Ron Paul on PBS 'NOW' - Tonight
My PBS schedule says tonight (12/14) at 8:00pm. Check your local listings for times in your area, or use your zip code in this link. The show is called 'NOW' and it is on PBS. From their website:
At the intersection of the Internet and politics, presidential candidate Ron Paul's supporters are rewriting the rules of political campaigns. NOW explores how the Texas congressman and his supporters are using the Internet to attract voters—and massive campaign contributions—from across the political spectrum. Supporters include anti-war progressives, anti-tax libertarians, civil libertarians, and even some white supremacists. The common theme is anger over where the country is heading.
"Ron Paul's campaign is so extraordinary to many of us because even while it was getting massive online traffic, you'd be lucky to get a whisper of his campaign in a lot of media outlets," said Zephyr Teachout, Howard Dean's former online organizer and now a Duke University professor....

First Impressions
Look, I don't post here much, and I don't think bickering is going to accomplish much, we have canvassing and delegate work to do, Iowans to call etc. but I'm surprised that people think there are two sides to this.
I saw the preview to this NOW program a while back, and after having seen what I suppose is the real, or TV version on YouTube already, I feel like I was given a bait and switch. The preview is unbelievably positive, but they took the best parts out of the full length.
Bottom line: First Impressions matter.
What does someone who knows little or nothing about Paul hear first?
That he's supported by white supremacists.
What happens then?
Their ears close.
After the introduction that gray-haired guy gave, they don't care about him. They just see that a kooky guy can get a lot of support on the internet. If anything it taints their ideas of free-speech on the internet.
Sure, they see a lot of things about how his campaign is going so well, how its a marvel and can be learned from, but with the assessment about his ideas being unrealistic, and the obligatory "he can't win" from someone who seems to be excited about him, no less. It ends up just being another curiosity.
Some people will see past that. Some will be curious enough to go to the internet. Some will be nonconformist enough to think that he's just the man for them. But they will be such a minority.
One of the biggest reasons for us to be angry about this is that one additional drip in the rain of disparagement. I mean the line about how Paul is not going to win. Its not just one person's opinion, its another installment of a continual drip from all the news shows and commentators.
If he was some odd third-party candidate they could have gotten away with it. It could be passed off as opinion. But now its just the latest installment of the big lie. Its not as if reporters are really ignorant of the principle of propaganda that tells us that if you repeat something often enough, even if it is improbable, people start to think its true. I think its not only very irresponsible for them to be getting away with that in a democracy, I think its a crime against this country. They know TV exposure translates to votes. That's why this money, this tea-party is such big news. By their rules he IS winning. By their rules he IS a viable candidate, but they are showing their hand in using their power far too much.
Paul is doing very well, but there is a chance he could lose.
And if he does- if, when it's all over they've managed to say he can't win just enough times to make it a reality I am going to be very very angry. What about you?
So is it more of an actual
So is it more of an actual interview or a hack-job on our guy? Is it at least going to fall into the category of "any publicity is good publicity"?
Canvassing + Raffle = Viral Ron Paul!

I thought it was a wonderfully positive piece on Dr. Paul
I think that the producers have to put in the obligatory stuff about Paul's "extremist" supporters. It sounds like something that the editors made them do.
But from start to finish, the material is EXTREMELY supportive of Dr. Paul, and shows his supporters as ordinary, very dedicated people.
Then also have an extended interview with Paul on the pbs.orb/now/
website. Gonna watch that tomorrow.
This interview is great, and they mention Trevor and the teaparty site, and the timing is just perfect.
The white supremacist stuff is just a lot of baloney, anyway, and we all know that.
WOW, if II've learned nothing else...
...from the tolerance you've shown to what is, in my mind, a completely unfair and intolerant view of the man from PBS, the mainline Ron Paul supporters seem to be much more middle of the road than the mainstream media paints them as being.
I'm really bowled-over that you all think he was given fair treatment by NOW.
I think that Paul supporters should be outraged by PBS' treatment. Actually, the blatantly unfair treatment of Dr. Paul by NOW was what led me to this forum as a new poster. I saw it and said to myself "man, PBS is trying to acknowledge him just so they can screw him."
God Bless you folks and keep at it. You're a true inspiration to the truest meaning of American Spirit in your support for Dr. Paul.
You'll find my vote being cast for Dr. Paul on election day (if he's on the ballot), but I'm intruding on your forum because I saw PBS' NOW treatment of him.
PBS, to their credit, often post their shows in their entirety online. Maybe you guys should watch it again.
I took this away: 1. PBS is trying to make Ron Paul look like a white supremacist. 2. Libertarian Economic views are wrong: let's ask a completely biased "expert" for the final word.
I'm really shocked that you guys viewed this treatment as "positive".
Shocked by reactions
I watched the NOW piece on Ron Paul last night, and I have to say that I'm completely shocked that Paul supporters aren't recognizing it for what it was; a Hit-Job on Dr. Paul.
NOW selectively focused on the campaign contributions that Dr. Paul received from white supremacists. Dr. Paul intelligently explained his reasons for accepting these contributions and denounced white supremacists.
How does NOW frame this (misquoting): "Until now (emphasis on "now"), Ron Paul hasn't denounced the views of white supremacists."
Are you kidding me? Had he even been asked before?
Then, to deride Dr. Paul's Libertarian views, they bring on an obviously Collecitivist Left-leaning college professor to sum up the Leftist view of the subject in a soundbite, while volumes have been written over the course of centuries on the subject, just so NOW can be sure that Joe Average is at home "thinking correctly" and not getting the "wrong impression" from PBS' "balanced treatment".
Please.
NOW thinks Ron Paul and his supporters are an annoyance and PBS despises Ron Paul's views.
Man, you guys should be tearing PBS to shreds. Scary.
NOW more media attention
Yes, I agree that it was a pretty decent piece about the Ron Paul Revolution. It plus the Mad Money interview have been some of the best coverage to date. The only complaint is they should have used another political scientist to balance out Professor Epstein. I guess, though, Professor Teachout was thought to be the balance. Frankly, she was great. I don't agree with her, though, in her opinion of Paul not winning the election. Without a doubt, he will win. Go Ron Paul and let's go to the Boston Tea Party!
I liked it too
I thought it was pretty good and well balanced. I have no complaints.
I am also glad they asked him the white supremest question. I was hopping Glenn Beck would ask him that so it would get out there that he does not support there backwards view.
They did a GREAT job of showing what we are doing, everything but the Blimp. But then that is todays news.
Just finsihed it the second time
Watched with two of my friends, who may be converted. The negatives were really not negative.
1. The White Supremacy really came in response to Paul saying he was getting funding from people he didn't agree with, so they showed why and what eh was talking about. So to me it wasn't bad, and in addition he got a chance to answer it once and for all.
2. The Columbia Professor, David Epstein, was just a devils advocate. Without him it would have been a one-sided Ron Paul promotional piece. Epstein was really talking about communism about Government trying to even out the plain field.
3. When she said he isn't going to win the presidency. Well, please understand form her standpoint that is what it looks like. Second, she also said his message will live on forever.
Over all it was probably too short, but it will definitely get more peoples attention, and maybe even more supporters.

could have been worse
At least they didn't beat on the dead 9/11 truther horse this time, and they never said "isolationist". Yeah that guy was clearly promoting some kind of communist ideas but they presented him as an authority figure, a voice of reason against Dr. Paul's idea of getting rid of social security and medicare. He was promoting some kind of utopian fantasy land. Oh yeah that lady clearly had mixed emotions, she wished she could have had the kind of support Ron Paul has, and she wrongly assumes that because Howard "The Duck" Dean imploded before the primary in spite of his internet supporters, that Ron Paul can't win either. Boy will she be upset if Ron Paul wins some state primaries without any official "internet organizer" at all.
Ok They Thru Us A Bone!
I just watched the local news here in Ca. and once again, they showed the current national (Shit) polls. The Good Dr. Paul was @ 8% and not one single word was said about him. We really need to put our heads together and come up with a way to counter all this B.S. Old Media. I am starting to fell cornered and that does not fly with me. Their must be a way to break their backs. Everyone please stay focused at the task and stop all the "He said She said. I am out every weekend with my sign and donating and will continue this approach, but I fell we can do something much bigger buy putting our thoughts together!
We all Love this Guy! In addition, there are many smart people here on this site, so lets get down to It.!!
I will Fight the Fight period.
Ca. for the Good Dr. Paul
BobMo
polls
Yeah they keep quoting those polls, but they don't tell you that those polls are notoriously inaccurate at predicting the primary elections. In September 1991 Bill Clinton was polling at 2% nationwide and Mario Cuomo was over 30%. People who aren't very enthusiastic about their choice have less incentive to head out into the winter cold to vote, and primaries have very low turnout rates. Ron Paul supporters are the most enthusiastic of any candidate, so I think he has a really good chance to pull off some surprising wins.
Just watched it.
The few "attacks" were some "polticial " professor(whatever he was called) saying Paul wants to do away with helping people @ the federal govt level, and it isn't fair to all people(basically, fear mongoring , imho).
The "Howard Dean" lady.... she said'He can't win"...sounded more like bitter apples, imho, than honesty.
Overall...for people who do not know of Ron Paul, they did show some positive news. Some of the people were"normal"... in their 30's, and older, etc...not some kooks, as they like to claim.... did not see anyone acting "odd", or "nuts".
Lot of people holding signs, etc..
Maybe some more people will check out Ron Paul now?
I don't know.
In my area... I think PBS once said about 50,000 people a week tune-up to PBS(daily?).
That's just in 5-6 counties out of 88.
Someone's going to be checking out this Ron Paul fellow, I bet, who may not have before.
Hit Piece
That was a thinly veiled hit job. Maybe they did it because they know Dr. Paul wants to remove their federal funding. They mentioned the bit about the brothel owner supporting him, when they clearly would know that Tucker Carlson engineered that story, and never mentioned Carlson's involvement, and tried to act like Dr. Paul has been soliciting support from white supremacists (make him deny it). Then they interview two nobodies, who have nothing whatsoever to do with Dr. Paul or his campaign, as if they represent the voices of reason. That lady who said he won't win, and that guy with the line about needing government to "level the playing field"? What country does that guy think that is happening in? Certainly not this one. I let PBS know I thought the story was a piece of crap. The Jim Cramer piece was awesome though, best interview on TV yet.
Amen, Oprah
That was a disgusting piece of yellow journalism. Thank God, Jim Cramer gave us something to cheer about tonight. Between "Huckabee surging in the polls" (but not in donations!) and PBS, I needed a good pick me up. The worrisome part is that the media is so effectively putting out the "can't win" lie to the brain dead average voter. Redoubling my efforts. Have a great Tea Party this weekend all.
it's all about getting out the vote
Huckleberry Hound is begging for gas money. If people sorta like him they will pick him in a telephone poll, but will they go out in 20 below wind chill to pull the lever for him? Most will not. Plus he doesn't have the grass roots support or any kind of campaign organization that will be able to drag his supporters to the polls.
A pretty good intro to our man!
Look, I am one of the FIRST people here to get righteous and uncompromising in the face of half truth exposure. I thought that the piece was one of the best attempts yet by "fossil media" to explore in an honest way the DEPTH of the Ron Paul phenomenon AND message.
I am using this clip to send out to a whole batch of my more "sensitive" potential converts. it is just the right length, introduces some of the core ideas, and shares some of the PASSION behind our cause.
"Luctor et Emergo" - Struggle and Emerge
All TV exposure
only sends people to the web for more information. NOW did a fine job.
They are the only media outlet so far that has identified the bottom up campaign.
Now, that being said, Now's audience is mostly social liberals. So the "college professor" accentuating fear of homeless starvation without a nanny state was just a bone to the weekly audience.
America is sick, call a doctor! Dr. Ron Paul.
I liked it
We want our public TV to show all sides of a story. Of course they are not going to lavish praises on Ron Paul, support all of his issues, or endorse him.
They are going to address hot topics like the white supremest connection, which they did fairly and showed Paul was not a racist. They discussed his views and called him a libertarian republican--not just libertarian The show really was about "us" and how "we" have changed politics.
They quoted the girl as saying Ron Paul won't win, BUT NOW didn't say that. We will have to prove her wrong--donate more on Dec 16th!
They quoted a professor who disagreed with his dependency on individual responsibility and charity, but that is a legitimate concern. Ron Paul is up to the task of showing the superiority of living by the constitution and being fiscally responsible and how that helps more people in the long run.
We want to engage debate---not fight it.
I thought it was fair and brought attention to Ron Paul. I would be proud to show it to anyone.
I fear if we over-react and send angry emails then we will miss an opportunity to show the base of his support is civil. We work hard--lets not ruin it by feeding into the narrative that Ron Paul supporters are rabid.
We are above that. We raise money. We work hard off line. We will surprise the world. The world is depending on us to reignite the flame of liberty in the hearts of America and everyone else.
We are fulfilling a tall order. Let's keep working, keep pushing for media coverage, keep donating, and thank NOW for introducing the movement.
Remember this Sunday--donate and get others to donate. Better to sacrifice now while we have an option instead of later out of desperation.
"WAKE UP PEOPLE"!
Don't you see who they are pandering to ?
The television audiance gets the chopped up twisted version (just enough to get away with in the mainstream) and the internet audience gets the whole story. I don't know about anyone else, but I am sick and tired and i'm not gonna take this anymore ! ! ! ! !

No
I disagree.
I honestly can't understand why you would want to lodge a complaint with them over the Ron Paul piece. They gave him a fair expose. Sure, they think he's crazy, but they didn't come right out and say so. They implied it in the follow up piece, but they didn't tarnish the Paul segment with that implication. This is to be commended.
Don't overreact.
The net result of this episode of NOW will be that people will "Google Ron Paul," because that's what his segment makes you want to do.

I would not say we should respond to NOW
by calling them or emailing them.
I do not think that many people are online as RP people tend to think. Even most who do have internet access don't spend their days online like people on Dailypaul do. We won the internet war and will win it to the end unless the others get busy. But there is a far greater battle offline. This is where it counts. Internet good for the young and organization. But we must not be fooled into thinking that post debate polls online are accurate. We need to hit the streets for many months to come.
Fair but unbalanced
I'm not sure where some of the anger is coming from. I found the Ron Paul segment more than fair. Positive, even.
What bothered me was the follow up piece, about an imagined "minister of the future" position in government. This was clearly placed to counter Ron Paul's positions. The very idea that we would base policy on an attempt to predict the future is ludicrous on its face. But that won't stop it from happening; see the anthropogenic global warming movement, and all the policy being based on inherently fallible computer modeling.
Taken as a whole, the tone of the show went from an uplifting profile of a candidate with genuine grassroots support, to the resignation (with feigned regret) that his ideas are too impractical for our "progressive new world."
But this is to be expected from PBS. They were born of radical leftists, and they will always retain a leftward slant. In short: PBS has a political agenda. See here for an expose on this.
Still, the Ron Paul piece was quite good, when viewed alone.

20 seconds in...
"His on-line supporters love his vow to get rid of the federal government"
WTF????
This is what I said below
This is the very start of it. A lot of statements were strung together so RP people may have missed that, but I didn't. There was another word following this statement but it was not directly connected. With statements like this first impressions are everything, and it would have warped anyone's views of RP for the rest of the show. Thus all these people are just wanting to abolish the entire Federal government. Well we do get a little different picture later on but the feeling is still the guiding principle. The feeling that certain people are fed up with government and want no more of it. There was a proper counter to this impression given, only when RP said the few statements about there being positives. It would have been very easy to throw in one line about stating what RP and/or the constitution states the purpose of the Fed is. Anyway, my whole point is that they painted a picture carefully to create an impression. People walked away with that impression and are unsuspecting of its distortion. And it appears a good number of RP supporters even feel for it. Watch it again people. Don't let the TV images hypnotize you so that you miss the manipulation. Break it down bit by bit.
A Little Perspective
I have a question for those who didn't like this program.
I have asked a couple of times if anyone can tell me of a media outlet that has given Ron fairer treatment and I saw no replies. There was some negative stuff on NOW, but the story was long and had lots of our people speaking their mind.
We need media coverage as we can't do everything on the net. Please point me to a better MSM program on RP if it exists. And if the NOW piece stacks up favorably compared to other media coverage, why be so harsh?
Not trying to be beligerent, I want to understand your point of view.
Positive media coverage
Today's interview with Jim Cramer was excellent, Cramer practically bows down and worships him.
http://www.cnbc.com/id/22261655
An older MSM interview that shows him in a very positive light is his love fest with Chris Matthews on Hardball on 10/9/07:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvXu9fSV6xE
OH, OKAY !
So, he wants to get rid of the government, then cut him off when responding to a direct question in order to support what they just said " He wants to get rid of the government....
This is the type of shit we need to stop !!!
jakofharts
They are all the same man
It is not about how fair on some scale, it is about truth or lies. What does it matter if some lie more obviously than others or more times. We want fairness. These guys pulled the same tricks.
Now you also must realize that this NOW show is late in the game. The MSM will treat RP much differently from hear on because of all the money and support. But they are still all the same. And the lies are still there in this show.
We all like 90% of the program, but it is not about 10 to 90 percentages. It is about honesty. If it was much shorter than all the better. I will show you several CNN videos that are way better than this. Shorter but much fairer. Just go look up the most popular RP videos youtube.
Fair Enough
I remain in disagreement but respect your point of view and your emphasis on a "close reading" and deep analysis of the subject at hand.
"SHOUT IT OUT"
We need to let them know how "absolutely discusted" we are and expose these bastards that control PBS, I for one will never contribute to or buy any of the bullshit !!!
