to be fair

From Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic:

"I asked him if he believed the Cuban model was still something worth exporting.

"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," he said.

This struck me as the mother of all Emily Litella moments. Did the leader of the Revolution just say, in essence, "Never mind"?

I asked Julia to interpret this stunning statement for me. She said, "He wasn't rejecting the ideas of the Revolution. I took it to be an acknowledgment that under 'the Cuban model' the state has much too big a role in the economic life of the country."

Julia pointed out that one effect of such a sentiment might be to create space for his brother, Raul, who is now president, to enact the necessary reforms in the face of what will surely be push-back from orthodox communists within the Party and the bureaucracy. Raul Castro is already loosening the state's hold on the economy. He recently announced, in fact, that small businesses can now operate and that foreign investors could now buy Cuban real estate. (The joke of this new announcement, of course, is that Americans are not allowed to invest in Cuba, not because of Cuban policy, but because of American policy. In other words, Cuba is beginning to adopt the sort of economic ideas that America has long-demanded it adopt, but Americans are not allowed to participate in this free-market experiment because of our government's hypocritical and stupidly self-defeating embargo policy."

It worked to keep him in

It worked to keep him in power for fifty years. For the same reason, it is being imposed on the American people.

It's not about whether or not it is a viable economic system. Only fools believe that it is. But it is used, just like National Socialism (Nazism) to control people. It's all about control.

That's what National Health Care is all about. That's what "gun control" is all about. That's what "protecting us from terrorism" is all about. That's what "protecting the environment" is all about. That's what "Global Warming" is all about. That's what the lead paint hysteria is all about. That's what seizing control of the Internet is all about.

It's all about CONTROL. When government power grows, when politicians gain more control over us, we lose our FREEDOM.

Communism, Socialism, Nazism and Fascism are all contrary to the idea of personal freedom. As government power grows, freedom diminishes.

It's no secret that Communism is an economic failure. All we have to do is to look around.

But what about China, you ask? Well, China is not really a Communist state. It is closer to a Fascist regime. In China, there are state owned businesses and their are privately owned businesses. But they are all controlled by the state.

Once politicians gain control, they don't willingly give it up. In China, they have dropped the Communist mask, but not the control.
