Towne agreed with Millan that he appeals to voters on both ends of the political spectrum, because his platform includes slashing government spending, which appeals to conservatives, and pulling troops from foreign countries, which appeals to liberals.

"I mean, it goes back to what exactly do you define as a tea party member and an independent and a lot of tea party folks are just dissatisfied with the two parties and the status quo," said Towne, who does not see himself as a spoiler.

Lehigh Valley 9/12 Tea Party leader Kim Schmidtner said Towne has plenty of fans in the local tea party movement, mostly because the group's priority is reining in taxes and government spending, and limiting the power of the federal government to levels laid out in the Constitution, all positions Towne shares.

What makes the poll hard to gauge is that there is no "tea party" political party, she said. Besides being interested in reducing federal spending, group members have a diverse views on a range of other public policy issues.
