The Propaganda War that Took Us Down, and the Bankers Up, Up and Away

The Most Damaging Propaganda Campaign in History. And its Aimed at You and Me

When I think of the most insidious propagandists in history, Joseph Goebbels certainly comes to mind.

Goebbles became Adolph Hitler’s propaganda minister in 1933, and from then until his death by suicide in 1945, he had absolute power over all German radio, press, cinema, and theater. Goebbels used the media to instill the idea that Germany’s leader was a veritable god, and that Germany’s destiny was to rule the world. His most virulent propaganda, it should go without saying, was used against the Jews… so, I guess one could say, very well done there.

Goebbels had rules that he followed... precepts that had to be adhered to in order to create an effective propaganda campaign. Some of those rules included:

* Propaganda must be carefully timed, reaching its audience ahead of competing propaganda.
* Propaganda must have a theme that must be repeated over and over.
* Propaganda must label events and people with distinctive phrases or slogans.
* Propaganda must evoke the interest of the audience.
* Propaganda must diminish anxiety.
* Propaganda must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium.

Look, this guy may have been a murdering, genocidal lunatic, but no one ever accused him of incompetence; Joseph Goebbels was very good at his job.

As Americans we like to think that this country doesn’t tolerate such propagandists. We like to think that they only exist in history books, or perhaps in less sophisticated countries. Oh sure, we’ve got them in the advertising agencies of Madison Avenue, but if they get out of line, our government steps in and says no.

Well, as it turns out we’re wrong about the use of propaganda in this country, dead wrong. In fact, we the people of this country have been the target of the most insidious and pervasive form of propaganda, non-stop, and for the last 30 years. And, perhaps the worst part is that our government has been complicit in allowing it to continue because, at least in part, our government has been a beneficiary of what it has accomplished.

The propaganda campaign might be referred to in any or all of the following ways:

Debt is a status symbol… debt is a sign of success… debt is cool… you should want as much debt as you can get… being approved for more debt means you’ve made it.

Look at that handsome man getting out of that expensive car with that beautiful girl by his side... look... he’s paying for dinner with his striking sign of success… his GOLD Visa Card. Oh, he’s getting some tonight, for sure.

And how about... Rescue a Puppy... $22. Puppy’s bowl... $8. Pictures of your baby with the puppy... Priceless. Some things money can’t buy. For everything else there’s MasterCard. Look at the puppies and the baby... awwwww... how cute!

The fact is that you can’t get through an hour of your day without being exposed to very sophisticated advertising that is designed to position debt as s status symbol... something to be desired... to aspire to.

I want to be a gold debtor... I want to be a platinum debtor... how about a silver card? Can I be a titanium debtor? I’d like to see something in a palladium card. Why not become an emerald debtor, or perhaps a sapphire debtor? I want the Purple Card... can I have the purple card, please? Wait… I love to Discover! I want to be a “Member”. I want privileges.

I don't know your disposition toward Jews

so when you write, "His most virulent propaganda, it should go without saying, was used against the Jews… so, I guess one could say, very well done there," it leads me to wonder if you are saying that Jews were a deserving target.

New Hampshire and Ecuador.

As long as you know this is

As long as you know this is propaganda and educate others of this that is all you can do. Knowing about it changes the message.

"Human beings with love and compassion are some of the most beautiful creatures in the universe... Those without are a plague on us all."

who can you blame?

All these are true and so now do you blame the banker? The tempter? Sure, they tempted you, sure they cheated you and played you for sucker. But whose fault is that? They did not FORCE us to use credit cards, do they? They haven't pass into laws that we all have to purchase everything with credit cards, have they? (I think it's coming soon, though). So whose fault is it that you want to live beyond your means? If you have no lust, how can they tempt you? If you have no desire for things, a credit card would not hurt at all. If you pay off monthly balances every month (that's what I do) you would never pay a cent in interest. So after all, we have to realize that we are the only ones to blame if we are in credit card debt.

hmmm . . .

there are plenty of *us* who didn't buy into the credit debt who are struggling now along with the credit debtors--

it has affected everyone by now--

no credit card debt; low mortgage, about 75% more self-reliant than the average American, hard working (and employed), and we are trudging through mud.

"The majority of people lead their existence within a small idyllic circle bounded by their family, their home, and their work... They live in a secure realm somewhere between good and evil. Rescue a puppy?

$22? Where, I want to rescue more puppies, it's closer to 250 or 300 here in CT.
I know this is an aside to the monologue above, BUT. For $22 I would rescue a hell of alot of pups.

just like Gibson, Brando, Jackson and on and on it goes for anyone who dares to break ranks. Go to any public library and do a search on the "holocaust" an you will get thousands of books to chose from. Then search the USS Liberty and you will be lucky to get one.

Television sitcoms portray white middle class persons,

especially men, portrayed as confused and violent and sexually perverted.
Prime time advertising is for fast food and political message.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

Not always.

The rest of the time, white middle class men are characterized as boobs and simpletons, without any brains, talents, or merits. They usually rely on some female or minority to "save the day" because they are incapable of doing anything themselves(except perhaps some evil, or getting in the way).

Everyone has seen this as pervasive for years.
"Only whites can be racist".
"Bunch of angry old white men".

It IS programming.

Racists are everywhere

And to tell you the truth, I think there are more racists in Asia and Africa and especially Middle East now than all the white racists. We can see that just by looking at how they treat each other and how they treat people different from them. If you know the working conditions of foreign workers in Dubai, it's beyond slavery.

Very important post!

These are important points to bring up. Goebbels is a good example to cite, but other Leftist regimes and movements have excelled at effective dissemination and propaganda no less than their German National Socialist cousins. The Frankfurt School with their "neo-Freudian Marxist" tactics, the Fabian Socialists, Edward Bernays (from whom Goebbels learned some of his methods!)

We on the Right have been lacking here--a major cause of our failures. The Left knows how to create and exploit words and symbols, iconic imagery, that appeal strongly to the emotions. Think of all the "Che" shirts and paraphernalia we've seen, for instance. And the images put forth to evoke sympathy for the downtrodden, etc. (as if they really care.)

We need to think about this a lot more. If we can't compete effectively in getting our message out in a way that can easily be grasped by large of numbers of people, we will lose this struggle no matter how correct our positions are.

".. No Time For _Fiddling_..."

... Then, again, sometimes you just need to make time.

"loves are like empires: when the idea they are founded on crumbles, they, too, fade away."
— Milan Kundera (The Unbearable Lightness of Being)

I don't know if this is what you and Herr Goebbels had in mind, but somehow I think Milan Kundera might think it sheds light on Kitsch that can bring a tear to your eye.

Now that I have your attention .....

Can you discern the subtle political message to this technique?

... or is graphic obscenity explicitly displayed more to the taste of conservative community standards?

moderators and Michael decide

based on importance and not on the number of views or comments.

We keep away popular posts that are controvercial and the ones creating division.

Just look over the front pages from the last few weeks and you can see which kind of posts are chosen.
Mostly it is what Michael sees as worthy.
I often bump some good posts when he is online so that he can see them and choose to add it to the front page.

FTC Issues Final Rule to Protect Consumers in Credit Card Debt

Amendments to Telemarketing Sales Rule Prohibiting Debt Relief Companies From Collecting Advance Fees Will Take Effect in October 2010
Starting on October 27, 2010, for-profit companies that sell debt relief services over the telephone may no longer charge a fee before they settle or reduce a customer’s credit card or other unsecured debt.

“At the FTC we strive every day to make sure America’s middle class families get straight deals for their dollars,” Chairman Jon Leibowitz said. “This rule will stop companies who offer consumers false promises of reducing credit card debts by half or more in exchange for large, up-front fees. Too many of these companies pick the last dollar out of consumers’ pockets – and far from leaving them better off, push them deeper into debt, even bankruptcy.”

Three other Telemarketing Sales Rule provisions to take effect on September 27, 2010, will:

require debt relief companies to make specific disclosures to consumers;
prohibit them from making misrepresentations; an
extend the Telemarketing Sales Rule to cover calls consumers make to these firms in response to debt relief advertising.
The Final Rule covers telemarketers of for-profit debt relief services, including credit counseling, debt settlement, and debt negotiation services. The Final Rule does not cover nonprofit firms, but does cover companies that falsely claim nonprofit status. Over the past decade, the FTC and state enforcers have brought a combined 259 cases to stop deceptive and abusive practices by debt relief providers that have targeted consumers in financial distress.

Advance Fee Ban

The Final Rule contains specific requirements for debt relief providers related to charging an advance fee before providing any services. It specifies that fees for debt relief services may not be collected until:

the debt relief service successfully renegotiates, settles, reduces, or otherwise changes the terms of at least one of the consumer’s debts;
there is a written settlement agreement, debt management plan, or other agreement between the consumer and the creditor, and the consumer has agreed to it; and
the consumer has made at least one payment to the creditor as a result of the agreement negotiated by the debt relief provider.
To ensure that debt relief providers do not front-load their fees if a consumer has enrolled multiple debts in one debt relief program, the Final Rule specifies how debt relief providers can collect their fee for each settled debt. First, the provider’s fee for a single debt must be in proportion to the total fee that would be charged if all of the debts had been settled. Alternatively, if the provider bases its fee on the percentage of what the consumer saves as result of using its services, the percentage charged must be the same for each of the consumer’s debts.

Protect consumers?

How you can protect someone from their own lusts? It's people's own desire for things they cannot afford that did them in. How you can protect people from being foolish? You can't, unless you take away people's freedom, and then we are all being treated as subjects/children, well protected, but no freedom and no choice.

financial slavery (and tending from there to all other forms) never sounded so good...or I mean bad...no good...no bad...

Assert Your Authority

Try shredding 4 years worth of mail

I've always had a problem opening mail. The problem being I don't like doing it and generally speaking I don't do it. Just because someone sends you a piece of mail doesn't mean you have to open it. All of my bills are set to be paid automatically except credit card which rarely has a balance. So I had let my mail build up for 4 years because I never really felt OK with throwing it in the garbage or recycling. By one method or another every few years I destroy all of my old mail. There's so much personal information someone could use to cause trouble: credit applications pre-filled with personal info, medial bills, financial statements, on and on...

So I bought a shredder. Since it was a huge amount of mail I wanted a real heavy duty one. So I bought one government surplus. You know the government doesn't skimp when it comes to keeping secrets from the people. I got a $1,500+ HSM 125.2 HS Level 6 for $350. Your tax dollars at work. This thing grinds paper into unreconstructable dust. I fed paper into this thing for hours and hours and it didn't even get warm. Problem solved.

So 4 years worth of mail. There were probably 5,000 applications for credit and credit cards. The amount of offers is unbelievable. The ones that really bothered me about tossing away: blank checks with my name already filled out. Just go spend yourself stupid! I bet half the trees killed to make paper are used to send out credit offers.

Thanks for posting.
