war."

This would be good to have it's
own thread. It is a very timely and a good reminder for us all.

I'm working on it
Here's an old reel new film that shows the level of respect Butler had in his day.

I can't think of anyone in our military history who ever held such a broad and highly respected sphere of influence, before or since Major General Smedley Butler.
Who could better sum up what war is all about?
BTW Here's the book Butler wrote, that the video portrays:

in the words of Van Morrison
"take me back, way, way, back" That was cool, one of my favorite songs back then. I used to know every word by heart. How sad, nothings changed, only got worse. I wonder how much longer this can all go on. Born in 49 and there's always been a war my entire 60 years of living.

I like the major revision version best
There is a tone of hope that only transcendent faith can give, when the stark reality is that there seems to be little chance for our future without our alignment with divine intervention.
Here's another song Barry did decades later, that captures that perspective best:

I chose "War" for this forum subject
because we're only on the eve of it becoming a "Current Events" subject.
