Mitt Romney: "Rights Come From Government"
Submitted by phoobaar on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 13:55Did anyone else catch this in the debate yesterday? Those weren't his exact words of course, but he essentially said that if new rights become necessary, the people can ask government to grant them. It was during those little blurbs they played from each candidate.
This is in desperate need of being turned into a sound byte for YouTube and spread to every corner of the Internet. Romney is absolutely clueless. If you don't understand the basic premise that rights are inherent and government exists merely to protect them, then you have no business participating in government in any capacity.
Edit: Found it! It's right at the beginning: http://youtube.com/watch?v=dvd822WlolA
He gives a well-intentioned blurb about following the Constitution and not allowing activist judges to shred it, but he clearly doesn't understand the critical, fundamental idea that rights are inherent. They cannot be granted and they cannot be taken away! Things that are granted and taken away are called privileges. Rights and privileges are polar opposites, in that regard.
This is a non-trivial mistake. If he does not instinctively understand this, it would simply be too dangerous to allow him to become President. This is so important, that if I could ask all the candidates one question, Republican and Democrat, it would be to define the difference between rights and privileges. Once answered, there would be almost no reason to delve further into specific policies.

Here's the exact quote:
From page 24 of the transcript.
I think he needs to read up on the theory of natural law. Rights cannot be created, they can only be discovered and protected.
Also, a basic understanding of the Ninth Amendment would be useful.
There's a reading list for Rudy -- how about one for Mitt?
no shame....
what is wrong with these people.
i cant handle four more years of the same old lies
"Truth is treason in the empire of lies." - Ron Paul
What did you expect?
This is right from the CFR/David Rockefeller playbook of "we are smarter than you all are so we should run the world".
Romney, can you say,
Romney, can you say, "inalienable"?
The Founding Fathers also used a term we need to hear a lot more of (actually, to hear it at all) - "natural rights". I really wish they would stop saying "civil liberties" and just say "natural rights". That would be a whole lot stronger. When the media says people are complaining about the loss of "civil liberties" it makes us sound like whiners - "oh please give us our liberties back". They're RIGHTS, doggonit! They're what we naturally have as human beings - the BASICS like the right to life and liberty and fair trials by jury and habeas corpus and no secret prisons and the rights to the fruits of our labor. If we don't have these RIGHTS we might as well not live, right?

i have been debating my
i have been debating my friend all day about mitt romney and ron paul. the foundation of our debate is the constituion- which Im not an expert but Im learning. I asked her an interesting question, by what measure should we choose a candidate? She said by his family values and by his character, bla blah blaa. I said those are ways to measure choosing a friend but not for picking a leader, the only thing that matters- not his religion or who he sleeps with is, how well he follows the law because this is the only way people can resolve our differences by what agreement we have with our governement. And hopefully hes a nice guy with character too. i know i have her thinking. And i just sent her that sound bite from yesterday stating we get our rights from people.
Romney on Teen Pregnancy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVaxAO7vako&NR=1
He's using teen pregnancy to prove a point. problem is that teen pregnancy is actually decreasing and probably not because of the government program:
http://www.delmar.edu/socsci/rlong/data/TeenPregnancy-Nativi...
doesn't mean we shouldn't get rid of those government programs, just that Romney likes to make stuff up to make a point...

Boy!
That is most certainly the implication... that government decides what rights to give HUMANS... BEINGS born with INALIENABLE RIGHTS..
But Mitt doesn't read the Constitution, parts he doesn't agree with..
But boy he has gotten good at saying the word.. CONSTITUTION... lol!
I guess that is an improvement!! maybe when he talks with his lawyers he can ask them to tell him what it MEANS... oh yeah.. that is what he does... He reads it ... then says.. ok... lets decide what this should mean...
Romney is clueless
Remember he said in a debate when asked if he needed to get congressional approval to go to War that he would consult his lawyers first. This man scares me more than Gouliani and that's saying ALOT!
Good catch!
Good catch, phoobaar! I haven't seen the whole debate yet, just the RP parts. This concept is definitely something 99.9% of the population doesn't get, and this lack of knowledge can be directly connected to our diminishing freedom.

It really jumped out at me when I was watching the debate live. I actually had hoped that I heard him wrong, but sadly I did not. :-(

Constitutional Rights = Oxymoron
I have always told people they have no Constitutional Rights, and there never was any Constitutional Rights. They are and have always been Constitutional Protections of God-Given Rights and/or natural rights.
People keep saying their rights are being taken away, as if the rights were given to them.

Rights Granted by Government?
This just goes to demonstrate that these politicians have as much contempt for the Constitution as they do, the American people. Anyone can read the Declaration of Independence and read that individuals are: "Endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights....". The function of government is to protect those rights.
Mr. Romney, by his display of ignorance, has disqualified himself for the presidency, in my opinion. But then, Ron Paul is the only person running who is qualified.
The Communist Agenda
The Communist Agenda, among other things is to convince the people of the need for government.
In order for these things to happen, the Communists need unwitting, meek, idiots to help spread their message.
We call these people Socialists.
