/EFE) At least 150 gold coins were found in the baggage of a US citizen as he awaited a flight to Panama here at the Mexico City airport, officials have said.

Thomas Arnold Martin, 58, 'appeared visibly nervous', prompting agents to run his suitcase through a scanner, which detected several containers inside, the Mexican Public Safety Secretariat said Tuesday.

One container held 50 gold coins with the legend 'Suid Afrika-South Africa' on them and two others had 100 coins inside that said 'United States of America'.

The coins weighed a total of more than five kg, the secretariat said.

Though Martin showed a receipt for the purchase of 50 gold coins worth $1,171 each, he was turned over to prosecutors, the secretariat said.

Is this because he failed to

Is this because he failed to declare them in customs, or did he violate some Mexican law about exporting specie?

I am out of touch with most Americans precisely because I am not out of touch with reality.

you would not have to declare anything

until you were in customs. The way I read the story was he was leaving mexico. He would have to declare upon entering a country...not leaving one.

So it could just be corrupt

So it could just be corrupt Mexican officials... Not that we should be throwing stones, given our glass house of cards.

I am out of touch with most Americans precisely because I am not out of touch with reality.

Probably some cooperation

Probably some cooperation between the US and Mexican governments regarding "money laundering" / preventing financial freedom.

Both governments know full and well that if the people they live so high off of robbing starts feeling safer about relocating value outside their reach, their looting will become more difficult.

So they invent all kinds of bogeymen trying to scare people away from doing it. Like accusing people of the "crime" of money laundering.
