"Why shouldn't I vote for Mike Huckabee?"

The disturbing poll results from Iowa...
...started me thinking.
I need help.

Imagine you are here at ground zero, Iowa caucus land.

You are a conservative Republican, hate abortion and illegal immigration, you feel frustrated by the huge federal deficits and activist judges who just overturned the gay marriage ban. You're probably an evangelical christian. You really despise Obama, but haven't connected the dots to see that he and Bush are blood brothers.
You tell me you aren't sure who you should support for president in 2012 but still kind of like that Huckabee guy.

What should I tell you?
What should I ask you?
Where should I start?

I know I'm going to throw in a pitch for Ron Paul and the C4L.
But it would be nice if I could take some shots at Huckabee and saying "Because he's a scumbag!" or "He doesn't support medical marijuana." isn't going to go very far.

What do I say?

CATO vs. Mike

He is with the global warming crowd as well. This tells it all imo.

He says it is "a biblical duty" to pass more regulation to fight global warming.

Good nite lol

p.s. great find on that flyer btw.

Good thought experiment.

You need to blow some minds. Half measures really won't do that.

Avoid the temptation to impose your own standards of what is "important" or "trivial" on each voter.

Take the time to find out what their number one political beef is and speak directly to that issue from Ron Paul's position.

Listen, listen listen,

Listen, listen listen, correct.

10-15 million more voters need to believe in non-interventionism (liberty) at home and abroad to change America. Minds changed on Syria. Minds changing on privacy. "Printing money" is part of the dialogue. Win minds through focus, strategy.

Huckabee is a Socialist. If

Huckabee is a Socialist.

If one is serious about being a fiscal conservative, then that person has a responsibility in knowing the voting records of the person they wish to represent their voice. I am always surprised how many Republicans support people like Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, & John McCain and not even know how these people vote. When people take responsibility in their choices and they have a true conviction towards ensuring that their representative is truly in their corner, then they must abstain from voting for anyone other than Ron Paul and those who stand upon a foundation of integrity, principle, and will not waver or be bought by the bankers, special interests, and the political whims of populism.

It is rather simple for me to know who stands for liberty. When American stops letting themselves being manipulated, they will see the value of people like Ron Paul who truly represents freedom and liberty for all.

Thanks for the great responses.

My day job calls but I will try to respond to each.

The Virtual Conspiracy

Two reasons

1) he's a career politician

2) once a neocon always a neocon

We've had 2 Bush administrations, we don't need a third.

Pretty simple, really.

Just inform the person that Ron Paul is ardently pro-life,
against illegal immigration or amnesty, the top deficit-hawk in Congress and he has a real plan for the economy, and was a supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act. And Ron is a Christian.
That handles every one of the issues you listed.
And RP opposes Obamacare, and the bailouts.

On top of that Ron is MUCH more astute in matters of economy and the Constitution, and is significantly better in his advocacy of minimal gov't. RP wants to end the FED and the IRS, as well as many other programs, and Huckabee is "Fair Tax" guy.

So, there are no advantages Huckabee has over RP, but there are many advantages RP has over Huckabee.

Use the Constitution

Tell the yeah Mike is great on the 2nd Amendment, he sucks on the 4th, 5th and 10th.

Using the Fourth Amendment

Using the Fourth Amendment won't work with the republicans in Iowa. They love the Patriot Act. They even like national ID cards. One doctor in my town persuaded the group that all this fuss about the national ID card sounded pretty Orwellian to him. All in all, they're a group pretty proud of their self righteousness. They have no curiosity or any desire to stray from the republican establishment party line.

At the same time, the recent success with the final Iowa GOP platform took me completely by surprise. I still can't believe how great it was. That those people who took that poll could be the same group that voted for that inspired platform is beyond my comprehension.

Good luck Spacehabits.

Good points!

I'll use that.

The Virtual Conspiracy

Point out...

that while it is now in vogue for politicians to tout the constitution, when was Hucklebee ever critical of Bush's trampling of the constitution. (Have defensible examples ready.) Ron Paul touted it when do so wasn't even cool.

And remind them that Obama

This is like asking

Why shouldn't I bob for french fries?

Aside from the list of 8 million reasons why not to vote for him, his son is a creep that helped hang a stray dog , and torture it to death with a knife.

(Miller County, Arkansas) Two boy scout counselors, 17 year old Clayton Frady and 18 year old David litickabee [sic], the son of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, have admitted to catching a stray dog during their summer session at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, AR, and hanging the dog by his neck, slitting his throat and stoning him to death.

“Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians” for 2007

Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record.

According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.”

What was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.

Regarding Palin: I believe we are watching in real time the rise of the third party, which will be controlled by the powers that be from its' inception.

Show them that his anti-big government, and lowering taxes rhetoric is nothing more than "say anything to win" politician's double speak.

Good video of him begging for taxes (prior to his hushed up gastric bypass surgery :-)).

The Fox News Pundit

He will legislate morality

He will legislate morality

Yeah, I know...

Unfortunately too many of my fellow Iowans are OK with that.
The NeoCons are always "good" on the social conservative issues.
That's how they keep the religious right hooked.

The Virtual Conspiracy

You shall know them...

by their deeds...

He is a corrupt lying politician at worst and a mediocre bass player at best.

I would say..

he is a hard core socialist incapable of independent thought and totally dependent on special interests. See his questionable ethics violations. He is un-American and does not grasp the fundamental concepts of the foundations of America. Plus, is he reallly a pastor? Some inaccuracies were revealed last cyle regarding his post high school education.

Would you hire him?

Good points...

In a conversation with one of the Iowa C4L leaders, a prominent Iowa GOP figure and head of a religious right coalition said "I guess he's nothing but a socialist" concerning Huckabee.
I'll have to find out more details about what prompted that remark.
I wish he would go on record with that here.
The news hasn't filtered to the grassroots.

OMG. Is this really here?

OMG. Is this really here? This man is one of the biggest crooks you could imagine. He is VERY charismatic. When I first met him I was really impressed! He puts out a front that makes you like him right away. He lied to my face. He also was one of the VERY few governors to make it onto Judicialwatch.com's MOST Corrupt Politician list, in 2008. There were so many reasons for this I can hardly remember. I believe he was indicted 17 times in this state while governor for horrible deeds (a few I could enumerate, but pretty much all about stealing. The man (get this) put up a wedding registry so people could "donate" money to his revows of marraige thing so he could funnel himself funds, I kid you not. Always he kept his charisma and aplomb and many in the state thought he was just being persecuted unjustly because of all of his "Christian" talk (and because they are Arkansans, after all). When he left office here he smashed ALL of the computer harddrives in his office which all had to be replaced with the taxpayers money. Look him up. He is the WORST, and I have personal experience of it, as well. HUCKABEE IS HORRIBLE. If there ever ever was an anti-christ contest, he would have Obama beat.

Thanks cricket,...

Huck is surprisingly like Clinton isn't he?
(Personable, but corrupt and a complete sociopath.)
Maybe I should make the comparison?

The Virtual Conspiracy

He's a warmonger and doesn't see how that effects the economy

Explain that the ongoing wars are a huge part of why we are having economic troubles at home, and Huckabee is clueless. I would focus on his economic shortcomings, because if the people you are pitching to are on the same moral page as Huckabee, then they probably also believe "if we don't fight them over there, we will be fighting them in the streets here." That's why you should enlighten them on his lack of economic knowledge. If you can convince them he doesn't knbow how to "fix" the economy then maybe they will come around to another way of thinking.
When it involves people's pocket book, they start to listen.

I'd rather have a bottle in front o' me than a frontal lobotomy

Economics SHOULD be his Achilles heel...

because he has never been strong on deficits or fiscal conservative issues.

He has been right there with the "Invite the World, Invade the World" Neocon policies.

Forcing the GOP Tea Partiers to recognize the connection between our insane interventionist military/foreign policy and our of control deficits is our highest priority and greatest challenge.

Huckabee as a Governor?

Huckabee's Economic Evasiveness

The ad shows a graphic asserting that Huckabee "cut taxes over 90 times" as governor. As we've noted previously, 90 tax cuts indeed were enacted under Huckabee. However, so were 21 tax increases, and they far outweighed the cuts.

The total net tax increase under Huckabee was an estimated $505.1 million, according to the state Department of Finance and Administration's Whitney McLaughlin, who says that the figure has been adjusted for inflation.

Not surprisingly, anti-tax groups give Huckabee poor marks. The conservative Club for Growth, for example, ran an ad in December attacking him, using old video of the then-governor appealing to the state Legislature to raise taxes. “Mike Huckabee is telling folks that he cut taxes 94 times, but the truth is, Huckabee’s tax increases far surpassed his tax cuts, and taxpayers deserve to know the truth,” said Pat Toomey, the group's president, in a statement when the ad was released.

Huckabee's ad also boasts that he "balanced the budget every year" he was governor, but that's not much to crow about. Like other governors, he must balance the state budget by law.
