Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm (Video Library)
“I’m all about trying to reinvigorate this notion of the Jeffersonian, intellectual agrarian.”
~ Joel Salatin
This post is a video compilation of Joel Salatin’s holistic methods of farming at his Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. It contains over seventeen hours of video covering interviews, farm tours, as well as talks and presentations he has given to a wide variety of audiences. I have tried to categorize them under general headings where no specific title is available. It begins with the “Introductory Video” section which gives a series of overviews of his farm operation and philosophy. For those who want to skip the introduction and go directly to the details, the “2010 Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense FundRAISER” section is the most comprehensive. The section after this is unnamed but covers the same main topics during a different farm tour. Most of the various indoor talks he has given have been grouped in the section, “Presentations given by Joel Salatin”, located near the end of the post. I have tried to prioritize them based on video quality and content. There are many other valuable videos which have been grouped under various headings but the two I have named are the most informative. If there is any specific information that you would like to find in this series of videos, just leave a comment and I’ll try to point you to the right video(s) covering your topic of interest.
Happy watching~

Overview
“Joel F. Salatin (born 1957) is an American farmer, lecturer, and author whose books include You Can Farm and Salad Bar Beef.
Salatin raises livestock using holistic methods of animal husbandry, free of potentially harmful chemicals, on his Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Meat from the farm is sold by direct-marketing to consumers and restaurants ...
Salatin, a self-described "Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-capitalist farmer" produces high-quality "beyond organic" meats, which are raised using environmentally responsible, ecologically beneficial, sustainable agriculture ...
Salatin's 550-acre farm is featured prominently in Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma (2006) and the documentary films, Food, Inc, and Fresh. His unconventional farming practices have drawn attention from the alternative agriculture community especially those interested in sustainable livestock management ...
Salatin’s philosophy of farming emphasizes healthy grass on which animals can thrive in a symbiotic cycle of chemical-free feeding. Cows are moved from one pasture to another rather than being centrally corn fed. Then chickens in portable coops are moved in behind them, where they dig through the cow dung to eat protein-rich fly larvae while further fertilizing the field with their droppings.”

USA Today report on Polyface farm
Polyface Farms clip from Food Inc.
Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms discusses grass-fed cattle - “Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farms, believes in raising animals in a way that mimics the processes of nature: Cows graze one area of grass, and a few days later, chickens graze the same area and eat the fly larvae out of the manure. The manure from both fertilizes the grass. Joel Salatin discusses a little of this process, here.”
He ends by saying, “I’m all about trying to reinvigorate this notion of the Jeffersonian intellectual agrarian.”
The Polyface Farm DVD Trailer - “A comprehensive look at Polyface Farm through the course of one full year of farming, this DVD features one of the world's finest working examples of an environmentally friendly family farm. Hard hitting and practical, Salatin's explanations will revolutionize your thinking about food and farming in a proactive, can-do style. Both "how" and "why" unite in this information-rich DVD that will impact your life as powerfully as any performance.”

Here are the latest videos of interviews, farm tours, and presentations which I have added to the OP. Again, some of the presentations are the same but the one titled "Sustainable Food Productions", by Sustainable Food Production program at Minnesota State Fergus Falls, clearly shows his slides and has some additional info. The talk titled "Joel Salatin on Food Safety" is very good as well. He also talks a little about permaculture concepts, swales, and ponds. He manages water on his farm by building ponds(12 currently) in the hills and distributing the water through five miles of gravity fed lines.

awesome resources. you the man!
Thanks for the
story you gave in your post about your experience with Joel Salatin. I had a good laugh when I read your wife's comment to Salatin about "the plan." Maybe more libertarians will start showing up at his events.
I don't care how often this gets bumped..
this guy is my hero and I plan on doing a 40 acre version of this as I put my farm together.
We have had little rain and because of that our grass has petered out somewhat. IF we had rotated our cattle like he does, we wouldn't be having near the problems. Now I'm looking for hay and not finding it. Very heartbreaking and expensive to feed animals that should be eating grass.
Anyone have a good line on some hay? We are looking for just 10 round bales or about 100 square bales within driving distance.

I just started rewatching the videos again. It's amazing what you pick up the second time around. A picture's worth a thousand words.
Btw, Salatin also endorsed Ron Paul when he ran for president in 2008. It's nice to have such a honorable and committed man from the sustainable food movement in our ranks.
Here is his facebook page for those who are into the whole facebook thing. He has 2609 members. maybe we can swell his ranks a bit.

And impresses me.

LOL!
*I* have worked so hard on organic gardening. I compost; I chop everything up. I keep a rain barrel, so that I can water with rain water.
I haul manure for the garden; I use no chemicals.
I weed and mulch and baby all my plants--
and my output is very low. I am quite discouraged this year. I have been gardening for decades. I know that my garden area is not ideal; my soil is not bad, but there are trees nearby about which I can do nothing (neighboring trees)--
My fruit trees, with the exception of one apple tree and a cherry tree last year, have not produced well either.
I do EVERYthing; I work so hard that I am nearly sick of it--
but I am glad it works for someone.
Local market gardeners get my poor, hoarded pennies for produce.
:(
Everyone has a bad garden season, right? How about 10 of them?
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
It's all about the soil!
1988,
Have you ever had a soil test? Your soils PH might be off. When you think of successful gardeners, it's not about the plants, but about the health of their soil. Do you only grow crops that are suited to your climate?
I learned a lot from John Jevons book "How to Grow More Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Berries, Grains, and Other Crops Than You Ever Thought Possible On Less Land Than You Can Imagine" He also has a web-site, http://www.johnjeavons.info/john-jeavons.html.
Don't give up, good luck,
Debbie

Yeah Joel is an inspiration. I also volunteered in Nicaragua last winter and met a guy named Rick Ervin he is working in Nicaragua at a Ranch/Learning Center. The purpose is to teach the rural poor how to raise crops and produce animal protein to meet their families' needs. Small groups of families are brought from cooperating villages to the teaching/research farm, given hands-on training in the production of small domestic animals (chickens, rabbits, goats), taught the basics of soil restoration and reforestation, and the production of feed and food crops on small plots of land. Rancho Ebenezer emphasizes intensive farming practices, enabling the student farmers to produce maximum yields of food and feed from small plots of land.

phenomenal resource. Thank you so much.
Those who don't see how this interconnects, quite aside from Salatin being an outspoken freedom fighter, need to think more. Tune out, turn off, drop in.

Great Info
Thanks for this great post. I have been a Joel Salatin fan for years. I attended a weekend workshop that he gave in Santa Barbara, CA. He is a very engaging speaker. If more farmers could learn to farm like Joel, we would all benefit.

There is a presentation
in the OP titled, "Pathways To Relocalization", which was given in Santa Barbara. Maybe it's the same one you went to.
Part 1
He provides a great template to follow. I like how he draws examples from nature by observing how herd animals interact with the landscape by "moving, mobbing, and mowing." The landscape has a short disturbance, followed by a long period of rest. This allows the land to come back with a richer, more diverse biota.

this thread couldn't be more timely!
great job!!!
Glad you like it :-)
I figure when things really start going down hill, people will be looking for solutions.
All of the video library posts are cross-referenced so that if someone finds one piece of the puzzle they will be able to find the rest. I'll probably take a break for the time being while I think about possible subjects for the next library post.
Lately, there have been a few good posts by other members on self-sufficiency. Each of us are taking a piece of the puzzle and approaching the subject from a different angle. Michael recently posted an interesting video of Yochai Benkler talking about the collaborative effort that takes place on the internet. It's worth watching.
How about an early Saturday morning bump
for anyone who missed out on this great information!
This is good stuff people.
Oh, my chickens will be happy birds!
The aquaponics just got a sprouting bed added to the plan. Not as slick as the ferris wheel, but I can haul the sprouts easier than the water.

LOVE!
stilllwater, you are such a great researcher,
compiler, resource -- do you have your own site? Thanks for your generosity here on the DP.
Thankyou for your kind words...
Nope, I don't have my own site. I've thought about it, but everyone who needs the info is at the DP, so I'll just post here for the time being. I have backups of all my library posts so I can set up a site fairly quickly if I decide to in the future. I like creating and posting along with all of the other liberty minded posts. It helps the camaraderie.
Freely receive, freely give...
