I am so tickled about her joining YAL!! I just used Erica's video and transcript of her Valedictorian speech to dress down my son's English teacher today! Synchronicity?
Erica Goldson's valedictorian speech attacking public education received more than 420,000 views in one month. Now she is a new member of the Young Americans for Liberty chapter at the University of Buffalo.

This speech was amazing in that nobody was expecting this from the valedictorian. I felt the same but she really grasped it very well at a younger age then I did. Best of luck to her in college, learn what you want to learn.
Beautiful, brilliant, articulate and demanding freedom
What an extraordinary young woman.
Thank You!
Erica Goldson for the inspiration. Late last night I finally decided to join YAL as well, which I have been putting off for too long. Joined and I am now going to work on getting the chapter going at my college!
Great Dan, and worth the repetition :)

Brave speech. I disagree on one point.
I disagree with the money part. I like making money. I wish I could make more money (without more work), and I wish I had more money. Maybe money can't buy happiness, but I sat in a lamborgini recently and it was pretty hard not to smile while driving fast in that car. I have a pretty good feeling this girl won't mind having money when she gets older.
I wish our money had more
I wish our money had more purchasing power.

Here's my letter, hope y'all like it:
Dear Ms. Rossi:
I printed out your e-mail and drew a huge question mark on it and placed it on the kitchen table. Kris knows I am peeved about your report. I have instructed him to get on the ball as he absolutely has the potential to do well in your class.
"Kris did not read one of the two required books for summer reading"....yes M'am we discussed this over and over during the summer as I had the print out concerning the books to be read but was balked at by Kris. Basically I concur with his attitude about the usurpation of his rights and free time during the summer so I did not stand on my head in enforcement. Who are you people to "require" my child to associate during the summer when he obviously is not connected in any way to the school during the summer? I'm sure most everyone in academia would be horrified at my statement but it speaks to a larger issue of "who owns our lives?" The school's "requirements" would not stand up in a court of common law. And before you go reminding me about "policy", I will remind you that I'm aware that "policy" is not "law".
Indeed Kris did read over the summer, he bought a 5 part trilogy of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", not on the agenda's "approved" reading list. If you truly want to save Kris from ELA demise, I would think a report on the book he was interested in would suffice.
I know I may seem harsh, but these are harsh times. The educational system is beyond repair yet we are continually forced to oblige it. I propose we stop with the "rules". All the schools seem to do today is prepare little cogs to be "productive", mindless robots. By squeezing everyone into the same mold of rules we quash their true potentials.
I appreciate your concern, I know it is not your fault because you are also trapped in the broken system, with very little to work with and a pile of "no-nos" to deal with. I have explained to Kris (while he was incessantly complaining about "For Whom the Bell Tolls") that sometimes you have to do things you don't like to do (reading boring books and reporting on them) if only to teach discipline and the ability to rise above your boredom.
I will continue to harass Kris about his literature reading but I'm sure you understand I would be carted off to the jailhouse if I "made" him read. It is truly your job (and mine) to heighten the children's interest in literature - may I suggest for your class an intense reading and dissection of The Bill of Rights? How about Bastiat's "The Law"? Not "allowed"? Well then how about "Tale of Two Cities" or "1984"? Kris has already read many classics on his own but due to his interest only. Perhaps you can ask him to write a paper on "Catcher in the Rye" or "Animal Farm" to name a few of his readings.
I apologize for my "literature rant". I know that you are a teacher because you want to impart wisdom and the love of learning to our children. I say "the rules" stand in your way. Please read the following speech by a recent valedictorian (I've also included her video of the speech) to see what is on the horizon in terms of the rising opinion you'll be receiving from students and parents. We've had enough of the poppycock! Saying "It's my job" is no longer going to fly with the American public, we expect you to take a stand for our children.
Thank you for all that you do. If I can be of assistance to you, please let me know.

SC, that is a fine letter. I hope
Kris is proud of you taking this stand for him, and I hope the Ms. Rossi is intelligent and honest enough to appreciate your suggestions.
