Does anyone else find it ironic that a Libertarian/Constitutionalist forum has moderators?

Twice now important threads have been deleted because someone's sensitivity has been hurt- this is really a bad thing for this forum, as many people come here as a last resort of free speech.

This is a good forum, but if we are true believers in freedom we shouldn't be deleting the last line of defense we have- our communication words and threads. Let us not forget, the pen is mightier than the sword, but only if you allow it to write.

Owner's response, by Michael Nystrom

As the owner of this site, and the owner of sites before it, I have close to 10 years in moderating online boards.

Do I find it ironic? No I don't. Moderation is necessary in order to keep some semblance of order. If you'd like an unmoderated forum, please check out the Ron Paul War Room: www.ronpaulwarroom.com, where you will find posts such as this:

kultura i sztuka

By mori_gda | January 28, 2010

wpadłem na idee zrobienia bloga o tematyce KULTURA i SZTUKA w szeroko pojętym znaczeniu tych słów. obserwując nasze społeczeństwo widać wyrażnie spadek zainteresowania sztuką. dlatego ((musimy, powinniśmy)) wyjść z nią do ludzi. proponuje aby wszyscy Ci którym leży na sercu dobro społeczeństwa publikowali ciekawe arytkuły i informacje o kulturze i sztuce.

Complete with links to spam sites. Unless you want this board flooded with posts like that, moderation is necessary.

Part of Constitutionality is that an owner has the right to protect, and do what he wishes with his private property. This is my private property, and I run it as I see fit.

If you disagree with this, you are free to start your own. This is the beauty of freedom.

No, I don't

Michael has the same right as proprietor that I would want on a site like this if I had it.

You who want a socialistic approach to private property definitely do not qualify as libertarian.

Get your own site.

No. Michael Nystrom is right.

You must be one of those subversive Glenn Beck / Carlson Tucker libertarians who actually "smokes the dope" and "pays the prostitutes" in an effort to delude and to undermine us small "l" Republicans.

The mods on this site are very open. They are very wise to those who seek to undermine the truth merely to promote their own corporate special interest masters.

Keep up the good work Michael / mods! You've got the covert crowd whimpering for access.

Does anyone else find it ironic that a Libertarian forum

finds it unreasonable that some poster wants free reign and control over what he doesn't own? Now, what's that called?

Brilliant!

its always the case isn't it...when you use the philosophy of freedom and find the steps to the truth...err rather..ya, what the heck, I see no reason to let that word be co-opted.

Then it was Bill O'Reilly as the model for fair and balanced discussion. In either event we wouldn't need to resort to red herrings pretending this debate is about house keeping ( a legitimate need no one disputes). We should never be content to bring anything but the best to the table.

If efficiency was our overriding value, I would simply cry:

That would be expedient ... ; but what about crowding the theatre? ... you might ask. Realizing there is time enough for elaboration, I attempt explanation:

I am a moderator here and I do it because I enjoy it - not 100% of the time tho - but most of the time - say 99%.

We all know that the good doctor is a Libertarian and a Constitutionalist. People who come here do it for different reasons. There are the regulars and the newbies. On any given day we have hundreds of guests. The number of guests ALWAYS outnumbers the regulars.

I think it's important to make that distinction. It helps me to keep in mind that every day new people are coming here to check out the site because they have learned about Dr. Paul and want to know more about him. It's the 'first impression' syndrome. It matters.

Some topics just don't cut it because they are just NOT relevant to what this site is about. Dr. Paul's philosophy of "freedom" encompasses everything under the sun - so where do we draw the line? Well, I say look at it from a newbies perspective.

This forum is not a free for all. It's got the good doctor's name on it. And anyone who does follow Dr. Paul knows the honorable way that he conducts himself and how he deals with opposition to and criticism of his philosophies.

And equally important is Michael's philosophy of how he wants HIS site presented and the guidelines he has established to maintain order out of chaos. It is not a free for all. People need to respect that. Whether or not they agree is irrelevant. We are all here because of Michael and this wondrous site that he has created. All he asks is that you follow the guidelines.

So, I look at it with 2 considerations:
How do I think Dr. Paul would feel when he comes to the site and sees the threads posted and the - sometimes never ending - discussions which follow?
Do the thread topics follow the DP guidelines?

As Michael has said - more than once - this site cannot be everything to everyone.

Sunny

I've noticed a distinct lack of threads with references to the month before October and the day after the 10th lately. The threads really seem to have far more positive and or non-counterproductive subjects.
Just wondering if there's been a change in users or is it something being managed by the site?

Hi rusty buick

Oh, go ahead and say it! It's ok- lol!

Seriously, when threads of that topic are brought up I think we all give it some time and see if it gets out of hand and endless, as those kind of threads tend to do - before we make a move. Or - as Michael has suggested - tone down the title some to make it less inflammatory.

I've noticed it too. There was one that was specifically deleted because it really 'was' a troll stirring up trouble - that and I guess a friend of his doing the same. It had alot of links to 'off base' websites. We did a little research on the ISP.

Overall, it looks like there has been less posting on this topic lately - maybe because of that. Whatever the reason the count is lower now - at least for now.

I know there were some people posting questions about why certain threads had disappeared. I wish people would just read the guidelines once in a while. It would help.

Thanks for the feedback. It is much appreciated!

' Where the ragged people go '

http://www.dailypaul.com/node/74403

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles ... such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie la lie ...
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Lie la lie ...
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Bleeding me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains
Lie la lie ...

How would you go about destroying an opposition site?

You could start flame wars by insulting other posters, you could post things contrary to the philosophy of the site, you could post things irrelevant to the site, you could post gibberish or use lots of misspelled words, incorrect usage, and lousy grammar while advocating for the philosophy of the site. You could register under multiple names and start your own flame wars, calling yourself all sorts of despicable names. You could create lots of spam posts for real or fictitious products: viagra, sex toys, knockoff watches, cameras and electronics.

Get creative. Use your imagination. Then ask yourself if anyone would have any reason to do that to the Daily Paul.

but the irony is,

for all the commotion over what you should do with your property,

no one proposes to dictate to you or insist we put up for a vote what you MIGHT do.

That MIGHT make this a political forum,

not one seeking to demonstrably promote RIGHT understanding of libertarian principles.

Ultimately, it isn't, in my opinion, a question of property RIGHT ( or any thing else libertarians/constitutionalists/or owners SHOULD regard as sacrosanct );

... at the risk of uttering sacrilege, I submit ( Heaven forbid ) it is not a question coextensive to Ron Paul, either --

No,

EVERY forum needs moderators, because some people simply don't know how to behave. Libertarianism is about small, decentralized government, NOT no government at all.

Reality is....

people like us have some very powerful enemies, some of which are better fought without speaking their names. That is just the way it is. If these enemies are to be destroyed it is in a silent manner and utilizing every manner of deception so that when we wage war against them it does not appear on the surface that we are.....

I would work to leave the owner free to to do his will.

I must admit to intense feelings of curiosity about "page access denied" messages.

Moderators have an important role, that of keeping the conversation on track. In the broadest sense, this means to me: battling fallacies especially attacks against the man or his associations, battling misinformation and unsubstantiated claims all the while promoting restoration of a Constitutional Republic. At least that is what I have come to expect here at the DP.

Here is our Achilles heel. The attack machinery fueled by political favors and money competes with honest investigations into the motives and suitability of a candidates. The Rand Paul and the Colorado affair come to mind.

Today the divide between the liberty minded and those those bought and sold for FRN's is pretty clear. What about tomorrow? How do we build a media or forum capable of open and honest debate?

Free includes debt-free!

That's not irony

That's not irony.

A Constitutionalist

is very much about rules, so it's not ironic. Libertarian doesn't mean do whatever you want, it means adhere to principles that protect and promote individual Liberty. Liberty grew from a prosperous (European) merchant class (Road to Serfdom), and it's preservation and health is dependent on private property, free markets, and sound money, all of which, like this forum, need moderation, clear guidelines and good judgement.

Ron Paul and von Hayek represent a very well defined and specific philosophy. It's not hippie liberty, or loonitarianism, but Capitalism. In my opinion, this private site and its tolerant moderator (who is free to do what he wants with his property) excellently embodies these views, and has been a catalyst to the grassfire that is fueling a rebirth of America's founding principles. Generally, the discussions here are civil, the contributions are thoughtful, the topics are wide ranging, and a lot of money has been raised for candidates. These are no small measures of success.

Your question betrays a misunderstanding about what makes Liberty possible. Be of good cheer! All kinds of different and good visitors here can enlighten you. How cool is that?

Moderation

does not surprise me, but when moderation obstructs truth that is unnecessary moderation and calling it disappointing is an colossal understatement.

Is that whats going on here, I am withholding judgement for a while longer. I have been here a long time. Almost as long as DP has been active I think. But If i do come to that conclusion I may very well be done here.
