Wikileaks: Secret Iraq War Death Toll Set at 285,000

In what is being described as the largest release of secret U.S. military documents ever, whistle-blowing web site WikiLeaks has released a trove of classified reports about the war in Iraq, including a secret U.S. government tally that put the Iraqi death toll at 285,000, according to news sources that received advanced copies of the documents.

The documents include evidence of state sanctioned torture by the Iraqi government, new evidence of Iraqi government death squads, and Iran’s involvement in funneling arms to Shiite militias, according to Arab news channel Al Jazeera, which has been able to review the documents before their release.

Al Jazeera has reviewed the 400,000 documents that are being released. WikiLeaks says it will hold a press conference Saturday morning in Europe. WikiLeaks‘ Web site is currently down, for what it calls “scheduled maintenance,” and ABC News has not viewed the documents firsthand.

about 90% to 95% of uh-mericans could care less about some nameless, faceless soul in Iraq or Afghanistan...after all, the World Series is ready to begin, NASCAR is coming down to the wire, The NFL is heating up, Halloween is coming and there are costumes to buy, the cat needs nutered, the car is making a funny noise, the neighbor's tree is overhanging their roof, the leaves have fallen and need to be raked up...and so much more. Besides, why should uh-mericans get all worked up over the murder of hundreds of thousands of innoncents...Hey, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they dress funny. Not to mention that you don't want to be labeled as one of those "America Haters". Ahhh...governments kill people all the time...It's okay if governments do it. Sadly.

it still amazes me that

it still amazes me that people support this war (still)

We've been there for almost what, 8 yrs now, and all on lies. no wmd's, and no link to 9/11

Kind of sick how

the avg. American can skip over the fact that the US killed so many people, based on a cover-lie & imperalistic gains.

What a Country

1 million

I still estimate a million civilians dead. Wikileaks has released 450,000 pages documents and what have we discovered? nothing.

How, specifically, did you

How, specifically, did you come to your estimate? Are you including civilian deaths caused by private contractors (like Blackwater) that would not have been included in the government's account? Are you also considering, in your estimate, that -of course- the leaked government account will not have documented every single civilian death?

Wikileaks does not exist to "estimate". All it does is release official documents to the public. It is up to you, as a thinking human being, to decide what those documents mean. I agree that the death toll is much higher than what these specific documents indicate... but I also understand that these documents are only a small part of a larger picture. I'm sure many at Wikileaks understand that as well... but hey, they don't exist to present their opinions.

The Larger Number

If you count the deaths resulting from denial of basic necessities during the years leading up the Iraq invasion, including the high death rate among children, you arive at some pretty big numbers. I think the million or more numbers include a longer time frame than just the 2003 war.

how about this:

Love won! Deliverance from Tyranny is on the way! Col. 2:13-15

I see the Israeli strategic bloggers

Have been very active on this thread, trying to trash wikileaks. I hope the real patriots don't get fooled by them.

I hope the gory details of

I hope the gory details of the thousands of small children killed and maimed -- labeled "insurgents" and/or "militants" -- will be shown on American MSM television over and over until the American people rise up and demand accountability and let the chips fall where they may. The MSM and politicians can ignore this at their own peril. I predict it will fester until sooner or later the public will demand answers and justice.

This is what it took

To end Vietnam.

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

It's not possible for people

It's not possible for people to understand the lives of others by interpretation. Ours is a "cool" culture, if I may borrow from Marshal McCluhan (sp?), and we are far removed from the daily dangers and discomforts of others. Real change only comes from those things that trigger the "fight or flight" response.

but true. Many people I know look at it as a big "So what" - I mean they are "others", who cares about them ? Many take pleasure in their deaths.

I disagree. Not -everything-

Exposing The New World Order

Iraq & Afghanistan are the killing fields for the American Soldier.
To date we have 500,000 U.S. Military causualities. This of course includes injuries both emotional & physical brain injuries as well. Our troops are now suffering from a pandemic in suicides of which contemporaneously MSM pushes gay suicides and omits the military.
Foreign troops are now training on our soil including the Russians..
Bringing our military troops to grave numbers is by NWO design which includes both of the Bushes.Training of foreign troops is for Marshall Law enforcement, as our troops would be low in number & would sympathize with the American citizenry.

Wikileak is doing America a favor by waking up the 7 minute attention span of the dumbed down.

good idea

J Assange walks out of CNN "interview"

pretty disgusting...at the level of an ET interview with Lindsay Lohan...

kind of coincidental....I like how Gordon feels about it, agree with most of this. http://www.veteranstoday.com/2010/10/23/gordon-duff-ho-hum-m...

why is it when wiki-leaks does good they are the best thing since sliced bread. But when they release certain documents, they are now a bunch of liars.

Explain it to me.

Same goes for voting. If we win, its great. But the instant we lose we are complaining about voter fraud.

We don't win every time people.

Who knows, maybe wiki leaks is infiltrated. Maybe we need a new wiki-leaks type organization.

Wikileaks is controlled

Wikileaks is controlled distraction as someone here pointed out.

Wikileaks do not go far enough and not telling anything new. It is softening the blow. When MSM gives so much coverage it is a clue. Wikileaks thinks 911 truth is a conspiracy and supports official story. 911 is the reason why we are attacking Iraq and Afghanistan killing countless number of people and getting killed proportionally.

Here is a like:
and there are more.

If Wikileaks is what it says

If Wikileaks is what it says it is... "going far enough" is not its job. Wikileaks takes official documents that are given to it and posts them for public consumption. It does not author the documents.

Very good points. We should all be Wikileaks

instead of complaining if others don't do quite the bang-up job some seem to think they should be doing. I say get out and put your necks on the line before you are so judgmental about these activists.

I still think Wikileaks is amazing and deserving of enormous appreciation. Too many are addicted to thinking every organization is corrupt, every individual a CIA plant.

I am convinced there still are heroes in the world; and I think the originators of Wikileaks are among them.

no thank you

I prefer not to aid and abed the official story.
What did he do that commands the kind of respect you speak of?

reedr3v's picture

All of you who are so quick to disparage

Wikileaks, have you taken the time to go through this massive cache of documents and never-before available materials and proofs for those who need them that wars of aggression are beyond the line for a civilized nation?

And how much are you personally risking to end the wars? Most of us, not nearly as much as the people who are Wikileaks. THAT is why they have earned my respect.

Anyone else think the CIA can

Anyone else think the CIA can doctor up a ton of documents and send them to Wikileaks saying, "I'm a whistle blower" ?

I don't trust Wilileaks.

The media is all over it, every single time. These are
supposed to be groundbreaking revelations when in fact they seem to benefit the official narrative, which is:

- the death toll is not as high as many have been estimating (namely well over one million)

- the bad stuff that happens is really the fault of these uncivilized Iraqis rather than the US forces and private mercenaries

- Iran is the real bad guy in all of this
