2 booked in anti-measles vaccination deaths case

Damoh, MP, Mar 15 : A health supervisor was today sent to jail in connection with the death of four children who developed complications after being administered anti-measles vaccine.

Saraswati Nayar was today presented before a local court.

She was booked in a case relating to unintentional murder.

Health worker Durga Tiwari was sent to jail yesterday on the same charge.

Both had been suspended along with district vaccination officer Anupam Kulshreshtha in connection with the case.

Eleven children had developed complications after being administered anti-measles vaccine at anganwadi centre numbers 6, 8 and 9 on March 12. Four of the children died in the past two days.

Six children are still undergoing treatment in District Hospital.

Congress demands discussion

Bhopal, Mar 18 : The issue of four children dying after being administered with measals vaccine in the Damoh district headquarters came up for discussion in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly today.

Raising the issue during the zero hour, Dr Kalpana Parulekar (Congress) gave an adjourment proposal while demanding an immediate discussion on the issue.

She alleged that the four children had died due to negligence of the State Health Department.

Speaker Ishwardas Rohani said that the issue should be taken seriously and offered permission for acceting a calling attention notice regarding the matter tomorrow.

Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi (Congress) said that the issue was an example of the failure of National Immunisation Programme and an immediate discussion must be held on the issue.

''This was an issue of public attention and the admisibility of the same in the adjourment proposal must also be discussed,'' he added.
