I got to meet Willie Nelson tonight !!!
Submitted by Jefferson2 on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 00:12So I am out celebrating my birthday with friends and family at a small Mexican restaurant, out in the Texas hill country. The place wasn't busy at all, except for some laughter that was coming out of the private party room. The waitress told us that Willie was celebrating with some friends in the other room.
I have never really been interested in celebrities but I have always wanted to meet him, especially after he said the things he did about 9/11.
The whole time I sat there and debated whether I should go and interrupt him, and introduce myself. People kept encouraging me to do it, so I waited until I saw the waiter bringing out dishes, and assumed he was finished eating.
I finally mustered up the courage and went for it. I came into the party room, and there he sat toward the end of a long table with no one around him.
He instantly greeted me, and extended his hand like we were old friends. I was pretty nervous, I have to admit.
I apologized for interrupting his party, and he said it was not a problem. I shook his hand and told him that I wanted to thank him for his stance on 9/11 truth. I told him that we lost a family friend on that day, and how important it was to ask questions on their behalf.
I told him that it was my birthday, and I was feeling entitled, so I worked up the courage to come and meet him.
He asked how old I was, and I told him. He exclaimed "You're just a BABY", he said "Of course everyone's a baby to me". We both laughed and shook hands again.
I told him that I had seen him with AJ and JV, and on Larry King and how awesome it was that he did not care about what the consequences would be, and boldly asked the questions that needed to be asked.
I jokingly said that "the music wasn't bad either", to which he laughed again.
We had a brief discussion about how they have used 9/11 as a springboard to rob us of our liberties at every turn. It was incredible.
Without getting into a lot of detail, I then offered him some of my personal dessert, if you know what I mean. His hand extended, almost before I could reach for my pocket. His eyes lit up like it was Christmas.
I let him know where he could get a hold of me, and he said "maybe we'll burn one sometime", to which I responded "I would love nothing more". I told him that I didn't want to take up anymore of his time, thanked him again, and left him smiling.
There is not a phony bone in that guy's body. He is an absolute gentleman, and very gracious. I hope that he enjoys my dessert, and gives me a call. That would be a dream come true.
One of the best B-day presents, I could have ever asked for. I just had to share this experience....
or some of it anyway. I am still floating !!

Cool story. I too met Willie in a Circle K in Gilbert AZ, he was singing to some lady, Momma Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up TO Be Cowboys, while buying some goodies. He is a real person. He spent about 30 minutes talking and singing and taking pics with anyone who asked. I shook his hand and his hand felt like he had dug post holes without gloves for over a year. Great guy! Thanks for telling him you appreciate his speaking out about 911

I'm really glad you posted it. What a thrill that must have been to just sit there chatting with him. I have always loved Willie. He always came across as the most sincere, laid back kinda guy. And so darn cute.

Jefferson, I want to thank you for sharing that story, and the courage you worked up to go back in the party room. I hope if I have a similar chance one day that your story will inspire me to do the same. Oddly enough, a friend mentioned Willy today, how he saw a video of him running through those tires like football players do, after having some dessert. ;-) I guess he did pretty well. I admire the man for speaking his beliefs regardless of the consequences, and trying to make change with things like biodiesel. Your mention of his gratitude warmed my heart, as even many average folk are ingrates these days, let alone celebrities.

I gotta tell ya, your story is great and I believe every word.
I had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with him myself once back in 92. He was doing a gig in SD. during the Sturgis events and I was fortunate in knowing someone with some control of the gig. Truly down to earth man. (Jennings, not so much)
But it sure was a blast and something I will never forget.
