Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm (Video Library)Submitted by stillwater on Fri, 10/01/2010 - 17:30
“I’m all about trying to reinvigorate this notion of the Jeffersonian, intellectual agrarian.”
~ Joel Salatin
This post is a video compilation of Joel Salatin’s holistic methods of farming at his Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. It contains over forty five hours of video covering interviews, farm tours, as well as talks and presentations he has given to a wide variety of audiences. I have tried to categorize them under general headings where no specific title is available. It begins with the Introductory Videos section which gives a series of overviews of his farm operation and philosophy. For those who want to skip the introduction and go directly to the details, the 2010 Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense FundRAISER section is the most comprehensive. Most of the various indoor talks he has given have been grouped in the section, Presentations given by Joel Salatin. I have tried to prioritize them based on video quality and content. If there is any specific information that you would like to find in this series of videos, just leave a comment and I’ll try to point you to the right video(s) covering your topic of interest.

“Joel F. Salatin (born 1957) is an American farmer, lecturer, and author whose books include You Can Farm and Salad Bar Beef.
Salatin raises livestock using holistic methods of animal husbandry, free of potentially harmful chemicals, on his Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Meat from the farm is sold by direct-marketing to consumers and restaurants ...
Salatin, a self-described "Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-capitalist farmer" produces high-quality "beyond organic" meats, which are raised using environmentally responsible, ecologically beneficial, sustainable agriculture ...
Salatin's 550-acre farm is featured prominently in Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma (2006) and the documentary films, Food, Inc, and Fresh. His unconventional farming practices have drawn attention from the alternative agriculture community especially those interested in sustainable livestock management ...
Salatin’s philosophy of farming emphasizes healthy grass on which animals can thrive in a symbiotic cycle of chemical-free feeding. Cows are moved from one pasture to another rather than being centrally corn fed. Then chickens in portable coops are moved in behind them, where they dig through the cow dung to eat protein-rich fly larvae while further fertilizing the field with their droppings.”

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms discusses grass-fed cattle - “Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farms, believes in raising animals in a way that mimics the processes of nature: Cows graze one area of grass, and a few days later, chickens graze the same area and eat the fly larvae out of the manure. The manure from both fertilizes the grass. Joel Salatin discusses a little of this process, here.”
He ends by saying, “I’m all about trying to reinvigorate this notion of the Jeffersonian intellectual agrarian.”

Increasing Production Per Acre - "If food prices kept up with land prices, you'd be paying $20 for a hamburger today ... We've got to stack these complementary enterprises so that we do ratchet up this income per acre.”
