Dollar Collapse Preparation Thread: My Low-Budget Steps + What Steps You Have Taken To Prepare?!

After following the words of Dr. Paul, Peter Schiff, Marc Faber and Jim Rodgers for a few years now, I feel that I am pretty much 100% jaded towards the near-term and medium term outlook for the United States.

I full-heartedly believe that there is going to be some sort major failure of a financial insitution, U.S. state or sovereign that will cause U.S. Treasury Bill and Bond holders to liquidate their U.S. dollar denominated assets and subsequently create a hyperinflationairy environment in the United States. Living in a hyperinflationairy environment is extremely dangerous and can include a laundry list of unthinkable dangers such as: 1) Gangs of Roaming Looters or Marauders 2) Police/Government Confiscation or Personal Removal 3) Sky-Rocketing Food and Water Prices, Shortages 4) Civil Unrest 5) Foreign Powers Sending Troops Over to Collect on Their Debt, and so many more I can't think of and won't know of until it happens to me. It is because of all of thse reason and more that I have begun to prepare myself and family for the worst.

My story is nothing special but I hope it can give someone some help in preparing themselves. I am a 22 year old Finance/Economics Major at Florida State University who works at a grocery store as a bagboy so it should be obvious that my budget is not exactly huge. I come from a somewhat well-to-do family that completely rode the decades of continuously falling interest rates to wealth and prosperity and is now suffering the needed correction for their recklessness. I have begun to turn their minds to the truth but they still cannot see the cliff in front of them (55 years of unwavering faith in Uncle Sam will do that to you). They help with some of the monetary cost of preparing.

SO FAR, I have amassed a good amount of tools, supplies and information that can and will give me the edge against others when the fated day arrives. This is a short laundry list of things I have done and plan to do in the near future. If I have forgotten anything important PLEASE DO NOT hesitate to tell me. Keep in mind I belong to a family of four adults and possibly more if times get super hard. I have no brothers and my dad is old and out of shape so the responsibiliy will be soley on me. Also remember I bought extra supplies for bardering purposes.

--------------------------------------------------------
1)FOOD AND WATER STORAGE
- Bought $250-$300 in a very wide variety of canned foods which totals up to around 400+ cans of food with expiration dates around late 2013
- Filled up two 12 gallon emergency water jugs with clean water
- These are stored in inconspicuous blue rubbermaid containers at my parents house back in Jacksonville while I keep about 50 cans of food

2)FIREARMS, AMMUNITION, AND SELF PROTECTION (In order of Purchase)
- Purchased one 9mm handgun and holster (Glock 26), For personal defense outside the home
*I have around 250 9mm rounds (.5 Hollowpoints, .5 FMJ)
- Purchased one 20 gauge shotgun, For personal defense inside the home and bigger game hunting
*I have around 150 shells, a mix of birdshot, target loads and slugs
- Purchased one SuperMark small game pellet gun. For small game hunting such as birds, rabbits and racoons.
*I have two 6000 lead pellet containers
- Purchased one Romanian AK-47 w/Bayonet. For personal defense outside the home
*No ammuntion yet
- Purchased Level IIIa Body Armor (40 S&W and down resistance)

3) FINANCIAL PREPARATIONS
- I was able to convince my parents to invest in gold- In my apartment in Tallahassee, I have around $200 cash along with around $100 in silver coins

4) HOME RELOCATION
- My parents were the poster children for the housing crisis. They built our current house in Jacksonville for the super inflated price of $700,000 back in 2005 and are now completely underwater. Back in January of this year, I convinced them to put their house up on the market while there still is a housing market. They have gotten few offers and are currently negotiating some counteroffers to the few offers we did get. I am currently trying to get them to walk away from this financial hellhole and give it back to the bank the peddled it to us. I have also got them to embrace the idea of self-sustainability and growing our own foods. They are currently looking at rural houses deeper in the Florida countryside.
- I graduate in December and will be returning back to Jacksonville to hopefully a job a the Deutsche Bank investment firm. I expect the housing market to be in even bigger shambles at that point and plan to buy a small and affordable country house to live in AT A FIXED RATE. With this fixed rate being completely eaten away by inflation, it will be quite a steal.

5) MEDICINE AND DENTAL
- 5 bottles of MultiVitamens (500 capsules per bottle)
- 2 First Aid Kits (gause, bandages, etc...)
- 4 Bottles of Medicinal Alcohol
- 10+ bottles of Nyquil/DayQuil/Pepto Bismal/Milanta

6) MISCELLANEOUS SURVIVAL TOOLS AND BARDER MATERIAL (also stored in Rubbermaid containers at home)
- 5 bottles of preservable wine (white and red)
- 3 Bottles of scotch (Johnny Walker, $25 per bottle)
- 4 Cartons of Cigarettes (2 Newport Menthol, 2 Marlboro)
- 500 batteries (AA,AAA,B,C,DD, 12v, 9v)
- 4 flashlights
- 10 containers of spice mixers ($5 containers of a variety of spices, great trading instruments)
- 100 Nails
- 1 hammer, 1 screwdriver and 2 one gallon gas cans. (This is for extraction of gas from another car's gas tank in times of crisis. Lay under the car and hammer a small hole in the gas tank of a car with the screwdriver and once the gas is flowing from under the car, collect it with the gas cans and your on your way, no siphoning required)
- 1 MapQuest directions home (Tallahassee to Jacksonville) use only back roads and that don't involve major highways
- 1 2000 page book of survival skills and tips called "When Technology Fails" by Matthew Stein. Covers everything from skinning an animal to growing your own crops.
- 2 Gas powered Lanterns
- 1 High Quality Flintstone (The kind used by Man Vs. Wild and SurvivorMan. Good for 10000 lights or 7000 fires.)
- 2 Large Cans of Lubricant/Gun Cleaner
- 30+ BIC liters
- 1 small-ish Axe

7) THINGS TO BUY
-My Personal Defense Suit (Mainly for Intimidation):
-- 1 Romanian AK-47 (BOUGHT)
-- 1 Level IIIa Body Armor (BOUGHT)
--- 4 gas masks (One for each family member, For tear gas or biological warfare)
--- 1 Kevlar Riot Helmet (For head protection and identity consealment)(BOUGHT)

---- 2 Ounces of Pot (For personal consumption, Everybody has their vice, pot is mine)
---- 8 sets of thermal underwear (4 mens, 4 womens)(BOUGHT)

Thats about all I can remember/find at this point. This list has cost me a lot of hard earned money and time but I do believe it is a good head start towards preparing my family and me for the treacherous future that lies ahead.

I was wondering if anyone else was starting to prepare or if I am just crazy. I also wanna know if I forgot anything so feel free to lemme know what I missed.

By the way things are looking so far in Washingtion, I hope what I wrote gives you a good idea of how much preparation there really is left for us to do.
--------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE 10/3/10

So I have skrimpted and saved these past couple of months and I have managed to accumulate some more nessecities for our, now obvious, impending dollar crash.

New Additions:
- 2 Story House for Parents in Jacksonville:(60% Surrounded by forest: Quiet white neighborhood 20-25 miles away from downtown Jacksonville, Fl: 360 degree security lights: 4 Windows on the second floor facing in every direction )(perfectly defensible))
- 300 Rounds of 7.62mm x 39mm for the AK47
- 1 Israel Gas Mask with 1 refill canister
- 10 weeks worth of Blood Pressure Medicine (that will be worth way WAY more than gold when everything collapses - "You want a once of gold, or do you want your father to live?"
- 2 types of Two Week Regimens of Super Strong AntiBiotics (Cipro, Bactrim) These will be essential for the sick and dying: A.K.A. Profit city
- 2 Large bottles of 30 strength Colloidal Silver for minor bacterial infections and overall health
- 4 Full pairs of Long Johns thermal underwear, one for each family member

I still need:
- Tons and tons of paper plates, bowls, and utinsels.(BOUGHT)
- Kevlar Ski Mask (Intimidation purposes and they look cool)
- Military Kevlar Helmet
- Multiple Water Filters
- Solar Power Generator
- More Canned Food
- Everything mentioned in the first post that I didn't have

UPDATE 10/11

Just won two more important items off ebay:
-ISRAELI NBC M15 GAS MASK,1 FILTER & 1 DRINKING TUBE ($35)
-SMITH AND WESSON Riot Helmet with Visor ($15)

NEXT MONTH: I plan on purchasing one or two more filters for the mask and either a Berkey or Katadyn water filter. I have a stagnant creek behind my house that is a perfect source of water as long as it is filtered.

I also need to purchase a ton of paper plates/bowls and utensils.

UPDATE 10/15

PURCHASED
- Katadyn Vairo Water Filter Dual Technology Microfilter
- 200 Paper Plates
- 200 Paper Bowls
- 150 Plastic Utensils

THINGS TO BUY
- Decoy Safe
- 3 Gas Masks
- 4 Gas mask canister refills
- 2 Replacement water filters
- Solar Cooker
- 1000+ 20 gauge Shotgun Shells/9mm rounds/7.62x39mm Shells
- 7 Window Bar Sets
- 2 Security Doors (Bullet/Smash proof, Front and back door)

I purchased a Katadyn Vairo Water Filter Dual Technology Microfilter off of Ebay. It is good for up to 500 gallons of pure water before it needs filter replacement. I plan to have atleast two replacement filters, giving me a total of 1500 gallons of fresh water before I need to find a new way to get water.

I also picked up some paper plates and utensils. When the water is off, those ceramic plates and bowls will be getting pretty grimey after a while.

Overall this is going to be an expensive quest, but I can assure you it will be even more expensive in the near future.

Anybody got any more suggestions? Lets keep this thread going.

UPDATE: 3/23/11

So I have made a decent amount of progress since I last updated.

Bought:
- 15 Sets of Plastic Silverware and Paper Plates (100 per set)
- Small Decoy safe is poorly hidden and that will keep only 10% of my familys gold/silver/cash holdings
- Another $2000 in silver (27 an oz) and $1000 in gold (1350 an oz)
- A siphon for extracting gas from abandon or unprotected cars
- Ski masks-1 Green, 1 black
- Katadyn Combi Waterfilter (Good for 15,000 gallons of water)
- Full Camoflage outfit (hat, jacket, shirt, pants boots)
- Additions: 200 rounds of 20 gauge bird shot, 50 Rrounds of 12 gauge slugs, 600 rounds of 7.62x39mm, 200 rounds of .38, 50 rounds of 30-06, 50 rounds of 380, 100 rounds of 9mm FMJ
- A CB radio
- 60 Rolls of Toilet Paper (15 for each family member)

Need:
- Potassium Iodine tablets
- Working on getting a new rural house for about 100k.
- MORE FOOD
- Portable toilet/shower
- More TP
- Feminine Products (Gross)

Feel welcome to post your suggestions or your preparations.

Very impressive

Nice list. I am glad I wouldn't have to brave that cold up there.

Good idea on the paper plates and utensils. I am adding that to my list of buys.

I like everything

except the fact that you are going to work for Deutsche Bank, I think they are part of the problem, and if you go work for them you will have to do their bidding. Better to go work for a credit union. Thats all.

I sorta like the idea of...

working for and getting cozy with the enemy. Oddly enough, as much as a hate cabal of banksters that rule the country, I am looking forward to working for them. I'd love to get a good perspective of how it works from the inside. Maybe one day I can be in charge of investing and go completely Peter Schiff on their asses.

Its also a good paying job (40k + benefits), in my home town (J-Ville), the job title makes girls panties drop, and is a German bank with branches all over the world. Its overall fundamentals compared to Goldman and J.P. are good and if things go right I can transfer abroad to Australia or China.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I took a nap after starting this thread and woke up to a ton of help. Thanks guys.

The main things I got from the posts so far was water filtration and wine.

I think these are good ideas. I haven't done much research on a water filtration system but I am certainly going to start. It is definitely heavily covered in my 2000 page Survival book. The collodial silver is another good idea that I am somewhat familiar with.

The wine thing is a good idea for bartering purposes but personally I am not the biggest wine fan. This topic is also covered in my book.

While I have tons of good ideas and am getting more with the help of this thread, I have several near term problems that I must take into account.

PROBLEMS
1) The first problem is that I live in a college size one bedroom apartment. I have very limited space that is very near full capacity.
2) I drive an RSX type S which is a very small 2 coupe. I have very little room in my car to transport goods and it would take me multiple trips to ship all of my supplies home. If the dollar crisis happens before December I could be in a squeeze.
3) My parents are moving whether we sell the house or not so I have to keep in mind that I can't begin to really set my roots down until my parents and I both find a couple of nice rural places to begin our self sustainability.

Keep the ideas coming guys. Also If anybody else has started to prepare feel free to shout out what you've done

Lots of good information

here. Thanks for posting.

Just off the top of my head

and without a lot of deep thought
how about some grains? You have lots of canned foods, you need bags of rice, pasta, wheat, flour, sugar, dehydrated potatoes. Do you have your heirloom seeds? You are in a good position to grow down there in Jacksonville. You have 10 packs, is that enough? And is there a good variety?

Also, I think you need a lot more water and some purification methods.

Meds: Get lots of Benadryl, good for lots of things, allergic reactions, it can also act as a sleeping pill if needed, if you need to knock someone out for a few hours or for yourself if you cannot get some sleep.

And the pot. You need a lot more for bartering purposes. And the wine. Forget the bottles. get the 5l boxes, lots of them. They last forever, easier to transport, glass won't break. Those cigarettes won't stay fresh long, put them in the freezer now.

Clothing: Ponchos (especially in FL), lots of extra underwear (what if you can't change clothes for weeks, at least a change of undies is nice) Baby wipes can be used multi-purpose if you can't shower for weeks. Nice for cleaning hands AND butts!

Also, I have a huge supply of coffee cans filled with leftover cooking oil, everytime I cook I drain into the cans and add paper towels for firestarter. Starts a fire quick and easy. AND I have bags of dryer lint tucked away for firestarter as well. We have the flint firestarters but for quick home use, try the above.

Just off the top of my head..........

Colchester, New London County, Connecticut

I decided on a survival retreat,

someplace with lots of water, year-round growing season, sparse population, comfortable temperatures, where I can build without having to deal with a local building department, and where the land is inexpensive, less than $250 an acre: ECUADOR.

I paid $5,500 for about 25 acres at about 6,500 ft. elevation that has a stream running through it and good rainfall, temps 60 - 80 degrees F, no tropical diseases or poisonous snakes.

I'm hoping to move a bunch of stuff down there in a shipping container but if I need to flee with the clothes on my back, I'm ready. If I should be trapped here, I have several years' food stored in several locations and many other survival preps in place.

New Hampshire and Ecuador.

Some ideas

First of all you've done a solid job to get where you're at now. You're waaay better prepared than me in most ways. I'm just now registering for a firearm license and I don't have any food stores to speak of. But I have to agree with two of the ideas mentioned below: water filters and wine. Water filters because a) you should be drinking clean fluoride free water right now and always, and b) a good water filter can remove nearly 100% of toxins and gives you much much better portability and replenishment versus stored jugs. I've got a large Berkey and I'm very pleased with it. LL mentioned wine. This is an excellent idea as certain wine (like Bordeaux) can be stored for decades and it can actually get BETTER over time. Excellent for special occasions and/or for barter when the SHTF whichever comes first. My parents have a big wine cellar so they'll never starve! Lastly, have you thought about air filtration? I have 2: a Rabbit 700A and an IQAir GC MultiGas. I live in NJ which is a chemical megaplex of refineries and everything else. If they can't cap an underwater well head for months... Just saying, if trusting the gov't to keep the air clean seems like a bad bet having a way to do something about it seems prudent to me.

I have to plead ignorance....

...if they "collapse the dollar"; won't they just replace our current "coin of the realm" with another one?

Either the Amero, or some concocted IMF debt note that the United States will have 20% of the say as to who gets permission to use this new fiat currency, and who doesn't?

I do not believe we will be turning in gold and silver coins for sundry items ... we'll HAVE to give them back to get more debt notes so we can buy and sell again ... and then the cycle will happen all over again ... those with the gold will make all the rules, let us buy some, manipulate the price; sell it back to us at a nice profit while we are scared and have no faith in the fiat currency; and then and buy it all back again when they replace the fiat currency with another one!

I'm sorry! I did take the advice of my DP friends here, and I bought a $50.00 can of Emergency Essentials non-hybrid seeds that'll yield two football fieldf of vegetables if this happens as a DOOMSDAY scenario ... but I am still open to the mindset of the "wealthy conservatives" who only dislike Dr. Paul because they look at politics like a sporting event; who say, the whole world is run on credit - and gold is but a commodity like oil is - so, if I need some fiat currency to buy gas or milk or bread, that is what I need; and whatever I have to do to get fiat currency I will have to do ... even if it means harvesting seeds from my emergency garden and selling them.

Sometimes we get real paranoid, and ready for a civil war; when it may be as simple as run for precinct delegate and REPLACE these bastards with great fervor and determination ASAP!

I plead ignorance on the gold-backed currency thing in this global economy...Michigan is in debt to the Federal Government...and the Federal Government is "owned" by Foreign Banksters...so, the borrower is servant to the lender; and we have to decrease the size of government NOT so we can PROSPER, but so we can produce and get out from UNDER debt ... is that reasonable?

Giving the middle finger to those who gave us money when the politicians asked for it, is something we might want to slow down and think about; now, giving the middle finger to establishment career politicians who didn't pay our bills(and bouncing them from office), but borrowed and spent more unwisely - that I am in FAVOR OF!

Be gentle with me...learning curve!

Get some solar power

Solar powered battery chargers, and of course rechargeable batteries...
Solar Oven, I hear this work awesome. You can get plans and make your own from online instructions. No need for heat to heat or bake your food, just solar energy.
Also get something to preserve that water. You can get some water preservation drops and I think I remember someone saying here that their grandparents used to toss all silver coins into their water. But I'd look into the drops too.
You also might want to consider some kind of anti-bacterial like Grapefruit Seed Extract or Food grade Hydrogen Peroxide. (be careful with this it can burn if splashed or sprayed, must be diluted!)
Make sure to keep some kind of garlic or Oil of Oregano on hand as well. Taken daily this can ward off illness.

If you can learn how to can, this will give you some better nutrition, than canned food from the store. You can, can some great vegetables, fruit, meat etc.

Get a good nature's pharmacy book. When you run out of pills, this is gonna be the way you need to go. Actually, I use a lot of natural therapy now as opposed to pills. It has saved me money in doctor's visits and prescriptions, and abuse on my gut.

Also a couple of large gallons of vinegar. Vinegar has many good uses, get all of them online and print them off, so you'll have it when you need it.

2-ply toilet paper, good herbal soap and candles

razors ( hey, rowdowers! :-) I didn't forget!), long lasting lipstick, water proof mascara that does not clump ..oh yes, of course there are the guns, gold, silver, food, water, shelter, heritage seeds, pemmican, catapault, longbow, booby traps, down pillow and comforter, the stained glass dragonfly lamp..the computer..the hot tub..the remote control...

Okay, I see I need to make a priority list AGAIN!

Just ramblin!
See ya around..I need to sign off and make my list!! ;-)

booby traps--

I want to talk about this!

It's possible to defend without . . . guns--

I hope . . .

I'm not saying whether or not we have a gun--

I get creepy crawlie feelings talking about it--

we've suspected we're being watched lately.

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

Booby Traps are underestimated IMO!

A good perimeter defense is important! I have years of interest /love /experience for great booby trap ideas since I was a kid!!

I admit sometimes I have used this (@@) kind of booby trap..( thats me squishing my boobs together to create cleaveage) lol!

Seriously, booby traps are a great/easy defense and I am going to use them on my property!

Gawd..I'm so bad and I think misunderstood

You left out the "wooden statue".....8)

You never know when you might need some extra WOOD!!!

What should we call it? The "JPS"?

Those dang party threads. We are going to have to correspond and clear this misunderstanding up. I don't like bein' called a liar.

I digress.

Jefferson~Please consider putting me in your will?

Will me the JPS and I in turn will... will you the BHWJMSAPWC ( Big Headed Wise Jamaican Man Smoking A Pipe Wood Carving) I think the carvings may be proportional. I'm serious!

PS. Are you anywhere near Toledo Bend? I would love to go bass fishing there again!

Water.

When I empty a container of any kind, I fill it with water and label it as such and put it in the garage. The water in the laundry detergent containers can come in handy for washing hands, etc. Juice bottles, liquor bottles etc. will be fine to drink.
This doesn't cost a thing, and can't hurt a thing! If nothing bad happens, I can water the plants and wash the car!

how cold does it get in northern Florida?

you might want some blankets--

I know you don't have the bitter winter issues some of us who live in the north have, but blankets are always good--

also, don't forget things like soap (hand, liquid and bar--and washing soap), shampoos, etc.

Being dirty can become debilitating when people have been accustomed to being clean. Under emergency circumstances it may be impossible to be clean, but knowing that, at some point, hands can be washed, can help--

canned goods can be good, but canning processes aren't always the most healthy way to go. Too much salt, etc.--

The big advantage to canned goods is that they are quickly edible!

But some dry foods might store a bit longer. Over a decade ago we invested in some MRE type foods (actually meals that were prepared for hiking); we were concerned that they had outlasted their shelf life, so we prepared them and ate them, and they were delicious! Now we just have to replace them!

Invest in some grains (put them in hard buckets or cans) and legumes--

store some chocolate or other 'treats'--

Also, if/where you have a bit of extra space . . .

some good books . . .

God bless you!

We've been working to prepare for decades; spouse and I 'woke up' literally decades ago. Finding Ron Paul was just a nice follow-up--:)

and we are not 'arrived'. We work very hard on it. We are still in town (small town), and we have a mortgage (small mortgage, less than rent for a similar dwelling)--

the idea of 'perfection' is daunting and not helpful. Do your best and trust in God. All right, maybe you don't believe in God; trust in providence, then!

:)

Also, build bridges with neighbors and friends and community members. Support local commerce, especially farmers.

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

Gerald Celente: 'This isn't reform, its depression'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWaL3iyaUdg&playnext_from=TL&...

RTAmerica | July 21, 2010

Earlier today US President Barack Obama signed a bill that is the most comprehensive financial law to be enacted since the Great Depression. The law, which got final approval from the Senate last week, targets the kind of Wall Street risk-taking that helped trigger a global financial meltdown in 2007-2009. Gerald Celente says that this is only going to harm and will not do enough to change Wall Street.

"Give a man a gun, and he could rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he could rob the world."

You are waaaay better prepared than I am.

Good job!

I disagree with one thing...

Pot is not a vice.

I started a storable food thread a while back

and got some great information for dry long term storables. Beans, Wheat, Rice, Pasta, Powdered milk, Oats etc.

AK4RP, or AKAK gave the best info as far as food.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints is big into preparation for hard times, and they have their own networks of food warehouses across the country, We had to drive down to San Antonio to get ours, but it was well worth the research and the trip.

As far as ammo: Ammoman.com and "centerfire systems" has the best deals I have seen for AK.
Try and get rid of that 20 gauge and get a 12. Preferrably a Russian Saiga 12 (approx 500 bucks). You can get a 20 round drum, or 12 round magazines for them. Nothing says you're not interested like a wall of buckshot coming at you...8)

If anything get rid of that birdshot. You want 00 or 000 buck for self defense. If you're goin after birds then that is another thing.

As others have mentioned, get a water filter. I got the biggest one Berkey makes. You never know which numbskull family member who originally laughed at you will be needing to share water.

How much did you spend on the body armor?

180 bucks

I got it when the gun show came to town. It was orgininally 220 but I got the guy to go down. It includes chest, back, and shouldler plates. I got the AK-47 the same weekend and Flintstone the same weekend
