I'm a Skeptic

You'll have to forgive me if this is the wrong choice in forum to post in. I'm still fairly new to the DP. This is a discussion that is fairly important in my eyes though. Conspiracy is a subject that's often brought up on this website, and I would like to discuss it from my perspective in more in depth.

To start off, as the title of this thread suggests, I'm a skeptic. I don't have huge beef with conspiracy theorists, but I typically object to what they're saying until compelled otherwise. I'm kind of curious if there are any other RP supporting skeptics out there and what they think?

When a conspiracy theorist looks at bad things coming from the government, they claim it's all happening on purpose. That someone is behind it all pulling the strings. They have a tendency to ignore the fact that the failure comes from government being incapable in the first place. As a skeptic I'm not afraid of the government coming to "hurt me", I'm afraid of it coming to "help me." The government can't even run a school lunch program, how do you expect it to pull something off that requires precise timing and coordination? It's the biggest blundering most incompetent institution in the history of mankind. Government programs simply just don't work well most of the time.

As a scientist I cling to Occam's Razor. Conspiracy theorists often blast the media, and the mainstream story because they don't take their explanation of events seriously. The media has huge issues, and I'm not denying those. Thing is often times I find the conspiracy theorists explanation of events more complicated than the main explanation and therefore less useful. Typically an astronomical amount of people would have to be in on things
for the event in question to be executed without any whistle blowing. I'm not saying this isn't possible, just not likely.

The next issue is the lack of empirical evidence. This happens to be one of the most challenging things a conspiracy theorist has to present. Often times a conspiracy theorist has to rest his or her case on speculation. Even when that evidence is available the explanation surrounding it can differ from person to person, and then we end up back with the Occam's Razor issue. What is the most probable or likely?

Finally I ask the question, why don't the conspiracy theorists take any action against the so called conspirators? They'll point finger and complain all day long, but rarely do they actually do ANYTHING. Are the conspirators honestly that far out of "reach"? On the same note does adopting the theory actually do anything to counter the "disinformation"? I think the answer is no to both.

I have a feeling I'm probably going to get blasted right off the DP by the vast majority of you who are conspiracy "believers" here, however I am interested to see what people have to say anyway. It won't be the first time I've been blasted on the DP.

You are technically right.

That is not what you wrote (I obviously did not quote you), and I might have been off on my judgement.

My first paragraph was very much influenced by my discontent of your harsh categorization of 'conspiracy theorists' and you judging and distancing yourself from "them" when in reality skeptics and conspiracy theorists are basically both the same. I also assumed from what you wrote you'd insist that people presenting arguments for one thing or another must belong to a group, so that arguments are easier to dismiss. This is sadly the norm in our society and perhaps I did wrong as to categorize you as such.

You can relax. I didn't build

You can relax. I didn't build a sandbox, I didn't put any sand in it. I didn't draw any lines in that sand, and I've been playing on the swing set the whole time.

...

I see. So you just enjoy to f*** around with people?

You sick bastard. :D

You can still join in and play in the sandbox. Build a few sandcastles or something..!

truth liberate

thanks abraham.

this guy is an admitted jerk.
peace, brother.

mental masturbation. is that all this is for you?

I am going to have to institute a disonnect. I have been drinking and you both have "got my goat"
I also suspect that this was, and is, the whole point.
I hope you both enjoy your sandcastles, while they last.

...

I'm thinking about constructing a pyramid. And exhaust the entire sandbox on it! It'll be awesome!

truth liberate

thanks for admiting that. then what was your point in posting?

or did you even have one? except to cause problems and stir useless debate? was that your point and whole idea in posting?
I don't post much, I have far too much respect for the caliber of people here to do that.
please go...away.

Context? You and quite a few

Context? You and quite a few have openly charged that I was making some form of us vs them argument. I see plenty of accusations with nothing to back it up.

Let him be.

He's admittedly been drinking (see above) and he is now most probably sleeping, dreaming about sandcastles.

It's getting old. Some people

It's getting old. Some people want to dive into the realm of deep seated beliefs, and make things as personal as possible. That's not my intention, and never was.

Your Realm

Is Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. If fantasy land is what you want, they say 'it's a free world,' so take it. To some here, Disneyland is something to leave behind in childhood.

"Give a man a gun, and he could rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he could rob the world."

And your purpose is to

And your purpose is to provoke what? If you don't like what you see go somewhere else. I don't care what your lousy opinion is of me or anyone else here.

Well ...AntiCapitlalistAaron

It's called being exposed...Provoke? No, you did all yourself. Speaking for myself...I don't like what I see. That is....more of Bronstein's "Permanent Revolution" ...that's what I see. Our Constitution was supposedly strong enough to overcome the Overthrowers, but We Were Wrong. WW3.

"Give a man a gun, and he could rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he could rob the world."

Exposed for what? Someone

Exposed for what? Someone that doesn't have all the answers? Sure thing, I'm proud of that too.

Sure thing...

You're paid too much. But I'm sure self respect is just as important. If real history doesn't mean a damn...great, sucker the boss all you can.

"Give a man a gun, and he could rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he could rob the world."

Sure I am a skeptic.

That is why I look at presented evidence, test theories, look for evidence which is withheld, and refuse to take other peoples opinions as scientific fact.

I have been a citizen since birth for over 50 years here in the USA. The only time I can recall any governmental agent elected or otherwise, telling me the truth, it was about raising taxes or it was Ron Paul speaking.

Flip the Script

Isn't a conspiracy theorist a skeptic?

Is there not such a thing as a conspiracy?

Are you unaware of any conspiracies in history?

Your post is confusing. Please clarify.

Obviously ignored

Because you know where I will take you?

You hit the nail on the head.

I said this in a Political Science class to a professor who laughed at me for being against one- world government: "Why is it when David Rockefeller or Billy Kristol talks about the necessity of and benefits too a one-world government they are called a visionary, but when a regular citizen points out what they are saying we are 'conspiracy nuts'? We say the same thing".

U.N. Agenda 21

UN Agenda for the 21st Century: Sustainable Development $65.00

190 nations co-signed in 82 and now cities are signing on as Transitional.

Since the 70s (since we lost Nam) there have been a number of projects that surface, earth day, peak oil, permaculture, on and on, one thing folds into the other, grants for cities, states, ... transitional towns.. layer after layer.. a new world order

Georgia Headstones are not a joke.

Just curious

What particular conspiracy theories do you have the most skeptisim about? Or should that be another post?

By the way I wrote you a long reply at the end of this thread.

I caught it and I replied.

I caught it and I replied. I'm not going to really blast any specific conspiracy theories here. We have plenty of threads on the DP to discuss specifics in. If I do this is going to get blown so far into OT that it will be unsustainable.

I completely

agree with your reply.
I understand things can get too absolute. For example. My mothers maiden name was Rothschild. Is it those Rothschilds? I don't know. Would some conspiracy theorists think I am part of a conspiracy? Probably. I don't think most would. Am I Jewish? Not to my knowledge. Maybe by blood? Don't know. I was raised Baptist, but am personally not in to organized religion, yet consider myself a child of God. It would be interesting to know if I am realated to those Rothschilds. I do know my Great Grandparents came from Germany. My sister says were are from a line that was disavowed because of a marraige to a Christian woman, but no one else in the family seems to know about it. My Father says no. He is a Mason lol. He never was very involved in the "club" so knows very little about what goes on at the top. They do have those wierd initiations though. he says it is basically about being a better family man or building a better family. Hence the symbols of the carpenter tools. Oddly enough he didn't represent what they were supposed to be. He was an abusive drunk and a cheat although a good provider for 5 kids. So the Mason thing is not a definite with me and of course I wish I knew more about the Rothschilds and if I am realated (I think)No one really seems to know much about them except they are the richest people in the world and bankers. They are pretty elusive. I did a little family history research on my mothers side and ran in to dead ends when it came to the German side. Only found 1 Israel Rothschild all others were missing. A bit strange. I will likely never know. can't even find my Great grand parents. They only had my grand parents and their first born son listed and they had seven children. I found a cousin who was a sixth and eigth cousin and actually spoke with him. It was interesting and confusing. Conspiracy Theorist? Curious? Would you be?

I'm skeptical

of your unsupported presumption that your local post office cannot properly service your mail implies all other local post offices cannot properly service their customers' mail. While this may or may not be a true syllogism I see no offered proof. Am I to assume your belief is reality, constitutes a mere belief or actually is a truism?

Is it really true "ALL" conspiracies require "precise timing and coordination" to exist, happen and unfold?

What EXACTLY is a "conspiracy", "conspiracy theory" and "conspiracy believer"? Are all conspiracies, conspiracy theories and conspiracy believers exactly alike? Does a generality always and accurately depict specifics of all included within that generality?

Somehow that doesn't sound to me as a precise scientific approach to inquiry or investigation into unknowns or hypothetical probabilities.

Not really asking - just cogitating through the keyboard...

Ha

"They'll point finger and complain all day long, but rarely do they actually do ANYTHING"

You try doing a citizens arrest on Bush or Cheney after 9/11. Secret service would have you on a plane to a CIA torture chamber before you could blink.

Your premise of knowing you're going to get blasted makes me take pause, why even bring it up in the first place. The FED Banking act of 1913 was a conspiracy..

If you had half an intellect you'd notice the responses below destroy your premise that people claim conspiracy aren't going mainly on conjecture, but instead fact.

"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."
-- Thomas Jefferson

Let's pick a specific conspiracy to discuss

Your choice. Please don't make it a stupid one like no planes on 9-11 or planet x.

LOL Moon Nazis! :D

LOL Moon Nazis! :D

Speaking of Nazis; If you were around for WWII, wouldn't

You consider Project Paperclip a conspiracy? I think I would. They conspired at the highest levels to allow high-ranking Nazis into the United States to become government employees.
Then sent them to the moon to watch for annunakis. ;)

LOL No offense Mike, a lot of

LOL

No offense Mike, a lot of people here are under the impression that I don't believe in any conspiracy period. I've never stated that. It's sort of why I want to keep this unspecific. Simply to challenge the likelihood of conspiracy in the first place.

Those moon Nazi THEY'RE REAL! You don't believe in truth if you don't believe in them.;)

How is likelihood

going to help was with any particular conspiracy?
