Wikileaks: Collateral Murder - Classified US Military Video Shows Indiscriminate Slaying of Dozens, Incl. Two Reuters Employees

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff.

http://collateralmurder.com/

Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

A friend of mine was in this unit

He is an IVAW guy who will be on DemocracyNow talking about this incident either today or tomorrow. I'll be sure to post it as soon as it comes available. He sent me an e-mail after I forwarded this video to everyone I know. He said, "OMG that's my unit!", and now he's getting calls from the news media. This story will reinvigorate those in the movement and encourage people to get back into the fight.

any educated guestimates here?

there is a lag time from trigger to target; anyone here familiar with judging distance?
(like when counting 'mississippis or one thousands' between thunder & lightening)

If your look at the bottom

If your look at the bottom right of the screen you'll see 4 numbers that change as the Apache moves. This is the distance from the Apache to what the target reticule is pointing at in meters. I think it averages around 1330 meters throughout the video which is over a mile. If you want the exact measurement you can do the math.

EDIT: never mind those are depicting mils (more commonly used for calling in artillery than direction

I still bet that they were shooting at more than a mile though

I would guess (without watching the video again)

about 1/2 mile away.

There are 5280 feet in one mile and the M230 has a 2641 feet per second muzzle velocity.

This doesn't account for wind, humidity, air temp, ammunition temp, etc.

Quite Right

might be slightly closer considering the elevation drop.

seems about 1.5 seconds..

went back and counted (out loud), maybe later i will put a real stopwatch to it, see what i get.

any guestimates on range/distance of an AKG or RPG?

will they go six blocks?

RPG 7 is accurate to about

RPG 7 is accurate to about 300-400 meters but of course the projectile can go way farther than that. The AK is about the same in regards to accuracy but the bullet can travel much further and still kill you of course.

The RPG

is classified as a antitank weapon. But in reality with modern tanks as hardened as they are it is more like a anti-light armored vehicle weapon. It has that range but is extremely inaccurate. There is no guidance, it is in fact what the acronym stands for, rocket propelled grenade.

Were the Apache's threatened by the RPG? I don't think so but ground troops nearby would be if the armed men were setting up an ambush.

Well first of all the acronym doesn't stand for rocket propelled

grenade at all...

And second it wasn't the apache that was in danger. It was the humvee a block away that the dude had leaned out to take a picture of. Humvees are very vulnerable to rpgs.

CHA-CHING!

wolfe's picture

Yes, as a matter of fact...

RPG does mean Rocket Propelled Grenade. A quick web search will prove that, in case you are militarily challenged.

Second, from your clear expertise on the situation, it sounds like you are someone we should listen to when it comes to what is vulnerable to what kind of attack... roflmao...

Btw, what do YOU think RPG stands for?

The Philosophy Of Liberty -
http://www.thephilosophyofliberty.com/

Has it ever occured to you that it's a Russian weapon?

And the name would probably not be in English?

Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot
Hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher

But really that's just me being pedantic and the name (or wrong but popular transliteration of it) has no real bearing on this discussion (I have to get the intellectual high ground somehow, don't I?)

So yes, Humvees are very vulnerable to RPG's. Something you probably agreed with but decided to suggest was untrue to make me appear *more* foolish.

So we're back to square one.

CHA-CHING!

wolfe's picture

No, actually...

I just think you are leftist statist that rarely understands what he is talking about while still trying to maintain an air of expertise in everything and I enjoy pointing that out.

Regardless of origin, that is it's effective meaning in both languages. And in English, that is exactly what it stands for.

As far as what is and is not vulnerable, your claim is just 100% false as far as potential motive. The call in to get permission to fire was responded with a statement that permission to fire was granted because no friendlies were in the area. Without friendlies, there could not have been a battle. In addition, not even a remote threat was levied against the offending helicopter.

Have a look at these pictures:

You can even ignore the text at the top. But look at the pictures. Especially the last two. And tell me what you see.

And as to our continued arguement on semantics which I suppose I am in large part responsible for starting- everyone *thinks* rpg stands for rocket propelled grenade (including you). I just took it as an opportunity to show that you might not be as knowledgeable on this subject as you would like people to believe.

I'm outnumbered on this board. I have to gain the upper hand in some way. You understand.

CHA-CHING!

point is moot - why are we even there?

as Ron Paul says "we marched in, we can march out"

enough.

Please point out in my above posts where I expressed

overall support for the wars we are currently engaged in.

CHA-CHING!

Two armed men

Two others with foot long camera cases and the rest unarmed and casually walking down he middle of the street even though they see and hear the copter. I don't think the copter could be in danger from the AK's. If they were insurgants looking to ambush I think ALL of them would be armed and acting in a more stealthy manner. A camera with a telephoto lens extends to about 2ft long which is what you see visible from the corner. An RPG is between 4-6 ft in length and fired from the shoulder.

Reuters Chief Spiked Story on Killing of His Own Staff

David Schlesinger, the editor in chief of Reuters, declined to run a story by one of his own reporters containing claims that the 2007 killings of two Reuters staffers in Baghdad by U.S. troops may have been war crimes.

Reuters staffers Namir Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh were killed by U.S. helicopter gunships in Baghdad in 2007. Video of the attack, which shows the journalists standing next to unidentified armed men on a Baghdad street and records the destruction of a van attempting to retrieve a wounded Chmagh, was published this week by Wikileaks.

They had to quote ORWELL...didn't they...

Does everyone remember what PASTOR LINDSEY WILLIAMS said about these EVIL people running the world?

"They have a MORAL code of conduct; they TELL YOU what they are going to do before they do it"

George Orwell, Robert Welch, or even Alex Jones weren't giving us "predictions" - they've been reading us the actual PLAYBOOK ...

I don't think we realize how BAD, or how EVIL these misanthropic luciferians really are!

I agree.. Look at how

I agree.. Look at how accurate Lindsey Williams predictions he gave last October are today.. 6 months later and he's right on target.

“Defiance of God’s Law will eventually bring havoc to a society.” - Dr. Ron Paul

Since military personnel

Since military personnel likely leaked this, shouldn't we take this as a positive sign that there are dissenters within the military that want the war to end. Perhaps the feeling is more widespread than we imagine. I'm sure after so many years over there they wonder what is the point and why are they over there.

I would like

to comment on a particular part of that article. The picture of the RPG 29 is but one type of RPG. The RPG 7 is probably more common.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPG-7

The Apache operators said "RPG" not RPG29. Rather than embellish the story they should stick to the facts.

my Dear friend

you will not believe what just happened to me.

a man black man approached me and said some nice things and then "so you are the guy that broke this story - the story about the helicopters shooting I answered - yeah I posted it on dailypaul...he asked to write down the website and I did.
