total rockstar. marilyn manson of pop for sure. hate her music but at least she's a larger than life character. it entertaining. Not just some normal chick or guy on stage. she demands attention and i think thats awesome

Her music is certainly representative of these times. If there ever was a 'soma' in music form, it's hers; candy synth, catchy rythm, catchy melody borrowed from all Pop of the ages. If anything, her music is the artistic culmination of generations of pop artists. In other words, her music is like crack. It's hard to not get into a Lady Gaga song. However, what turns me off about her, is her placid lyrics; so typical and abundant in today's pop music; no depth. Sex, party, rebellion etc. which are cool subjects to write about, if one is truly creative enough to put it into an interesting context, but Gaga's use of it is only to exploit such subjects. Nothing new or groundbreaking in that department, but that's where I believe she represents the masses; eat, sex, drink, drug, sleep, arise, repeat - a sort of droning or robotic view towards life and living. She's the perfect representative pop star for the 'Brave New World'.

But what I really could care less for is her waaaaaay over the top of wearing costumes. Seriously, I get the 'I'm unique' and 'I'm different' message, but someone's trying a wee bit too hard to get some attention.

Never heard a lady gaga song and don't plan to. Never even heard of her until this thread.

Forgive me, but I don't pay attention to the "mass media" nonsense that comes out of Madison Avenue.

I also don't agree that "pop culture" represents, or is consumed by, the great majority of Americans. It would occur to me that more Americans know who George Strait is than George Michael.

I would warn everybody that one of "pop culture's" greatest tricks was convincing us that they're somehow in touch with mainstream America. Nothing could be further from the truth. "Pop culture" represents nothing more than an extremely warped and liberal culture that only about a quarter of the country, those on the oceanic coasts, subscribe to, a culture that is completely out of touch with the rest of us.

Think of it this way: when they tell you some fancy new teevee program had 30 million viewers, it means it did not have 270 million viewers, assuming you're taking only the states into account. When American Idol has 30 million viewers, it means 90% of the United States isn't watching that crap at all!

So much for mainstream!

Pop culture is fringe loony garbage, and New York City is not the cultural center of America and I'm not even sure what country Los Angeles is in anymore!

If there's gonna be any salvation to this mess of a nation, it sure as hell won't come from the salt-water pickle-brained coasts. It'll more likely come from the heartland, places like Branson, Missouri, Atlanta, Georgia, or Albuquerque, New Mexico.
