Disaster: BP Oil Leak May Last Until Christmas

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc’s failure since April to plug a Gulf of Mexico oil leak have prompted forecasts the crude may continue gushing into December in what President Barack Obama has called the greatest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

BP’s attempts so far to cap the well and plug the leak on the seabed a mile below the surface haven’t worked, while the start of the Atlantic hurricane season this week indicates storms in the Gulf may disrupt other efforts.

“The worst-case scenario is Christmas time,” Dan Pickering, the head of research at energy investor Tudor Pickering Holt & Co. in Houston, said. “This process is teaching us to be skeptical of deadlines.”

Ending the year with a still-gushing well would mean about 4 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf, based on the government’s current estimate of 12,000 to 19,000 barrels leaking a day. That would wipe out marine life deep at sea near the leak and elsewhere in the Gulf, and along hundreds of miles of coastline, said Harry Roberts, a professor of Coastal Studies at Louisiana State University.

So much crude pouring into the ocean may alter the chemistry of the sea, with unforeseeable results, said Mak Saito, an Associate Scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

All of the folks living in

All of the folks living in Gulf States should immediately start contacting their respective Governor and demand they put in place barriers to stop the oil from reaching their shores. I am so sick of spineless politicians whining and wringing their hands while their constituents suffer. They can no longer wait for nanny government in Washington DC to solve their problems. If Congress and the Federal Reserve can bail out the crooks on Wall Street then by golly they can bail out the citizens affected by the oil spill. The government can settle up with BP and the other oil companies later.

Mother Nature spills, by seepage, over 600,000 metric tonnes of oil into the GOM each year, and contributes 49% of the oil "spilled" into all oceans each year, while rig accidents spill~3%.

If this well flows into the gulf at ~25,000bpd (and it would be less on a time-weighted average) for as long as Ixtoc did, it would increase the total rig spillage into the oceans each year to around 4%.

The record usage of corexit and mud are the unknowns in the environmental toxicology equation.

No engineer, physicist, geologist or other person with expertise in wild well control ever expected this well would be killed by any means other than relief well.

The "failed" top kill actually gave us very valuable information about the state of the well itself that will be of import to the relief well efforts.

One could wonder why all the wild speculation and memes and fear mongering is occurring...and being perpetuated.

Remember the big box they built way back about 3 weeks ago

The one they lowered down over it, and it filled up with ice crystals? Ice crystals that don't appear to be any where else around down there by the way.

Remember how they were going to use it to contain the oil and then pump it out? But, the pipe froze up and they couldn't pump it out.

Then they tried to pump mud and concrete over it (without the box there) and that didn't work.

Well, why don't the dumbass's put the box back and cover the whole thing with concrete?

Because, for some devilish reason they don't want to stop it.

*May the only ones to touch your junk, be the ones you want to touch your junk.*

Christmas of what year?

Matt Simmons author of "Twilight in the Desert" suggested that the leak could last 9000 days.

Good question

I think if they can't get it fixed in conventional ways, they might try to nuke it. That brings its own set of potential problems, of course.

He's the man.

Another Queation

What ever happened with the idea to use the straw as a clean up? It can't stop the leak but it looked like it would work to assist in the recovery and protect the wetlands.

Thanks for posting this Michael.

Our government is playing

Our government is playing politics and should be called on the carpet. On the one hand Obama says he has been in charge of the accident from the beginning, on the other hand he is demonizing BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward and placing all of the blame on him. Obama can not have it both ways. Either he is in charge or not.

The governors of the Gulf States must step up and take whatever measures necessary NOW to protect our shores. There is no excuse for their inaction.

kinda like Katrina....

The governors of the States must step up and take whatever measures necessary

totally agree with your second paragraph...
