DIGG! Alternet: Author Naomi Wolf on How Tea Parties Help Fight Fascism!

!! D I G G - I T !!

By Justine Sharrock, Alternet | Posted on March 30, 2010

Naomi Wolf, author of The End of America, talks about why she has become an improbable Tea Party darling, and if progressives can learn from the conservative activists.

In her bestselling The End of America, Naomi Wolf outlines the 10 warning signs that America is headed toward a fascist takeover. Using historical precedents, she explains how our government is mimicking those of Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin through practices like surveillance of ordinary citizens, restricting the press, developing paramilitary forces and arbitrarily detaining people.

The book was lauded by liberals under Bush: the Independent Publishers gave it the Freedom Fighter Award; the Nation named it the best political book of 2007. Now, under President Obama, Wolf's book is providing ammunition for the Tea Partiers, Patriots, Ron Paul supporters and Oath Keepers, who also warn of impending tyrannical government. Even when the book first came out pre-Obama, Alex Jones, Michael Savage and Fox News invited her on their shows, and agreed with her.

It’s not just her message. She speaks their language, referring to the Founding Fathers and American Revolution as models, admitting to a profound sense of fear, warning of tyranny, fascism, Nazism and martial law. When Glenn Beck warns of these things we laugh. When Wolf draws those same connections, we listen. How can both sides be speaking the same language, yet see things so differently? Or are we just not listening to each other? I telephoned Wolf to ask her what it means when your book ends up bolstering policies you oppose.

Naomi Wolf gets it

I just listened to a 47' podcast of Naomi Wolf on Rob Kall's program (progressive) and she turned him around regarding what the Ron Paul Teapartiers really stand for. She also is a progressive Democrat but she understands that liberty trumps everything and that there is serious common ground with Tea Partiers. She suggests various strategies for progressives and Tea Partiers to work together. She called it transpartisanship.
If you have the time, it is worth a listen. You have to log-in or sign-up (free) to listen. If you sign up you will get a daily plethora of opinions and news articles, mostly progressive yuck, but a lot of good Libertarian stuff. Paul Craig Roberts and Gerald Celente articles are frequent.

The DP is proof that the grassroots support for Ron Paul and his peaceful message of individual liberty is large, real, and not going away!

I read during the campaign she was having nightmares that Obama would lose. Maybe she is coming around.

I like Naomi Wolf

I think she is a good example of a "lefty" who get's @ what really matters & can be included in the Ron Paul movement. We can learn some things from here & vis-versa.

Combing the two sides is our only chance for significant change

Bump for a great read!!

last sentence: "From a constitutional point of view Bush passing through the Patriot Act is no worse than Obama renewing it."

She's Good.

I saw Naomi Wolf speak at the Revolution March on July 12 a couple years ago, and I definitely liked what she had to say. haha and she is pretty sexy too. While I definitely don't like everything she says, I believe her heart is in the right place... she seriously needs to check out some Austrian Economics though.

I'm on the fence... kinda like she is. But I Dugg it. For the newbies.

just so you know... (again)

I may not always agree with her, but I've got to love her anyway

In this article, Justine Sharrock is as interesting to observe giving the interview, as hearing Naomi Wolf's candid answers.

Here's a few examples of what I'm talking about:

"I was invited by the Ron Paul supporters to their rally in Washington last summer and I loved it. I met a lot of people I respected, a lot of “ordinary” people, as in not privileged. They were stepping up to the plate, when my own liberal privileged fellow demographic habituates were lying around whining. It was a wake-up call to the libertarians that there’s a progressive who cares so much about the same issues. Their views of liberals are just as distorted as ours are of conservatives.

JS: Why do you think the sides don’t understand each other?

NW: Frankly, liberals are out of the habit of communicating with anyone outside their own in cohort. We have a cultural problem with self-righteousness and elitism."

Another great insight along the same lines:

"JS: How do you feel about your books bolstering a fight for policies you don’t agree with?

NW: If people are taking my book seriously and organizing, getting into office, caring about the constitution, and not waiting for someone else to lead them, I think, God bless them. All of us should be doing that. The left should be doing that. There is always the risk in advocating for democracy that the first people to wake up might not be your team, but that is a risk worth taking. I would rather have citizens I don’t agree with organized and active than an oligarchy of people that I agree with."

Naomi's last sentence does sound a bit confusing though. I can't think of an oligarchy of any kind, that I could agree with.

I find it funny she comes out

I find it funny she comes out a writes how bad stalin, hitler and mussolini were.. then the dope votes for one.. How can she write these types of books then turn and vote for obombya? just doesn't make any sense.

How did she stab us in the back?

Can't remember

She endorsed Obama

But she clearly has learned her lesson.

she will endorse a democrat every time at least in my opinion. I mean Obama to the casual observer may have looked better than bush, but to anyone not delusional and knows the game?

I like ms. wolf, but she would never endorse anybody that wasn't a welfare state lover. I don't think you can have one or the other. Totalitarian is totalitarian. Welfare is warfare, its all command and control...meaning we always get poorer and less free.

We need more cow bells

oh, I mean more diggs. LOL

i have her book. It's very well done and should be given to family and friends.

I cant in good conscience trust Ms Wolfe

I think we should support her when she says such good things but we should treat her with care and distrust. Ill never forget how she stabbed us in the back in 08

Some of the comments after the article are good, but some still have the notion that everyone that objects to the government's crimes is a racist and misogynist. There are many that ask where was the outrage during the Bush admin - that is a good question which some of us can answer but I would ask in return, where has the outrage for the war disappeared to?

Also, one interesting point discussed over there regards an educated elitist left looking down on a less educated, working class discontent masses. Perhaps patriots accused of racism need to turn the tables and point out the stereotyping and bias stem from a privileged elite who aren't clued into the suffering and troubles experienced by the middle class and working poor.

Can't we do outreach? Aren't there any Ds among us who can start a Constitutional group to appeal to the left and minorities? If we could discuss common ground then we could atleast join together on the issues we agree on like the war and anti-corruption, anti-wall street bailouts, transparency, etc.

bumping. . .

for relevance.

*I* find Wolf respectable and Beck laughable; that is the difference.

Wolf is somewhat of a 'scholar'; Beck is an entertainer. To *me* that is the difference.

When I see her name, I read. And I'm not a 'progressive'. I think she wants the truth.

She's taken quite a journey to get it, but I think she is after it.

I've been wondering what she's been up to lately

"Since I wrote Give Me Liberty, I have had a new audience that looks different than the average Smith girl. There is a giant libertarian component. I have had a lot of dialogue with the Ron Paul community."

I have had some concerns as to how she would effectively carry her Liberty vs. tyranny message into this administration. The few interviews she did with AJ post-election didn't have much punch because a record of Soetoro/aka B.H.Obama's actions hadn't been made yet.

Unfortunately, Wolf has plenty to go after now.

No Left or Right, but Up or Down

If this liberty movement is going to be sucessful, it MUST reach out to the so-called "left". John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were BOTH needed for the American revolution -- and they were friends (when they weren't enemies).

A while ago there was a posting for a book exchange between the Daily Paul and a left-leading news community. Whatever happened with that? Seemed like a great idea to me.

Important indeed...

Just offered a gentle paragraph that took a while to get out and it was flagged as having inappropriate content. No idea what is up with that so will just use this as a bump for a very important subject/post. I did use all caps once to emphasize one word. Don't dare to write anything else for now. :-)

Love it! She calls Bush fascism & Obama fascism on the carpet!
