A friend, who is a Giuliani and war supporter, sent my husband the following blog that was in the email. We are staunch supporters of Ron Paul. Any ideas on how we can respond to our friend? :

I was actually thinking of doing a serious post about Ron Paul. However briefly, I pondered preparing a scholarly inquiry into why it is that he’s the very definition of a crank. In the piece, I would link to his greatest hits, like that time he said our government would conjure up a Gulf of Tonkin incident to justify an invasion of Iran. It would have been an encyclopedic look into why Paul is a hero to groups like the John Birch Society. It was going to be a decisive triumph, a definitive smackdown that would show one and all that while Ron Paul does have his fans, Paul devotees, like their hero, reside firmly on the lunatic fringe.
But, as you may have deduced from the above graphic, this article will not be the Ron Paul-debunking monograph that I was contemplating. The following thoughtful email made me do a 180 degree turn on the matter:
You neocon filth. According to the viewers, the bullying would-be Mafia-don Guiliani sought
to huff-and-puff Paul's TRUTH off the stage, but the Republcian (sic) establishment (!!!) hot air isn't going to succeed this time.
The only thing you guys have to offer is hot air. We'll recylce (sic) all you idiotic treasonous anti-american (sic) neocon (sic) filth with every election.
As other bloggers who intrepidly delved into the subject of Ron Paul and his missing screw have discovered, this is more or less par for the course for communiqués from Paul supporters. Actually, this is one of the more literate efforts I received, and perhaps the only one that didn’t have multiple obscenities.
I also decided that doing a serious post on Ron Paul would be tantamount to answering a question that no one was asking. Other than his 83 followers across the nation who seem to have nothing better to do than send angry missives when someone has the audacity to question their hero, the rest of the country is completely indifferent to the daffy Congressman.
I WANT TO MAKE A SPECIAL NOTE of a critique filed by longtime HughHewitt.com bete noire Andrew Sullivan. Andrew wrote:
The conservative pundits are now referring to Ron Paul as a "crackpot." Hannity predictably savaged him last night (see above). The Hewitt site has an image of a man in a tin-foil hat; Dean Barnett and Hugh Hewitt both call for removing Paul from the debates, when he has been the best thing about them so far. Bill Benett wants him out. I'm getting the usual ridicule for taking him seriously from the usual GOP apparatchiks. They're scared, aren't they? The Internet polls show real support for him.
In response to Andrew’s sole justifiable complaint, we’ve upgraded and improved our tinfoil hat image. I hope everyone appreciates the effort. Regarding Paul’s successes in the internet polls, this shows only his followers’ a) Lack of lives; and b) Willingness to cheat. For a look at how to cheat on an internet poll, click here. Charles at LGF has caught the Paul followers red handed and has given them the boot.
As for anyone being afraid of Ron Paul, this is a tired and ridiculous trope. The only people afraid of Ron Paul are the children who live in his neighborhood who probably live in mortal fear of losing their baseball in old Dr. Paul’s yard and having to endure a 30 minute lecture on Washington’s Farewell Address as the price for getting it back.
My real reason for forgoing a serious piece on Ron Paul is anyone outside his adoring lunatic fringe who heard of him before last month knows he’s bonkers. Strict constructionism and original intent are fine things, but shoving every problem and every issue through the Founder’s Intent meat-grinder is lunacy. Besides, this rigid orthodoxy brings him down on what both Andrew and I consider to be the wrong side of the gay marriage question.
99% of the people who know the real Ron Paul story agree that he’s cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. While it’s true that I am not a particularly busy man, I would denigrate my own worth if I actually devoted my time to educating the other 1%.
Besides, I think the PhotoShop says it better than words possibly could.

Flagging this thread as offensive. Why?
This is now the fifth or sixth similar thread. They all follow the same script.
"I am a strong RP supporter, but A FRIEND SENT ME THIS LINK"...
[[add some sort of vituperative attack on Ron Paul here ]]
"How can I respond to this?"
While some such threads are sincere, it seems like some people are following a script.
Bye.
Please let this thread die… sick of seeing it.

Verbal Bully
When you can’t attack the message you have to attack the messenger. A Ron Paul win is going to upset the status quo.
Response
Sometimes the best way to respond is to respond with very little words. However, I must say your friend has shown you a great deal of respect...Not.
I would react in this stylish way.
Thank you for being so honest with my husband and me. We understand you are exercising your rights of expressing yourself in this trendy way. This is part of your First Amendment rights of the Constitution; this is why we have chosen to support Congressman Paul, who will protect your rights so you can express your views.
As others have said....
There is nothing substantial in this piece that clarifies what about RP this writer does not agree with.
A nasty letter from a supporter of RP is not an issue of disagreement. Every candidate has supporters who express themselves in less than savory ways from time to time.
The post is outdated,as others also mentioned.
These are not 'issues' to debate. This is an emotionally reactive writing.
It's kinda kooky if you ask me. Makes him sound like a 'crackpot'.(:
Alright the Neo-Cons
are running for cover, they know the threat that Ron Paul and the Constitution are to them and there agendas.
Expect a lot more of this low reporting, this time the people will do that talking and the walking to there nearest polling places and change this country in a way that has NEVER been seen True Peace, True Freedom and True Prosperity.
We are winning they know it and with every article they try to discredit OUR candidate adds more and more supporters to the rEVOLution !!!!
"Freedom is a right that can never be won in war, only by each individual "
A note to your friend
I'm pleased to see that this is what Ron Paul's critics have to stoop to in order to discredit the man. I'm not sure, however, why you suggest to do more research and then post a blog like this. It's easy to call a man a "crackpot" and in the "lunatic fringe". It's far more difficult to address the issues at hand, to talk about voting records, policy, and political experience.
The point is, Ron Paul detractors have little if any base on which to attack him because he stands for the principles on which our country was founded. You can't attack his immaculate conservative voting record, or his policies that promote personal Liberty and stay true to the Constitution. This is the sole reason why things so quickly fall to flat-out name-calling. Until the critics try to address the facts at hand rather than attempted smears it's not worth listening to them.
The second issue, his supporters, is a non-issue. Ron Paul supporters are not Ron Paul. Period. This tactic is used time and time again, yet it is a "guilt by association" argument that is false by definition. We are just stupid enough to fall for it over and over. Paul appeals to a large and diverse audience with a powerful message - this attracts many people. Some of these people are more vocal, and those are the ones you hear from, the ones that campaign tirelessly for him. The "silent majority" still exists. We are just not outspoken enough to make headlines or blogs - but the support is real, and this is evident in Ron Paul's fund raising numbers. He is approaching $12 million this quarter. Now, I don't know about you, but calling someone a "fringe candidate" who out raises the "top tier" candidates is a little ridiculous and frankly transparent.
I suggest you go to Ron Paul's site, read his positions, and research yourself. Then we'll talk.
Don't Respond / Drop it
Exactly, Spend the energy spreading the word to open minds.
People who choose to be stupid can't be helped.
Don't respond. Drop it.
.
One of the most painful lessons I ever learned - and am still learning - is that one can never win an argument with an ignorant person. Or a half-informed person, or a nasty person.
You could spend a long time composing a thoughtful, reasoned reply, only to have to wadded into a ball and flung back into your face.
Tis better to keep the focus on getting Ron Paul support where you can, help him win the primary elections and the nomination. There will always be nasty nay-sayers, full of their own egos. You can be elsewhere, among friends, working to help a great man. Leave the rabble to each other. We have stuff to do.
I disagree
You may not "win" the argument or get the person to retract statement/admit they were wrong, but you plant a seed in their mind.
When you talk about how Ron Paul stays true to the Constitution and the rule of law, they may scoff, but the next time they see a candidate talking, they will subconsciously analyze that person's rhetoric using those parameters.
And, when Ron Paul makes headline news for raising all kinds of money, they will rethink their original assessment and look at his message differently, under the scope you've helped them define.
"Wow, a lot of people really believe in this guy!"
A well crafted, non-confrontational response is not a bad idea. If they are uninformed, I say it is your duty to inform them. If they are blatantly nasty, call them on it.
This attack is 7 months old
There's no point in refuting this personal attack. Dean Barnett was reacting to the coverage that Ron Paul's early debate performances received at a time when the campaign had far fewer supporters.
Suggest to your friend that he research and read widely himself, rather than try to shock you with an old diatribe. Original sources would be the best way to come to his own conclusion. Start with the Ron Paul Library.
There is no valid argument there
I'd simply point out that throughout that entire "article", there isn't a single valid argument against Dr. Paul's stance on any issue. There are, however, a number of ad hominem attacks that attempt to discredit Dr. Paul in some way.
I guess I'd pose a question to your friend - if you honestly believe that Dr. Paul and all of his supporters are on the "lunatic fringe" as suggested by Dean Barnett, that would make you part of the "lunatic fringe" as well, wouldn't it? Does your friend consider you such a person, or does he consider you to be an intelligent, reasonable person?
If Dr. Paul is just supported by a bunch of crazies who spend their entire lives on the internet, how have we managed to raise nearly 12 million dollars this quarter, fund a completely grassroots effort to hire a blimp to advertise for Dr. Paul,
I'd suggest that it is your friend who needs to read up a bit more. Perhaps you could point him to the same reading list that Dr. Paul presented to Ghouliani?
Tin foil hat? Tee hee, how original!
Crackpot? Any intelligent person, having thorougly researched Ron Paul's views, would never come to that conclusion. The friends I have who don't agree with him just don't bother to read. They merely form their opinions by listening to talking points slander. They go along thinking the economy is just fine, the dollar is strong, China is our big buddy, and Iran is our sworn enemy. Ignorant fools to be pitied and scorned. The CFR loves them.
Once upon a time, "crackpots" thought that the earth was round, and revolved around the sun. "Sane" people thought that the earth was the center of the universe. Well, imagine that.
Scorn and pity?
I'll definitely agree that it is very frustrating when dealing with those types. However, I like to think we can bring about change by following the example of the man we all support. Pity and scorn are not a part of his message nor his actions, and for good reason. It will divide us, and we will be conquered. Organizations like the CFR know this, and depend on it for their existence. They create the rifts then offer their solutions, much like selling a product to a consumer.
On the other hand, as far as these pundits and pseudo-journalists who sell out their integrity and country for profit go, I do pity them. They are the ones who are brainwashing otherwise good Americans and are partially responsible for where we are as a nation.
The best way to deal with these feeble attacks on our man is to ignore them. Sending them emails only emboldens them, as they are simply trying to stir up the chicken coup, get more views to their dying media, and keep their paychecks from drying up.
Hugh Hewitt is one such person, and reading his post above, I am inclined to think that he was suffering from writer's block, had a deadline, so threw out a quick, baseless, attack piece, knowing full well what it would do. Why give him or others the pleasure?
For him there is little hope, for his readers, they can be brought around. This comes from a former Hugh Hewitt reader.

The subject of this post
Says to not take it personally and do some research. However, there is no substantive argument to research, and it is nothing except a personal attack. The subject should read "Please don't do any research- this is personal."
5% of people make things happen
10% of people watch things happen
85% say "What happened?"
Ask The Person
What is it about Dr. Paul's policies or positions that makes you think he's crazy? Ask for specifics.
Most people do not understand Dr. Paul's positions right off the bat. I know I didn't. It took much reason and logic (a couple of things I'm still trying to obtain more of) to fully understand the underlying philosophy of freedom Dr. Paul's positions are based on.
Once you are able to get the person to point to a specific position that they disagree with instead of just ad hominem attacks then you should be able to dissect their arguments and also point out real freedom-based positions that they are able to agree with.
Find out what is important to them. Then, build upon that position with the message of liberty and freedom that Dr. Paul talks about.
Also, let that person know that just because a few supporters don't know how to eloquently state their positions, doesn't mean that Dr. Paul is loony. Many people are still learning about the message of liberty and are zealous yet not articulate.
I had a friend like this...
I had a friend like this and worked on he and his wife for quite some time, to no avail. Eventually, I said my peace, gave them a stack of DVDs and other materials and said I did not want to talk to them about politics anymore until they seriously and honestly reassessed their views. Whenever they tried to bring it up, I would just grin and shake my head, and ask, "have you perused the materials I gave you yet?" The answer was either no or, "I am getting to it."
Eventually, they stopped bringing politics up knowing that they would get no response. This was right around the time Dr. Paul announced his candidacy, we had never discussed him. After this, we sort of drifted apart over the summer.
In October, this friend rang me and invited me to dinner. Rather surprised, I graciously accepted. My first clue that something was different, a rather blatant clue, was he and his wife both took off their jackets and had Ron Paul t-shirts on. I still wish I had a picture of my face as this occurred.
At this dinner, they thanked me for being so patient with them and were so grateful for the information I had given that they insisted on paying for my meal. I was amazed at the transformation they had gone through, as if their entire brain had been rewired and the critical thinking skills had been activated once again. The petty bickering nature and emotional non-logic was totally gone from their conversation. It was a rewarding experience. There really are not many things in life that can make you feel as good as this, knowing you have affected change in someone.
In any case, I asked them had they ever been to see Ron Paul, they said no, and we made the trip to the Philly rally together. The rest is history, +2 our side.
In any case, hope that story helps. To sum it up:
Keep up the good fight.
Ram
Great Suggestions
There have been a couple of people who I've turned onto Dr. Paul that thought I was crazy at first too. But when you present them with specific information, then they are more apt to look into it.
Here is a link I highly recommend to forward to your friend.
http://www.house.gov/paul/
There they will be able to read Dr. Paul's thoughts and understand his philosophy.
This is great. Thanks so
This is great. Thanks so much Ram!!
Ad HomMmminem
My answer : I am about to eat your lunch, Sonny.
Strawman glazed with ad hominem sauce, sprinkled with hasty generalizions, liberally garnished with an Appeal to authority and served with a side of red herring . You lose, Neocon. End of debate.

I would just phyiscally mail him Some Coco puffs!!!
With a Picture of the RONPAUL Blimp pasted on the back.
Maybe some Boston TEA Bags, Bumperstickers and a yard sign.
Definitely put some yard signs in his Yard every night for a week!!!!
I think that one was the straw!
That just broke this camel's back. I have been extremely nice to the stupid idiots who bash us and Ron Paul. I have been understanding to the point I have taken pity on those totally asinine half-wits. No more. From this point on I am ANGRILY going to support him. I can slander, lie and throw incoherent mud better than most. So to you stupid brainwashed conspiracy nuts who believe in everything but your own ability to make decisions, to you morons who can't take 2 seconds to find the truth, to you lame, fat, basement dwelling neo-con democrat wannabes...watch out...because I am now on the warpath for Ron Paul. And anywhere I find you I am going to show no respect for you, no mercy, and will hold you down and beat the truth into you if I have to.
You wish. Ron Paul wouldn't do it. Neither will I. We are better than that.

Thanks to the S.O.B. Alex Jones for lying about Ron Paul by saying, and posting on his website, that Paul said the government would stage a Gulf of Tonkin incident. People actually believe he said it now.

His only argument is that were crazy.
How can we take this guy seriously? All he did was call us crazy over and over again without debunking even one of his ideas. You haven't convinced me.
Whaddya expect from Hugh Hewitt? :-)
"As other bloggers who intrepidly delved into the subject of Ron Paul and his missing screw have discovered, this is more or less par for the course for communiqués from Paul supporters. I stopped there. No reason to even respond to garbage like this. Notice that he presents *one* email (which I will assume was real; there certainly are *some* people who write junk like that), and then asserts that there weren't any good ones. I call BS on that and would bet any amount of money on the planet (even specie, heheh).
If your friends are at all serious about wanting to look at things realistically, just point them to *any* open comments blog *anywhere* on the web where RP is discussed and have them read for themselves what RP supporters actually say. Heck, just bring them here!
