Rand Paul names new campaign manager: Jesse Benton

by Joe Arnold

Posted on May 26, 2010 at 1:27 PM

After a week of national scrutiny and criticism that consumed the Rand Paul Senate campaign, Paul has named Jesse Benton as campaign manager, replacing David Adams, who will assume the title of Campaign Chairman, concentrating on building support county by county.

Benton was communications manager for the presidential campaign of Paul's father, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, and is married to Rand Paul's niece.

Benton tells me that the changes are not a result of the controversy sparked by Rand Paul's interview on MSNBC, in which the Bowling Green eye surgeon said he would worked to modify a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits racial discrimination by private businesses such as restaurants. Paul has disputed Democratic opponent Jack Conway's claim that Paul wanted to repeal the Civil Rights Act.

Benton, who has been advising the Paul campaign for months, says the campaign changes are a "clarification of the operation already running" and of the roles he and Adams were already filling in the campaign.

The most notable strategy change appears to be a direct result of the controversy. Benton told me, unlike the primary contest that Paul publicized with dozens of appearances on national cable, such as Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, "we're going to make sure the campaign is now focused on Kentucky."

Terrible choice for campaign manager...

Imagine my horror as I read your about christofascist campaign manager, Jesse Benton, demanding a Purity Pledge from your GOP opponents, supporting criminalization of abortion.
If this man remains your campaign manager, so long to the agenda so many of your supporters believe in - all to be thrown away to appease the most base and hypocritcal elements of your "base".

I can't think of a worse pick....

Rand, Rand, Rand....say it isn't so. Don't say you didn't learn anything from the INTENTIONAL SABOTAGING of your father's campaign??

I'll give you one more reason to worry about this selection, and I've even talked about it on my radio show....

After the Ron Paul campaign refused to work with those patriots who were at the Ames Straw Poll trying to be sure the vote wasn't rigged (and it clearly was, giving us a 5th place finish, when we clearly had the 2nd most people there after Romney's hired minions) we got ZERO television interviews for a full week afterward, when we'd been averaging several a week, prior. I called the campaign and asked the Benton folks what was going on. Later that same afternoon, I got a call saying they had set up three TV appearances, and they were all lined up and scheduled.

Now, why was it up to a volunteer from northern Maine to tell Benton to do his job?!?

Moore, Benton, Seehusen...I wouldn't touch any of these people with a 10-foot poll.

Here in Maine, the guy they hired as state coordinator for Ron's nomination bid turned out to be head of a group (The Republican Leadership Council) whose current national president called for world government a few years back. This guy (Ken Lindell) also endorsed the most liberal candidate running for the Maine GOP nomination for Governor (Peter Mills, who everyone in ME knows is a closet Democrat) until his membership forced his group to endorse the liberty candidate (Paul LePage.) Again, I would steer totally clear of anyone who was even remotely-connected with that crooked group who ruined Ron's presidential bid.

You guys really need to give Jesse Benton a break..

You could not pay me to do the job Jesse did for Ron Paul (and now Rand Paul).

Unlike Carl Rove, Jesse has no friends in the corporate media. No friends there, only character hit men (and women).

Jesse's liberty candidates are constantly being attacked on all fronts; regardless of what they've actually said.

I'm sure its somewhat like playing Space Invaders (the atari game) when the rows of aliens are moving really fast and close to the bottom and about to land on you. Major Stress!

We should not be so harsh on Ron's campaign staff no matter how frustrated we get (I've been there too with them).

Please remember, These nice folks are under tremendous pressure and stress.

They are trying to balance and play an affective defense while trying also to get on offense whenever possible.

It is time for us to stop bad mouthing these good people who are doing the best that they can under the circumstances.

Keep up the good work Jesse! We all make mistakes; especially when we are under pressure.

Thanks for adding this balance, AnAppeal,

It's awfully tempting to armchair when we are disappointed and frustrated.
You make some very good points.

Benton better not squander all the hard work the grassroots

has put into yet another Paul campaign, or else plenty of people are gonna be stark raving mad. And I wouldn't want to have the name Jesse Benton in that situation.

I hope Jesse has learned his lessons and will do better this time around. But I'd keep him on a short leash. If he screws up just once, I'd can his butt and fast.

I wish this was a practical joke.

I'd rather have a bottle in front o' me than a frontal lobotomy

2nd time better be a GD Charm

2nd time better be a GD Charm or I am gonna find this guy and personaly cause H..m to him....!!!

Honor God?

well, your personal threats and taking the Lord's name in letters sure is God honoring. I wonder how the precious God honoring Paul family would feel about threats to Rand's nephew and Ron's grandson ( I am sure they feel Jesse is family, even though he is by marriage.)

Well, this stinks!

I thought Rand was smarter.

Ron Paul is My President

"Benton, says the campaign changes are a "clarification of the operation already running" and of the roles he and Adams were already filling in the campaign."
-well that explains whats recently gone wrong with the campaign

looks like the grassroots will again not only have to run a Paul campaign but work overtime to make up for the inevitable screw ups and incompetence Jesse Benton brings...

This is from "The Onion", right?

I will fear no evil ........

Isn't Jesse Benton the same

Isn't Jesse Benton the same genius who booked the Bruno interview for Ron Paul?

Why was booking a movie

Why was booking a movie appearance by Ron such a bad thing? I think Ron handled just the way a 70+ years old conservative candidate ought to have handled it.

Imagine what Larry Craig or Linsey Graham would have done under the same circumstances. Ron separated himself from the GOP pack.

Hmmm... then Adams must've messed up.

I'm wary of Benton (or weary... I'll let you decide), but I'm not one to look beyond the symbolism in this re-organizational gesture.

Rand might have felt that he was losing touch with his supporters (maybe it was David Adams who suggested that he not take a yes/no stance on the CRA, or that he say he'd vote for it, or maybe Adams is to blame for some of his other more neoconservative-sounding positions... who knows?) so he made a move to re-energize the base; i.e. hire the communications coordinator for his dad's campaign as his campaign manager.

I suppose this could be seen as Rand reconnecting with the grassroots. The only problem is, I don't think many of Ron's supporters liked the way Benton handled Ron's campaign... I know I didn't. What I found most disconcerting was the fact that Benton helped arrange BOTH Ron Paul AND Bob Barr's appearances in the Borat and Bruno movies. SERIOUSLY Benton...

But the same time, I remember hearing Rand thank Benton during his Victory speech, so the guy must have made an impression on him.

Again, who knows? Maybe with this move, he'll start to bend and take more of the controversial positions that his father has defended in the past. Does anyone know if Benton helped encourage Ron Paul's openness with the frankness and directness of his respect and fealty towards the Constitution? If so, this may be a step in the right direction.

What is wrong with this person ?

I don't know this person.
What is wrong with this person ?

Apart from the "he set up Dr Paul with Bruno" thing, for which I really don't see why he couldn't have been fooled himself.

So, what is so dramatic about this nomination ?

what's wrong w/ benton?

because he scheduled paul to interview with bruno?

big deal. it was obviously not on purpose.

what else?

wasn't there something about the barr campaign that didn't go over very well. can somebody refresh my memory?

Did you see Ron's campaign

Did you see Ron's campaign ads? Did you ever hear Benton's interviews? Sigh.

sounds to me like

sounds to me like the fall guy.

Read David Adams' Twitter Post for the Truth??

When I saw the headline of this topic,

I expected to see that it was a joke, or a spoof topic, or something like that.

I can't even believe this is actually real.

Who's next to be hired?
Lew Moore?

David Adams Facebook Status is . . .

David Adams-- wonders why anyone is surprised about liberal media getting another story wrong.

Well, that pretty much settles it.

Kentucky, welcome your new Senator Jack Conway.

I hope that somehow Jesse can use this opportunity to vindicate himself, but as it stands now, I'm not a fan of this move.

Adams ran a helluva campaign

Adams ran a helluva campaign until they won. Not a fan of Benton.

10-15 million more voters need to believe in non-interventionism (liberty) at home and abroad to change America. Minds changed on Syria. Minds changing on privacy. "Printing money" is part of the dialogue. Win minds through focus, strategy.

I agree

Adams ran a great campaign and Jesse Benton always reminds me of terrible blunders during Ron's presidential run.

Me too..seeing his name again

Me too..seeing his name again scares me for the movement.

I hope i'm wrong but I see

I hope i'm wrong but I see the campaign going down hill FAST with Jesse at the wheel. If you think the CRA issue was bad just wait.

I think Jesse has a great grasp on politics and will be effective. The times I've heard him speak he always sounded wise with how deal with the media, etc.
