between "police state" and "justified force."
If a crowd is destroying property or committing violence against persons, then we should welcome police intervention, especially using non-lethal crowd control means. Consider the difference in behavior between Tea Party and G-20 protest crowds.

But did it apply in Pittsburgh? I watched a few hours of various film clips of the G20 and I did not see violence being initiated by the protesters. The sources of the videos ranged from participants to news organizations. What it showed was aggressive and sometimes violent police tactics. Remember "bicycle girl?" Remember the story of a student beaten and arrested by police for the crime of helping non-protesting students get back into their dorm by holding a locked door open?
Remember the sound weapons?
Maybe everything I saw was one-sided. But where is the evidence of widespread protester violence? The smashed windows were the work of one or two people who were promptly arrested. There is credible evidence from other G20 protests (not Pitt in particular, Denver?, I forget)that the police seeded the crowd with their own people in hopes of provoking an incident, and when the police agents were outed by the crowd, they and they alone were allowed to exit through the police lines.
I get your point, and we agree that the police should be welcomed to protect life and property. I'm just not so sure, anymore, that we can be confident that is what they are really doing in all cases.

I did not specify Pittsburgh. You're right about agents provocateur being used. I suspect they may have been used at this weekend's Tea Party too (report of "nigger!" and "faggot!" taunts).

Check out the CNN video below at 1:18-1:45 carefully and see if you don't notice a certain uniformity of black clothing and hood-cover by all but one of those rolling the smoking dumpster toward the police. The immediate response was to fire tear-gas at the peaceful crowd after the provocateurs pressed the threshold to "justify" engagement.
