Farm Food Freedom Wars Escalate in US

Your food/health freedom at stake in your county now; government/corporate partnerships--an article I just published-- and getting record hits.

With all the recent FDA, USDA and state actions against family farmers and court decsions, with the Whole Foods ban on raw milk-- and now Organic Pastures banning farmers who trade/share in raw milk-- the farm food freedom wars are now hotter than ever. Jump in.

Was a $1.0 million dollar federal grant and much bigger future guarantees linked to the Organic Valley decision to cut-off raw milk sellers ? Is the decision linked to their cooperation with federal, state and local authorities?

The major U.S. organic dairy corporation, Organic Valley, announced this week they will terminate its contracts with those dairies that sell raw milk. It said that they will give those dairies some time before the pickups and the nice incomes cease.

via more procedural shenanigans.

In China, the peoples are being removed from the farm lands.

China is a total Agenda 21 train wreck happening now.
The fascist agenda with oppressor and victim agenda is nearly complete in America too by the same means, but it doesn't mean that mono crop intensive corporate farming is what our future should bring.
Support your local small family farmers, despite the arrogant ignorance of the FDA.

Santa says: “Stand with Farmers"

These types of injustices are a travesty, but they aren’t uncommon. All over the U.S., corporations are using their power to squeeze money from the pockets of the little guy into their own. In the past 30 years, the failure to enforce antitrust laws in food and agriculture has had a devastating impact on farmers, rural communities and American consumers.

We're fighting back by telling the Department of Justice and the USDA to stand up for America's family farmers and take a strong stand against abuses of corporate concentration in our food and agricultural system.
We are just 10,000 actions away from reaching 250,000 comments. Will you help us reach a quarter of a million comments?

Wisconsin Rules on Raw Cider?

First, thanks Augie and others for all the good info and links!

Mid- September is the start of cider season in Wisconsin. Please visit your favorite apple orchard and ask for RAW cider. If they won't offer it, ask why not.
Tell 'em you'll press it yourself if necessary! What they're trying to do is no different than in the dairy business. Put the little guy out of business. Buy/sell is supposed to be an agreement between patron and business owner. Who do YOU trust more? Big business/govt/lawyers or...your local farmer?

If they won't sell you raw cider, tell 'em you won't do business. You're going to plant your own trees and buy a juicer!

Also: U.V. treatment is not raw. Only a foot in the door for more control.

I tried to by raw milk last week

I pulled up to this old farm, looked so quaint... and I was treated like some kind of intruder. The farm is in the middle of an upper class part of the valley, and I dressed like a woman who chases a toddler and chickens all day. I was invited to wait, outside on a pretty cold morning, with a toddler in PJs in tow, while "Corrie finishes his shower." (I had an appointment, mind you.) I almost asked if Corrie would be wanking or not, but the baby was already shivering so we just left.

Whatever else I said a minute ago, the last word I want to get in is
LOVE!

Out, Monsanto! No GMOs in National Wildlife Refuge, Says Federal Judge

In what could be a huge blow to Monsanto and a boon for small farms, a federal judge issued a ruling in Missouri stating that the US Fish and Wildlife shouldn't have allowed genetically modified crops on a national wildlife refuge. As a result of the ruling, 37 farming contracts—most of which were being used for GMO soybean and corn crops—have been canceled. Will this set a national precedent, paving the way for tougher rules and closer scrutiny of the environmental impact GMOs

Farmer-turned-hunger striker dies in Venezuela

Over the past eight years, Chavez's government says it has seized more than 5 million acres (2 million hectares) of farmland, often targeting property that officials contend was either fallow or underused. The government has said it aims to boost food production and aid the landless.

Critics say the measures have often targeted working farms and are hurting food output.

Why would anyone buy

Why would anyone buy pasterurized, homegenized organic milk and pay 3 times the price? Un-organic Valley makes me laugh. Undoubtedly, they are responsible for twisting the arm of the Marxist Governor (Doyle) vetoed.

Well, everyone. Is it time we all

boycotted 'Organic Valley' sell outs?

That's what I'm gonna do right now. And I will contact them and talk to their reps.

We Americans have a right to choose our food and they need to know that. Just because they are entitled to the 'organic' label does not necessarily mean their cows are grass fed and at pasture.

Mostly they are not. Its because they feed the cows 'organic' grains they can get away with that, however, ruminants cannot digest grains very well at all without digestive and intestinal disruptions. Its hell for those cows that ought to be only eating grass and it weakens them.

I notice on Organic Valley labels they indicate there is no difference in the milk between a cow that is given growth hormone and a cow that isn't. Right.

Amish fight back by "re-taking" lands and farming them.

"They are sort of challenging some of the mainstream assumptions about progress and how you achieve the good life and happiness," said Elizabethtown professor Don Kraybill, the study's director. "They're not merely surviving; they're thriving, and growing at this very rapid rate."

The highest rates of growth over the past year were recorded in New York (19 percent), Minnesota (9 percent), Missouri (8 percent), Wisconsin (7 percent) and Illinois (7 percent). High-growth areas for Amish in the past five years also include Kentucky, Kansas and Iowa. Farmland in Lancaster County, Pa., can cost $15,000 an acre, compared with $2,000 or $3,000 per acre elsewhere.

The newest state to get an Amish settlement is South Dakota, after a group of at least six families bought several farms near Tripp in the southeastern part of the state. They have planted forage for their cows, built barns and established a weekly bake sale.

I will have to

post some of these comments at the Journal. Great.

they do 'keep to themselves', which is . . .

their right--

I do business with Amish farmers and 'grocers'--

I buy bulk grains and legumes and raw sugar--

I buy fruit in large amounts in the fall from them--

I have bought stoneware (there's a potter in one of our Amish settlements)--

I love talking to these people. It's sometimes frustrating how 'businesslike' they are; I would honestly like to get to know them better. They can be very warm and kind, but I think there is a fear there, that they will lose their way of life if they 'associate' too much with "us".

Anyway, I enjoy spending time in their establishments--

I've had only one glimpse into an Amish home (on invitation and not very far inside)--

and it was extraordinarily clean and in order.

I always feel wistful when I am around them.

When I see them in their buggies and on their bicycles and in the large black vans that bring groups of them into town, I have a desire to talk to them, but when in town they keep very much to themselves.

I don't know why I am sharing all of this; perhaps to say that I feel a strong impulse to somehow 'join hands' with them, and yet I can't.

I do not believe in their religion; I admire it. But it's not my religion. I have to be open to many more things than they are, unfortunately--

or at least I have chosen to be.

Anyway--

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

Tips

Ask questions about their food production, learn their type of humor, mention a little faith stuff-- tell them about yourself. You can get to know them and talk about anything.

Thank you; thank you very much--

This was two months ago, and I didn't see it--

I appreciate the advice.

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

the Amish are wonderful guides.....

thanks ever so much....

the Amish practices are object lessons for us all....

being FREE is a life style for them and could be for ever so many more....

July 06, Breaking: Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Landmark Egg Bill

This victory comes just days after The HSUS brokered a deal with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and the state’s largest agriculture groups to impose a moratorium on new battery cage facilities in Ohio, the nation’s second largest egg production state.

Change for animals subjected to intensive confinement is coming, and the victories this week are plain evidence of that.

I haven't read this bill, but-----

could it be stretched to include chickens confined in chicken tractors in suburban back yards?
We need to be careful about supporting ANY bills that can restrict private property rights.

Family Farms

My family and I operate a family farm here in Alaska and speaking from experience one way to support them is to buy from them. We want nothing to do with the government and will grow and sell what we want anyway no matter what they say. We stay out of all the farmer welfare programs and don't reply to any USDA surveys so we don't exist.

Augie, are you the same Augie that David and Fawn Christopher

always talk so adoringly about?

Udderly ridiculous

Milk is supposed to do a body good, build strong bones and healthy teeth. Unfortunately, the truth behind the dairy industry is not what its marketing image would have you believe. Behind the hype of the milk mustache and happy cows is a world of corruption that the Department of Justice has decided is worth investigating – and today is a big day.

Five Things You Can Do to Break up Big Food and Build Local Food Economies,
Big agribusiness has taken over your dinner table. This corporate domination has harmed farmers, who are stuck buying inputs and selling product to a tiny number of corporations. Monopoly power over our food has also limited the number of consumer choices to a few brands of unhealthy processed foods, and many neighborhoods are left without any fresh produce at all.
