Closed Versus Open Primary
In a closed primary you can only vote for a candidate who is running in the party in which you are registered.
In an open primary you can vote for a candidate in any party you choose, regardless of your party affiliation

I just wanted to add that if you are not registered as a Republican, I would advise doing so because there has been some sneaky changes in the rules lately, and you'd be playing it safe by registering Republican for the primaries even if your state has an open primary.
