Rob McEwen: Your readers need to appreciate: Gold is money. It is currency. I think the number of people familiar with gold will grow as people see gold as a currency. China, India, Russia are buying gold to diversify their foreign reserves. To restore the confidence in currencies, I think some central banks, such as the Chinese and possibly the Russian, will increase their gold holdings to the level that the percentage of their total currency will be greater than that of any other currency in the world. At that point, they will assert that their currency should become the reserve currency of the world.

Comex Default could cause DEFCON 1 alert.

open interest is standing

open interest is standing tall. People want physical metal not the bernank garbage green. Expect a huge fight tonight. The bankers have to shake the longs out of their positions to settle for cash. If only 8,000 contracts stand for delivery plus what was left from last month it is game over. So expect a huge EE raid tonight. I would not be surprised to see silver down 1 or 2 dollars.. but it doesn't mean anything if we have thousands of contracts standing for delivery. Then JP Morgue is going to be short squeezed to death and will have to go into the physical market and buy. I have no clue how high and how fast the price of silver will go up. Backwardation is increasing. Lease rates are jumping higher. There is no physical silver.. atleast not what the Comex needs to settle these contracts.

This is getting interesting.

According to Turd Ferguson's

According to Turd Ferguson's blog, http://tfmetalsreport.blogspot.com/

Open interest for March silver stood at 50,848 contracts last friday. At 5,000 oz per contract, that is 254.24 million ounces. Projections for 2011 world production from silver mines range between 670-700 million ounces.

The real question though is how much silver inventory is sitting in the COMEX warehouses?

EE stands for Evil Empire

Harvey's report is out. 160k+ volume today in silver? have we seen it this high yet? thats insane! by my calculations thats 800,000,000 (800M!) ounces of silver trading!

SLV inventory PLUMMETS by 5.5 million ounces today!

GLD lost a few TONNES in their inventory

i havent missed a report of his in a couple months now and i dont remember seeing daily numbers even close to this.

its on a fast boat to China.

As vlbc mentioned below, first of all

best to all of the injured and condolences to the families of the dead in New Zealand, not to mention the threatened and killed in Libya... boy, it is just a storm of bad news today.

Yes, I saw my portfolio hammered pretty hard today, but take a look at Andy Zaky's web site, "Bullish Cross" for a little background which only adds to the oil uncertainty in the Middle East.

please tell me

you own at least a little physical $ilver.

No, but I do own a mining

No, but I do own a mining stock, which has performed admirably. If the dollar were to suddenly evaporate, I'd still own the stocks. Today was a bad day if you planned on selling, but I literally have no plans now or at any time on the horizon to sell anything. I am not a day trader.

you're so screwed

i hope you have some storable food, guns and ammo.

A little perspective .....

from where I sit.

My youngest daughter lives and works
in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Today ...
do I care if silver goes up $5.00 ?

Do I care if silver drops $10.00 today?

again ...

Today, for me, there are far more important things.

Any one who can spare the time, please channel some positive energy to the people suffering in New Zealand.

i know you usually care less about metals movement anyway

but today i do give you my sympathies and best wishes. Have you heard any word from her? is she ok?

Thank you, IR8.

Last September, when they had the last big quake, it was 3 days before comunications were restored, and we heard that she was OK.
This time, there have been numerous fatalities.

I don't know how it's

I don't know how it's possible, but somehow I never even heard about the first quake in September... which is baffling to me.

Mixed signals.

Silver leading the way has been bullish, but the fact gold hasn't been able to break above recent highs and confirm the move makes me a little tepid right now.
Emerging markets have been showing weakness, and with today's selloff in US markets, I have to wonder if commodities in general are not due for a serious correction. That will surely impact metals, despite any manipulation shenanigans? I'm thinking we are seeing a wider trading range being defined, and may yet have lows to make. If that's the case, recent momentum on the upside is simply a prelude to what lies ahead.

Silver and gold seems really strong

In spite of the constant attacks, they are holding up super strong.

The mining shares underperformed, as to what I would have expected after resent metal run.

But the future is bright. :)

Can anybody explain how to

Can anybody explain how to purchase silver futures (long-term) and take delivery? Does one have to rollover the futures contract each month or can one purchase a single jan 2012 contract for delivery? (The etfs are convenient but you lose on maintenance and rollover fees.) Does anybody have experience purchasing options on futures?

Oh. You said Jan 2012

The etf SLV does not have rollover expense, because it buys physical metal, not derivatives. Besides, right now the rollover "expense" would be negative. That is what "backwardation" means.

What exactly do you want to do? Do you want to lock in a price for silver, but your funds to buy it will not all be available until Jan. 2012?
