I just find this weird
When the BP rig blew in April, in the same week, in Alaska a BP oil pipe-line burst and sabotage was suspected....we never heard much about it. This week this other rig blows and meanwhile I get a video in my youtube (that is no longer findable) that said something "oil-spillish" happened in Canada yesterday too. Does anyone have confirmation on Canada? I simply cannot find a shred of info about it. It did not seem like a mistake, the fellow was from Glasgow and was showing the article on screen.

Very different situations....
The Horizon was an exploration rig, actively drilling into high pressure formations. It had a "blow out".
This rig today was a production platform, not a drilling rig. BIG difference, the flow is very controlled and has been for a long time. This rig did not "blow up", or blow out, I think it was a fire that got out of control, NOT uncontrolled flow from the well that caught fire.
As was mentioned, fires happen, was on a rig myself recently that caught fire, but was fortunately controlled before doing damage.
The media want this to be a disaster too, don't fall for it!

It's a breaking news item. Mariner (rig owner) has shut down the production..said they were producing 1400 BPD as of last week in August (see below.) Glad that most workers were not hurt...only one injured out of twelve.

I was fishing in the Gulf yesterday near the 17 mile riggs south
of the Matagorda jetties. I definitely head someone fart on one of those riggs, however I did not report it to the MSN or the Coast Guard.

Per Rig Owner Mariner: production last week of August
Mariner tells CNN that, at this point, a fly-over seems to indicate there is no oil leakage:
Mariner Energy, owner of the production platform, said in a press release that no hydrocarbon spill has been reported after an initial flyover of the incident.
"Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident," the statement said. "The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken.
During the last week of August 2010, production from this facility averaged approximately 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate."
Bobby Jindal will hold a press conference on the incident at 1:30 p.m.
The Coast Guard is reporting an oil sheen near the site of the oil fire:A mile-long oil sheen spread Thursday from an offshore petroleum platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP's massive spill.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said the sheen, about 100 feet wide, was spotted near the platform owned by Houston-basedMariner Energy Inc.

I heard reports of sandblasting & painting on the platform. No drilling, no production going on. Fires happen, hence the existence of fire departments. It's no different offshore, though they've got to be more careful out there, of course, but accidents happen.
This has nothing to do with drilling & exploration. This moratorium should be ended sooner than later.

Like JKM mentioned below, these things happen on and offshore, in the oil industry and every other industry. The cause will come out soon, and we'll see that it was human error, not sabotage.

is the name of the prospect that was drilled by the Deepwater Horizon, the one that blew out. Exploration wells always have a name... Thunder Horse, Mad Dog, Enchilada, Blind Faith, are examples of other prospect names. They often have themes within a small area, like rock group names, mexican foods, etc.
The simplest explanation is almost always the correct one. Fires happen on rigs. I was on a rig this past year which had a fire in the laundry room, a dryer motor burnt up. We had to stand on the deck ready to evacuate for about 3 long boring hours.
