Fluoride level to be halved in bottled water

The limit on fluoride in bottled water will soon be cut to less than 0.7 milligram per litre from the current 1.5mg standard to prevent bone abnormality and teeth discolouring especially in children.

Pipat Yingseri, secretary-general of the Food and Drug Administration, said water with more than 1.5mg of fluoride per litre doubled the risk of discoloured teeth among three-year-olds, compared to 0.7mg.

The World Health Organisation warned that drinking water with more than 4mg of fluoride per litre for a long time could cause bone abnormality, joint pain and disability.

Military officials said Wednesday they hope to restore clean drinking water to Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson soon.

But as of Wednesday evening they were warning anyone who lives, works on or visits the two posts in Anchorage not to drink the water due to excess fluoride in the supply.

The water also should not be used to brush teeth and wash or cook food. Any ice cubes made since Tuesday should be thrown out, according to the Fort Richardson Water Treatment Plant. The fluoride cannot be boiled out of the water, according to Fort Richardson medical staff.

The fluoride problem was discovered at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at the plant but it is possible that it began as early as Tuesday afternoon, said Bob Zacharski, site manager for Doyon Utilities, a Native corporation subsidiary that runs the Fort Richardson plant, which supplies water to Fort Richardson and Elmendorf.

He and Fort Richardson officials said the fluoride levels in the utility's drinking water are tested daily at noon and were safe as of Tuesday's test.

Early Wednesday, a plant worker adding fluoride to a device that injects it into the water grew suspicious that the system had malfunctioned and was demanding too much fluoride.

Some testing by the utility showed that its water contained more than double the amount of fluoride considered safe for drinking. The safety threshold for fluoride in water is 4 parts per million but the utility's water contained as much as 11 parts per million, he said.

But fluoride levels have to be monitored carefully because chronic ingestion of fluoride is a proven cause of tooth enamel damage in children.

How can we afford to spend money on one more poison for drinking water?

"Fluoride" is actually a toxic waste taken from the scrubbers in smoke stacks of industry and phosphate fertilizer companies. It contains five chemicals, none of which are wholesome for living creatures. It is too toxic for ocean dumping and certainly bad for disposal in our bayous.

The fluoride fraud has gone on for 60 years because of propaganda and profit.

The American Dental Association initially supported fluoridation but issued a caution in November 2006 advising its members and, in particular, parents not to use water with fluoride in preparing infant formula. We can easily check a fluoridated toothpaste tube to see it should be kept away from children and "If too much is swallowed accidentally, report to a physician immediately or go to a Poison Control Center."

Those with Internet access can locate the acclaimed declaration of Dr. Bill Osmunson on the dangers of fluoride. He quotes Dr. E.H. Bronner, a nephew of Albert Einstein, who leaves no doubt about the danger of consuming fluoride. "As a research chemist of established standing, I built within the past 22 years, three commercial chemical plants and licensed six of my 53 patents. Based on my years of practical experience in the health-food and chemical fields, let me warn: Fluoridation of drinking water is criminal insanity (emphasis is his), sure national suicide. Don't do it "» even in small quantities. Sodium Fluoride is a deadly poison."

Fluoride lobbyist Randy Hayden testified positively, "Baton Rouge is one of the largest cities in the country that does not add fluoride to its public water supply."

We should thank all capital city leaders for such a healthy example and hope the rest of the nation will follow soon.

DHB fluoride ad complaint laid with advertising watchdog

Local campaigners wanting to keep fluoride out of Far North water supplies have lodged complaints about five of the Northland DHB’s fluoridation advertisements.

“The DHB has spent thousands of taxpayer dollars to tell us we should have toxic waste in our water” says complainant Cliff Royal. “These ads are false and misleading in the most blatant ways” he says.

“Not only did the DHB’s sham trial show no benefit from fluoridation, the Ministry of Health’s national figures show the same” he points out, adding with concern “But what’s worse is the mountain of evidence fluoridation is a significant health threat; not at all safe as the DHB ads claim. That mountain contributes to the 18 pages of documentation in my complaint.”

Lib Dem, Tory and Green candidates for the parliamentary seats in Southampton have said they opposed plans to add fluoride to the city's tap water.

The South Central Strategic Health Authority (SHA) agreed the plans in February 2009.

The decision was made despite 72% of 10,000 respondents in a public consultation opposing the move.

The plan is the subject of a judicial review after a private legal challenge. Labour has not commented.

Resident Geraldine Milner has mounted the legal challenge against the decision by the SHA.

The judicial review will be based on government policy, which states most residents need to be in favour of the move.

Campaign group Hampshire Against Fluoridation and other supporters delivered a petition with 14,000 signatures to Downing Street on 9 June last year.

Councillors have also called on the SHA to hold a referendum, but the authority said it "has no mechanism" to do so.

The health authority argued that mass fluoridation was a "safe way" of tackling tooth decay and said it was confident the decision was "in the best interests of the health of local people".

'Deeply unethical'

John Spottiswoode said he was standing as Green Party candidate for Southampton Itchen in an attempt "to remove MPs and councillors who support water fluoridation".

He said: "Seventy-two per cent rejected water fluoridation in the public consultation.

"It is also deeply unethical to force people to drink a known toxin via their water supply, especially if it is being used to medicate people against their will."

Chris Bluemel, also from the Green Party, said: "A judicial review into the policy is currently pending in the High Court, and I await the outcome of this with interest. Regardless of the outcome, I will remain opposed, and will continue to call on the Strategic Health Authority to reconsider its position."

Royston Smith, Conservative candidate for the Southampton Itchen constituency, said: "I wouldn't argue with the science but I don't believe people should have a medical product put into their water supply unless and until they have been fully consulted and have had their chance - through a referendum if necessary - to endorse or otherwise the decision."

And Caroline Nokes, Conservative candidate for Romsey and Southampton North, said: "The fact that the SHA decided to ignore the vast majority of views expressed in the consultation, did not even bother to consult some of those residents who will be affected, and is certainly not accountable to any elected body speaks volumes.

"The consultation process was a sham.

"I fully support the judicial review process, believe there should be a referendum on this matter and the results of that should be binding."
