Dead In The Water (BBC Four, 9.00pm, Monday 10 June) tells a gripping and chilling story, with new access to crewmen, senior American figures including former US Defence Secretary Robert McNamara and CIA chief Richard Helms, and officers in the US and Israeli intelligence services, who give their version of events for the first time.
In fact, as Dead In The Water reveals, those at the very top never believed the Israeli version - and for good reasons.
The picture that emerges is of a daring ploy by Israel to fake an Egyptian attack on the American spy ship, and thereby provide America with a reason to officially enter the war against Egypt.
Intercepts recorded during the incident reveal how America was convinced the attack was intentional, and the minutes of a White House meeting clearly suggest that President Johnson believed the attack had been deliberate.
For 35 years, the Liberty survivors have continued to argue that the attack was intentional and that the US government colluded in a cover-up.
Today, the veterans are still calling for a full investigation by Congress into the incident. It remains the only case of an attack on a US ship without a full Congressional enquiry.
Dead in the Water puts forward evidence that Israel deliberately attacked a ship belonging to its ally, intending to sink it as quickly as possible.
The film also reveals how the Liberty incident provoked the launch of nuclear-armed planes targeted against Cairo from a US aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.
They were recalled only just in time, when it was clear the Liberty had not sunk with all hands, and that Israel was responsible.

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 as full payment to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 in compensation to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the U.S. claim of $7,644,146 for material damage to the Liberty itself.[4]

Their war crimes may have part of the reason for the attack. However, I believe the main objective was to draw America into a war with Egypt.
Why else would Johnson/McNamara order American jets armed with nuclear weapons to attack Egypt then recall them when they found out the justification for that attack had not been sunk? And that the Liberty had managed to get off a message to other US ships.
Btw, it was an excellent video. And after all these years I think it's a shame the US Navy sailors of the Liberty have not received the recognition and justice they so rightly deserve.
What a slap in the face to the men of the Liberty for our present day reps and senators to sign a letter in support of that country and yet not one congressional investigation since it happened in 1967. It will be 43 years on June 8th of this year.
Is there any doubt where those elected officials loyalties lie?

War College professor says US vets orgs are key to 911 truth
Sabrosky interviews with a survivor of the Liberty at below link. He is former Director of Studies and Adjunct Professor at the U.S. Army War College, who has stepped forward to state unequivocally that the Israeli Mossad played a central role in 911, along with co-conspirators in the American government.
The military in this country is not "bought-out," Dr. Sabrosky says, but it rarely uses or even knows the power it has to force Congress into action. Sabrosky says local VFW posts and other organizations are the key, not the national VFW/ American Legion leadership.
"The real 800 pound gorilla in the US lobbying systems is the veterans groups...The great fear of AIPAC is that someone will tap into the veterans organizations, because this is the one lobby which can make them history,"
Sabrosky urges local veterans groups to call for a new 911 investigation and to announce these through local news media.

The strange love affair of the U.S. and AIPAC

Imagine you are a representative of the highest government agencies. You encounter a group that places a foreign power above your own government’s interests and redirects and undermines your policies. Would you go to their convention, popularize them, obsequiously placate them and demonstrate you mean no harm to their sinister behavior?
Sounds incomprehensible?
United States State Department officials and congressional leaders have been doing the incomprehensible for years. U.S. State Department officials, senators and House representatives have regularly attended the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) conventions. Although the executive branch signaled a hardening of relations with Israel, its officials spoke to and listened to AIPAC during the week that inaugurated the spring of 2010.
Why and for what reason do government officials cater to AIPAC? Don’t they know AIPAC’s inglorious history and its one-sided purpose? Actually, government officials have many reasons to distance themselves from AIPAC and no reasons to associate themselves with an organization whose thrust depends upon spurious reasoning and outrageous statements.
The Dwight Eisenhower and Jack Kennedy administrations and the 1964 Fulbright Investigation Committee tried to declare groups representing Israel’s interests to be foreign agents. Deceptive maneuvers, ambiguous and modified election laws dragged charges through the courts and temporarily resolved the issue in favor of AIPAC. Nevertheless, government officials should realize there is meaning and significance to the charges and any support for an accused agency undermines reputable administrations.
Then we have the perception of an organization using its resources to engineer defeats of popular congressional leaders based upon an issue that usually doesn’t concern the American electorate: foreign policy. Four of the Senate’s more popular leaders, Charles Percy from Illinois, James Abourek from South Dakota, Adlai Stevenson III from Illinois and J. William Fulbright from Arkansas were defeated when PAC funds poured in to assist their opponents, simply because AIPAC categorized the incumbent senators’ supports for Israel as insufficient. Add Representatives Paul McCloskey (1982), Paul Findley (1983), Earl Hilliard (2002), and Cynthia McKinney (2006) to those who ran afoul of AIPAC, and by coincidence, suffered defeat.
Is AIPAC a strong factor in determining elections? This is more likely true when the candidate is already in a weak position. Nevertheless, why do the national political parties approve their candidates’ attachments to the Israel friendly PACs? Isn’t the electorate more concerned with domestic issues than with foreign nations, and doesn’t it abhor PACs? Nevertheless, the political parties reinforce an organization which skews voter intentions and masks the principal issues. Something is wrong with the voters’ inability to recognize and react to candidates who benefit from accepting funds from a PAC whose only mission is to assist a foreign nation. And why does the State Department bother with AIPAC? Its officials are not elected and AIPAC is a hindrance to its mission. Strange!

These sailors were just kids 19-20 years old they could been
your sons. Apparently, no one has taken the time to watch these videos, because if you had you would surely want to comment.
The BBC has done great job. These videos are excellent and the account of events come from the sailors who were on the Liberty when she was attacked. It's quite riveting to hear them tell what happened.
America came within a hair's breath of launching a nuclear
strike on Egypt in retaliation for the sinking of the USS Liberty. There was only one problem the Liberty was still afloat.
Can you imagine what Russia would have done if an unprovoked nuclear attack was carried out by the US on Egypt?
